Pink Floyd - Echoes (Live at The Empire Pool, Wembley, London, 1974)

- In 1974, Pink Floyd performed at the Empire Pool in Wembley; within the show they performed the entirety of DSoTM and also performed some tracks that they were working on aswell as Echoes from Meddle. This live show was taped and mixed and has been released over time on various boxsets. The last of these live show tracks was Echoes, which was finally released in the Early Years Boxset, exclusive to the Continu/ation volume. Since then, this track hasn't seen a re-release anywhere so I decided to upload the rarity myself.
Echoes, in particular, has some noticeable trivia to it. This was one of the final performances of the track in its entirety until partially being brought back in '87. Aswell as this, this live version features Dick Parry, a Pink Floyd staple who's appeared on various tracks throughout the bands history, on sax. The additional saxophone adds a nice new layer to this classic track.
Maybe it's because it's live after The Dark Side of the Moon was released, so it sounds like Echoes is the song from that album. The fact that it resembles the tone of the albums released at the time is a big reason why I don't get tired of listening to various Echoes live.
That'll be the sax and backing singers. I've always liked this version. Dave is MUCH more minimalist as well. Very different take to the earlier versions.
This bass tone from Roger, THIS tone is THE tone.
Unpopular opinion the four minute funk movement of echoes its the best four minutes in music history
It's a popular opinion to me!
My favourite piece of music ever ❤
Oh 100% soooo much fun on bass man

That’s quite a popular Floyd opinion
One note and we all knew. RIP RICHARD

At least he lived fairly long

That first sax solo sent shivers down my spine... my golly. Love the sound of this band so unbelievably much. I will never grow tired of that funk section!!
Dick Parry and the backing vox (Venetta Fields, Clydie King?) give this version a lovely "Dark Side" feel and you can hear what "Time" and "Eclipse" originated from, but on the BBC 1971 version Rog and Nick absolutely nail the groove of the funk section and that's my favourite version.

*EDIT: Seen alot of people mention the mixing of this version.*
I am 99% sure this is the 2016 remaster of the live track from the bonus volume "1971 CONTINU/ATION" although I could be wrong...
I believe it is the Early Years version. You can clearly see the difference in mixing with the bootleg version (Live at the BBC 1974). I love this version with a sax solo (and incredible that in 1975 they changed the location of the sax solo).
Didn't they also do this entire setlist (plus have a cigar) on the NA tour in 75? Think technically the last performance would be June 28th 75 in Ontario
@@thatfellarosto right you are! The WYWH tour in 1975 was essentially a fourth leg to the Dark Side of the Moon Tour lol!
@@LeoFraga941975 version has intro and end solos
one of the things i like about echoes is that there are so many different versions that fit different moods. i love them all very much.
I've been chasing Gilmour's guitar tone my entire life! My new favorite live recording of Echoes thanks for the upload Josh
I listened with my little brother on our stapelbed. Thank you boys....😢
This version is so much better than a version I’ve been listening to for months now

