    The KYG livestream usually wraps up just about when I'm waking up on Saturday mornings here in Japan, so listening to the archive with a cup of coffee has been my morning routine every weekend for at least a year. The show has been instrumental in me amassing 8 guitars in my tiny one room apartment during the COVID times. I only made it 15 minutes into today's show and I've been searching for used Gibson Explorers and Firebirds for the past hour now. Thanks for all you do.

    As long as Fed Reserve is engaging in Quantitative Easing, the prices will remain high (as well as real estate etc.). They announced stopping QE in March of 2022. If you want to sell a Gibson, do it before then.

    Re cheap guitars that are not setup in the factory, i learned the hard and expensive way.
    I decided to visit my local guitar shop to buy my first guitar, they took advatage of my lack
    of knowledge and sold me an almost unplayable Squire Affinity, with no offer or advice on
    a setup.
    I tried for many hours until my finger tips were too sore to continue, and then booked some
    lessons, my tutor asked how far i had got on my own, after seeing my fingers he asked to try my guitar, and showed me why i had sore fingers.
    He lent me a Yamaha Pacifica, what a difference, so he went with me to return the Squire,
    tore a strip off them for selling a bad guitar to a new player.
    So sorry Phil, i strongly agree with others, all guitars should leave the factory setup to be
    at least playable.
    Never mind just flooding the market with unplayable cheap junk that is only fit as an wall
    ornament.

      I have had my hands on 3 squire affinity’s, and all 3 weren’t the least bit set up. They were just awful! I own 2 of them. After adjusting it, I decided I liked it so much, I bought a second off a college kid for $100 bucks. It was brand new, and I was shocked he was trying to play it as it was. I bought it to mod & mess around with. They are not great, but still fun to play around with. The 3rd was on display in a store, and it was so out of whack, I would have been ashamed to display it. I don’t understand why a retailer, who is trying to sell it, wouldn’t at least try to make it playable. That being said, I have seen a kid in a music store cranking a truss rod like a model T Ford, so maybe it’s better if they don’t. Always wanted a Yamaha, because the quality control is always there, no matter what it is. A few turns of a screwdriver makes a world of difference.

    • @Barbarapape
      @Barbarapape 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jray5363 The Chinese made Squires are reknown for having no quality control or any attempt to set them up.
      I now know how to setup a guitar, but what upset me was the store taking advantage of a new would be player.
      As for store setups i fear you are right, a good sample of a new guitar should only require a few minor adjustments to make it easy to play.
      I still have the Yamaha, and compared to todays samples. it is far better built.
      It was more than twice the price of the Squire, but well worth it.
      The old saying of buy cheap, buy twice is
      very true with guitars.

    From what I read in 2020 guitars companies had record sales. In fact it's still happening the manufacturers can't keep up with the orders. Most of them were back logged the due to having to shut down due to Covid for a month or more. When they came back to work they had to fulfil a massive amount of previous orders. They've been trying to catch up since then. For the past few months many of them have had their suppliers behind is getting them parts. When guitar makers can't get parts they can't produce guitars. There is a huge bottle neck on cargo ships bringing instruments into the country at our ports that can't get unloaded fast enough. That includes parts too.

