I took a tour of national parks in the US. You could tell who was Chinese by there behavior. They were usually in a huge group and were pushy and didnt abide by rules. For example, people would line up to go to bathroom. But some of the Chinese would just cut everyone.

totally agree. I kinda embarrassed of mainland chinese, especially their habit of wasting foods (in a buffet restaurant, they like to take foods more than they could handle and in the end they don't eat it) this is really contradict with where I was grew. I had a Chinese chemistry partner, typical well organised robot person. Anyway she was quite rude, until our first tests came back, I scored highest in the class.....then she was smiling at me and trying to be friendly. I thought it was gross that she could change her demeanour because i was smarter than her.

@@susanohara4274 yeah I guess so, I might not of been clear in my comment and what I was thinking about. I don't put too much value in test scores as I believe that everyone has a gift, rather it's making a person comfortable and letting them express themselves in a positive way to find solutions with the knowledge they possess. Asian culture puts the children under pressure to achieve, and really stifled that creative spark, and it showed how they treated a (friendly) stranger. The strict culture has positive effects too....so,
I should not be stereo typing, as it can appear in anyone.

I have lived in Thailand for more than 12 years. When Chinese come to Thailand and bring their Chinese Culture here, Thai people do their best to ignore their rude and crude ways. Spitting and blowing snot rockets on the floors and sidewalks, obnoxiously loud conversations on their cell phones, and their aggressive/grabbing and fondling style with the young Thai ladies, as if all Thai ladies work on the streets. Most hotels here have "Chinese floors only" void of carpeting that is difficult to clean the snot rockets, spit and spilled food. We are all aware of the Chinese culture as the Chinese make it ever so obvious but they also refuse to acknowledge any other culture but their own, as if it was the only civilized culture in the world. As a half European/half Asian man, I acknowledge the differences and uniqueness of every culture and attempt to retain the best of each and overlook the worse of each. Chinese have their flaws as well as their qualities. Unfortunately, when Chinese visit Thailand, we see the majority to be arrogance and culturally ignorant of any other culture aside their own.

Most people will ask for some newspaper for example if their shoes are dirty and they don’t have an enclosed porch to leave them in x
It’s amazing that they don’t do that, but happy to let children do their business in the streets, have disgusting public toilets, including there not being toilet roll and using hands & water 🤮 Where’s the hot water and liquid soap? Nasty, where are the food stalls washing their hands & using the toilet…I feel sick writing that 😂

73Corbin well from my understanding (my mom is taiwan-born chinese), it is ingrained into chinese kids that drugs are bad because of the opium crisis in china back in those days. they tell kids that it was because of drugs (opium) that their country had such a hard time. which is true.
so i would honestly say that the opium thing in 1800's china is not hypocritical at all, as the anti-drug mentality is a response to opium and the problems it brought on china.

As someone who has worked for a Chinese Auto supplier (Tier 1) in the US, I thought I was informed about the culture in China...thanks to your videos and C-Milk, I have learned more in the past 2 weeks than i have in the past 10 years. I am coming to China this summer (Changsha, HuNan) and I really appreciate all your hard work and the quality content that you provide in your vids. I never thought I would learn so much from youtubers and my GF who lives in Changsha really appreciates that I am now more aware of the obstacles ahead of us and i am more understanding now of our differences. You have given me the basics to "Stay Awesome" when i come to China for the first time. Thank you for doing this and in a most humble way as well! More power!

Good luck dude, I went through the same process with my wife back when we first started dating (way back in 2002). It's nerve wracking, but always remember, get the mother to like you first. If the mother likes you, she can convince the father. Bring gifts, the more expensive the better. Chocolates for the mother, alcohol for the dad. Check with your girlfriend first though, she'll know what her parents like.

+marioozzie I agree, it's amazing. My company sent me there on a two year contract, and though sometimes it was exhausting, overall it was a good experience. Plus, I loved the high speed trains because I could bring my wife to visit her family over the weekend in only two hours without fussing about with cramped airliners. (The ability to stretch one's legs in a high speed train is worth every penny; I wish we had them here in the US honestly.)

I know it doesn’t have anything to do with this video but I wanted to give you kudos on your conquering southern and northern China documentaries. Very impressed and hope you do others in other parts of Asia.

Finally, as you stated it works both ways. I have traveled to Europe and made many friends as I try to learn their language , the basics , and research their culture before even leaving the plane. Average looking guy but Ladies of those countries are surprised of my knowledge of language and sincerity in learning/respecting their culture. Works wonders in the Scandinavian and Eastern counties( Hungary , Czech republic etc)

As a Chinese person, the only thing that really get to me is the fact that us chinese are often miss portrayed. When I first moved overseas at 5 years old, I was always bullied, harassed, hit, and insulted because kids in my class were taught the wrong things about my culture. I think this applies to many nations because people judge them based on generalized stereotypes and tend to forget that everyone is different within those confines. I love your videos, and best of luck to everyone in 2019 :)

I know this comment is 4 years old now but want to add this is very true, we get taught so many misconceptions and stereotypes about China that aren't necessarily true. I was talking with a Chinese girl for a while and she thought me such much more about China and its actual culture, and the same way around with her knowing false things about western culture, there is also a lot of things that are just the same in both cultures. Especially younger people would agree more to western ideals

If you came to america and were the target of bullying, it's not because of where you came from, it's because of how you behave when you got here. The only people who are the target of bullying are people who need to modify their behavior to match the rest of the people in their peer group. Also, the USA has NOTHING on bullying when it comes to Asian countries like China and Japan! USA students can't even attend a Japanese school because of how harshly they'd be treated. Kids in the USA accept all foreigners, unless their behavior is strange or appalling, like not wearing underarm deodorant. Fit in and you'll have a good time. Act like a fool and you'll be treated as such.

Who goes to other countries to eat food they can already eat in their own country. It's also depending from which chinese province they are from, they may just not like the food. My GF is cantonese and the food there is very light, very few herbs and such and little salt. In comparison to other food which one is used to, my gf reacts to bitter, sour and salty very sensitive because she is not used to it. Therefor the food can be seen too intensive in flavor for her. Has nothing to do with nationalism lol. It's just a different food culture. You share lots of dishes instead of just having one for yourself. They even share 1 pizza for 6 people and have different pasta etc, if they order other countries dishes (at least in china). Just because people voted Italian food the most, doesn't mean all voted for it ... you can still have your own opinions on food lol.

Actually, despite the fact that Germany is quite a modern country, air conditioning is not very widespread. On the other hand, most houses have central heating which I heard is not that widespread in countries where airconditioning is widespread. And if we Germans want fresh air, we just open up our windows. Hanging your wash outside in your garden or balcony is not considered to be a sign that you are poor but that you are concious of the problems of the environment and want to protect it by saving electricity and therefore, it is even very popular amongst young people. So, even developed countries have different standards of living if you look at the facts of airconditioning, or using dryers or central heating.
