    brooo I love your workflow for learning kanji!! I love the idea of making it like a game and unlocking them as you learn them in the context of sentences so they actually mean something to you. gonna definitely adopt this for the future kanji I learn, thank you for sharing!! so good 😭🤎

    • @LionelvsJapanTV
      @LionelvsJapanTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      it is solid indeed. trust me, its much more chill and less stress. No point in learning all 2136 common kanji up front if you dont even know any words along with them. Your just force memorising the kanji but not gaining any practical reading skills. jus the ability to look at a kanji and know its meaning.

    I did old school, fatboy RTK with all 2200 kanji. It has it's benefits, but I'm SO glad I ignored Matt and didn't bother with RTK3. Imo R-RTK is the best way, I think the JP1K is too minimalistic and forces useless vocab into your head. Unless it has voiced, full sentences I think its too little of two separate things that are best addressed individually.

    This is fucking awesome. I've been sitting around for years and been like "why isn't there a program where you can have the content start showing only kanji you know"... well this is like a manual process to do that. A little work but not bad. I like the idea of just learning the radicals. I got through like 600 of RTK and I would maybe miss a day or two, reviews would pile up, hundreds of reviews carrying over day to day, then I can't keep up. Keeping up with around 250 radicals sounds way better..

    I'm probably one of few people that likes learning kanji. Pretty much done with the jōyō kanji and will move onto frequency lists soon, heading for 3000 at the very least. I would highly recommend WK. Slow? Maybe, but you'll need a ton of vocab aswell along with grammar and immersion. Would also recommend kitsun over anki, the interface is much better and it's much easier to customize. But if you want to do it for free, anki and RTK isn't terrible.

  • @CaptainWumbo
    @CaptainWumbo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I try to just learn by grouping by sound, usually the right hand side is for sound only. Only one chinese reading is common, and it unlocks more words than the kun readings which are somehow easier to remember anyway given their frequency.
    But no matter what it takes time. Interference effect is common. You have to balance the pain of a recall based approach with stuff that is actually interesting. I wouldn't use srs for vocabulary, it's unnecessary. I retain plenty just by reading and listening.
    Still I like your advice, really sensible and straightforward.

    i have a question. it has been confusing me for weeks now. how do i know the default reading of each kanji for example 金 is mainly read as かね but 生 has different reading. how would you read that kanji alone. like for example i texted my friend "bro what is the meaning of 生" how would they read it? do they just dont read it or what. or for example if you wanna asked it in japanese in person of whats the meaning of 生 how would you say it to them. do you need to write it on paper for them to know exactly what you're talking about ? how do you deal with this problem since it can be used when someone asked you about a kanji but you dont know which readings to use

    • @LionelvsJapanTV
      @LionelvsJapanTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alright. I’ll try address everything clearly.
      1. 金 is not “mainly read as かね”, かね(金) is just a word that means money and it’s read かね. 金 is also a kanji that also means money. Note - some kanji are both a word and a kanji. And some kanji are just kanji/characters that are used in 2 or more character/kanji words.
      2. 生 has many readings. You can’t really ask a Japanese person how a kanji is read when it’s on its own Because kanji has many readings that change depending on the context. If you’re gunna ask a Japanese person how a kanji is read, you have to ask them , “how is this kanji read in this sentence” or “how is this kanji read in this word”. Unless the kanji, is like 金 above, which can be a word on it’s own, in that case they’d reply ‘it’s read かね’. otherwise they wouldn’t know what to tell you unless you give them more context.
      3. ‘Bro what is the meaning of 生’ - they’d probably not read it, they’d just recognise it.
      4. 「生」っていう漢字はどういう意味ですか - ‘what’s the meaning of 生’ translation.
      5. No you wouldn’t have to write it on paper.
      Hopefully that makes sense

      If your goal is to be able to read. And you don’t care about knowing how to write, then you don’t need to ‘practice writing in a book’.

      @@LionelvsJapanTV The 214 radicals you are talking about are actually a traditional way of classifying Kanji, I believe. Each kanji is assigned a “radical” that is present as a component within the kanji itself, but only one. Something like that. What would be more ideal is learning the basic components of all kanji, but it’s not standardised. You could probably still find some good lists though (like, say, RTK primitives, WaniKani, and whatnot). Ones that would provide a way to build every kanji you see.