    The reality of guitars made in the USA, (I am now making guitars in the US but will not use this free comment section to advertise them because Phil deserves to get paid for that), isn't just that the cost is higher on the labor. It's that the company, (often alreasy beholden to corporate investors and stockholders), has to charge outside of the budget of "most parents buying for their teenager" or "younger person with a crappy job they didn't need any experience to obtain but playing in a band".
    The profit percentage typically isn't much higher in the overseas guitars. The VOLUME is... and WalMart, McDonald's and Amazon are proof of that. Corporate CEO's are responsible for increasing profit every quarter, by pretty much any means necessary and quality eventually gets pushed to make room for "the cheaper way to do something similar".
    It's also worth noting that expensive guitars sit on walls because they often look like carbon copies and customer service people are now very rarely "real sales people" who understand how to sell on ROI.
    The USA guitar market will change, however, over time, because our dollar will decrease in value. That's why I'm setting up my own guitar company to offer USA electrics but with VERY custom options like custom carving and standard options like the buyer's name on the headstock. Guitars are personal and they need to reflect their owners more. Why carbon-copy something that was supposed to be worth the money you need to command? Make something awesome. Make something unique. Otherwise, why make it at all? There's far more profit in selling pharmaceuticals.
    Personally, I want to help people make music. It feels more rewarding than disposable bullcrap or digital drivel. Phil's videos are great for advice, for wisdom and for inside info, while I'm carving out an electric guitar body. He's a very real person, and he's being honest about real things like profit, business reality and even TH-cam ripping off their creators by dropping their pay by 90%. That's INSANE.
    We need to appreciate content creators like this because, I assure you, they are worth more than what TH-cam is paying. Some of them are literally competing with CNN numbers and are being diminished and censored by the platform, more and more. (That's why Rogan went to Spotify.) We need to keep these guys going and genuinely respect the platform they built... but also build our own businesses and content reach. If small USA-based guitar companies want to be profitable, they should, first and foremost, create value by creating cool guitars. If it's cool... it's going to sell. If you make it more personal to the potential buyer, however, you can create something bigger than a guitar. You can create a brand experience worth sharing.

    I’m on my second Stratocaster, which I have highly modified, second ukulele as well, not modified at all, and I’m always shopping for the next thing which will probably be an acoustic. Where I am, all the new guitars for sale in franchise shops are set up. I’ve bought all my instruments in thrift shops though, and a lot of those aren’t set up at all. So these thrift shop guitars, people bought them new, they were completely unplayable, and so they eventually sold them to the thrift shop. Even as a guitarist, when I try out a guitar that isn’t set up properly, I can’t tell if it’s a good guitar or not.
    So I’m with camp set up before you sell. I’ve been fortunate to find cheap instruments which were at least playable, and then I modified them into great instruments thanks to Phil and the like, but most of the guitars I checked out used were not set up, and obviously that’s why they ended up in thrift shops.

    Phil, you are so right. GIbson has already increased prices both for the LP Std's which were $2499, they are now $2,699. Gibson likewise has increased the prices of Mesa Boogie amps by at least $100.00 to $200.00/unit and the custom shop guitars have increased by $500/guitar. Fender's strategy is to add another line of guitars, now the Ultra Luxe is $2399 when the Elite Series sold for around $1899.00. Fender did it by increasing the number of American made lines from 3 to 5 guitars so they can cover the landscape of affordability.

    • @ChrisEck13
      @ChrisEck13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you been paying attention to Fender's prices over the past 5 years? Mexican Fenders now start at only $200 less than made in the USA Gibsons. And Gibson are very different type guitars than Fender which cost much more to manufacture. Inflation has affected everyone and is inevitable for everyone. To call one specific company out for it while defending another one is kind of ridiculous.

    • @edc3093
      @edc3093 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisEck13 you are right, Fender has increased the Mexican made guitars by a considerable amount over the past 5 years. The highest priced Mexican Guitar from Fender were in the $700 range and now the Mexican guitars are north of $1000. What I was referring to was to compare the American guitar lines of Fender and Gibson. Be safe and have a happy holiday!

    As for G&L Tributes-my understanding is that the pickups used in these Indonesian made guitars are in fact made by G&L in the US shop-at least that’s the way their Asian Tribute line was originally set up. And the Tribute bridges are licensed Asian made nearly exact copies of the original G& L design bridges (2 pt tremolo bridge and saddle lock hard tail bridge). Has this arrangement changed? Also, supposedly G&L actually inspects their imported Tribute guitars at their US shop before they are distributed-which theoretically allows them to weed out any horrible QC defective instruments-though to be honest, given the size of the G&L USA operation it is almost impossible to believe that they give the same QC attention to their Tribute line that they do to each and every USA made guitars.
    G&L Tribute prices are rising just like all other guitars, no doubt due to inflation that is affecting everything. At least they are starting to offer a wider variety if color choices in past year which has been one of my personal cons over their guitars vs Fender MIM (although honestly G&L Tribute and Squire Classic Vibe are similar in numbers of color options and prices-but I think G&L Tribute pickups are better overall than Squier line pickups.)
    I still dont understand why G&L doesnt invest more resources into advertising and promoting their USA line-a custom ordered G&L is on par with a Fender Custom shop guitar in terms of quality and can be had at same price as a regular American made Fender. Hard to understand why G&L doesnt push their Fullerton range of US made guitars as direct competition with regular US Fenders and then also promote their G&L custom shop-seems like they could make more profit by making more Fullerton line guitars which come with preset features and specs with a limited range of colors and sell for price point a little below regular US Fenders. It just seems to me that G&L could produce and sell more of their Fullerton line and still run a custom order shop and actually charge a bit more for a custom ordered guitar and still come in far below what Fender Custom shop guitars cost. G&L US makes great quality guitars-and fact that their resale value doesn’t hold like an American Fender or Gibson I think is a direct consequence of their lack of marketing savvy-they should have aggressively marketed their founding and design input by Leo Fender the man himself while he was still alive and established a broader market footprint and directly challenged Fender then-they would I think be a bigger operation with a wider loyal following now had they done so.

    • @yurimodin7333

Fender was temporarily shut down while relocating to California and most of everything they made came out of that plant and they were incredible! I saw a Fender Custom Shop video about just necks, and the tech said that the neck changes the tone. Even the frets change the tone. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the final word on the matter. Every little thing changes tone in my experience.
    People saying 90% or more of the tone is the pickups, that’s completely ridiculous. That’s basically saying I can put my pickups in absolutely any make and model of guitar and it will sound the same; completely ridiculous.

      You’re not taking into account the degree of change. Every little thing may make a minuscule difference but some are massive. Nobody said it would sound the same! A pickup swap can totally transform a guitar, and make it a joy to play. Knowing how your particular amp works can help you get the sound you want. You can debate tonewood forever, but it’s always seems kinda silly. Any minute difference can usually be compensated for some other way. Acoustic guitars are a whole other animal, but even then, the changes are minor and usually escape me. Minor and unimportant in the right hands.

      @nydefect : That a crazy statement. You’re saying so long as you drown the guitar in effects, how the guitar itself sounds doesn’t matter. Well no sh*t Sherlock. Most decent players don’t do that though. The guitar actually matters to any decent player.

    Been a gigging musician since the late 60s, and still trying to wrap my head around why anyone would buy a Peavey. I never saw anyone playing a Peavey. So what gives?

    The dollar value of the average real estate appreciation will more than likely overtake the total resale value of all those guitars over the same time frame.

    Hi Phil, long-time fan of yours, but rarely do I comment. But I have to completely disagree with your "red card" analogy, and applying the same logic to TH-cam. We don't need another "status", or "class" of people who can interact with TH-cam creators. Not everyone can afford to shell out membership costs to get "access" to you, but that doesn't minimize their need to interact. Think outside the box on this. Maybe have people submit a song of theirs (any song), to encourage creativity, and allow others to provide (constructive) feedback and input. The more interactive you are within this community, the more access you have to Phil. I'm just thinking off the top of my head. I get that you want to reward loyalty "points" to those that CAN afford, or are willing to pay a membership cost, but not everyone has the same ability, need, or desire to do so. Or maybe you said too much?

    The perspective shared on buying a first guitar & set-up is spot on. Shotgun vs. Sniper & guitar quality/set-up vs. lessons. All great points...
    ...and oh yeah, the input/output jack... it is both a cable input, but also a tonal output. When it is sold or you are plugging in, it is a cable input. Once you are playing it plugged in, it is a tonal output, but plugged or unplugged it never stops being a cable input. Unplugged, it is never a tonal output.

    import instruments cant ever reach price parity with USA! that's what car makers said in the 80's and they were wrong. Yes, old Chevy's are going for big bucks, but no one thinks US made cars of today have anything to do with a 50's Chevy price

    Phil, please do not tell people that posting quality content on Instagram, Facebook, etc. is “FREE.” It's not.
    To create and post quality content, there is a significant up-front investment in gear acquisition (cameras, microphones, lights, drones, etc.) and skill development (video and audio production) AND ongoing costs (your time, software subscriptions, dealing with copyright strikes, repairing and upgrading equipment, etc.).
    Just like with any marketing effort, one has to evaluate the cost-benefit ratio.