Thumb up 10. I agree. Same song...but sounds like from another dimension. Amazing. When I first heard it , what is is this ? A super remix?
I think the best one is the one that they did in 2005 I think. It was the last tour that gilmour and Wright did and it was the last time echoes was played live and it is amazing
Hard to compete with the Live at Pompeii version
I saw this version of ECHOES in june 1975. It was the same with the sax, plus animation accompaniment!
I love Rogers bass keeping it all together and moving, gotta have that bottom!. Peace.
Some additional trivia besides the saxophone solo is the replacement of the Farfisa organ solo with the Hammond organ (on which he plays the chords) and the Minimoog (on which he improvises the solo). This can be heard from 14:33 to 18:21, but it can be better heard from 17:26 when the Minimoog becomes louder. Also, both the Minimoog and the Hammond organ (as usually) are played through Leslie speakers, as well as the guitar. This happens on most songs (if not all) from this concert and it was usually how they did things at that time.
I've been listening to this song since I was 13, I'm 47 now. This is my first time hearing this version. You can hear how the song evolved in 3-4 years, and the band sounds so tight and polished. Just goes to show what years of studio work and touring does. I'm guessing after the success of DSOTM, they elevated to another level of musical professionalism.
totally agree with you, listen since i was 12, 54 know.....continue for the rest of my live.....
you are quite right, remember these lads were quite young early 20's and mid 20's for DSOTM,a few years of touring and personal experience matures one,the outcome is pure gold ,musically
Actually, with the background singers and all, the saxophone, this version is what I would call the "easy listening Echoes" or the "yachting Echoes".
Sure, it's "polished", but perhaps a bit too much.
Compare with gigs from mid-1971.....Crystal Palace, etc. It's raw then, minimal embellishments, therefore starved for subtlety or nuances... having just been born from "nothing" and thrown into this shitty little world of ours from the far-flung outlying reaches of the cosmos.
@@nickgodalin6487yes, I actually prefer the earlier versions of the song. The Live at Pompeii version is still the best I've heard over all of the bootlegs from that era. My preference of course. A lot of people love the Gdansk version, I honestly don't know why. It's very interesting to me to hear how they played the song over the years.
@@nickgodalin6487 100% what I got from this too, lounge mix
This version is so good! Dick Perry’s sax solo goes so well with this song in my opinion, and the background singers, Nick Masons animal like drumming, Rick Wrights awesome keyboard sound, Gilmours guitar work is killer, and the sound quality is great. One of the best version of echoes
Gilmour's guitar work? Dick played the solo, not Dave!
@@lenini056 Regardless of the solo, Gilmour’s guitar is driving this song. Listen to the funk part. The solo isn’t the only thing Gilmour does.
Is Nick playing drums like Animal from the Muppets?
So much depth to gilmours voice in this cover I fucking love it
Overhead the albatross
Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light
Strangers passing in the street
By chance, two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can?
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
No one speaks and no one tries
No one flies around the sun
Cloudless everyday
You fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky
it's nice to find so many versions of Echoes, with this one one can feel the times performed it and how they thought coud sound better, far more aggresive than previous versions
It's fun to feel the difference between delicate and rough in each live.
This smooth version of echoes Pompeii is legendary but this 1974 really well done love the sax solo a nice touch this is a neat take on it tdsotm reflects on this version's sound
15:30 just great, different from other versions. Keyboard seems to be the same than Nothing 14.
I wish I have 10 thumbs !
Ahhhhh the universe plays a tune🙌 the music of creation. When they made the universe....this was the accompanying orchestra
David’s vocals are incredible on this one
It sounds like the 2006 version from Gdansk
Just by far one if not the best version of echoes.
The floyd just need to release the whole 1974 wembley bbc recorded show as a 2 disc set. They keep doing rereleases but holding back on so much good material to put out for us fans!!
they really should but instead they've put it out over time through different releases... i've compiled all the show that has been released on this playlist here! th-cam.com/play/PLW4Gibbqo4Gcsqb4pmE0nC_HpNC4Ck7C8.html

And here we are celebrating 50 years of dsotm with a rerelease of the second disc of the experience edition still without echoes. If only they’d allow a physical release of echoes from this 1974 show without having to fork out an obscene amount for a box set we already have 99% of!

A masterpiece, way ahead of their time, quality recording, 💯❤️
1971, I was born in March. I am 52 Now and No One Tells When To Wake Up, And When To Go To Sleep...
This should be some cool music to listen to during work from home during this pandemic. Pandemic nightmare.... Make time stand still.... This at least make time flows.....
This is a great version. The 3 best live recordings of Echoes are BBC in Concert, Pompeii and this one.
I have to say Gdansk is among the best.
@@ivanbudilov Every version is the best version :)

The Mike Millard forum recording is this version but has a rawer more aggressive sound
Gilmours Gdańsk is great too. Has a fantastic outro to it.
La ripresa di Rich Wright è qualcosa di mai sentito ed inarrivabile!!!! Trovo stupendo anche il basso di Roger Waters!!!
Io invece trovo stupendi tutti , Pink Floyd per sempre
So, the setlist comprised half of Wish You Were Here, followed by most of Animals, followed by all of Dark Side of the Moon and then half of Meddle as an encore?
You got your money's worth in those days, didn't you?
yeah, atleast one of those days
I just looked up a ticket stub, 1.65 pounds or $13 and change in 2024 money
Sounds of eternity, hard to beat, one of PF's best, guitar and keyboard are from another world, melancholy, depth, I really admire this band.

Masterfull musicianship, umrivalled, sublime, a time capsule of excellemce....beautific......

What a clean SBD recording. I hope there's anything else of this quality in the vaults.
Lots, actually. If you look around, you can find both high quality SBD recordings and high quality crowd recordings throughout their career; as well as just recordings in general of just about any concert Pink Floyd ever played. Another show that I HIGHLY recommend is May 9, 1977 Oakland

Хорошая вещь , а ведь были совсем молодыми пацанами , и так глубоко мыслили .
I like versions with the guitar solo instead of the sax solo more, like the great version from 1971 at the BBC.
i love this version, and the're is a sax sound which is make it so wonderful. and today we will never heard echoes again, because dave doesn't want to sing it again beacuse Rick is gone

That sax solo continues to go down in history as one of the biggest "what we're you thinking" moments in Floyd history!
I can’t tell if your saying the sax solo is genuinely good, or if it’s bad. No matter what your response is this is the best sax solo on echoes live during the whole wish you were here tour
I agree the guitar on this track ONLY !!
Bullshit. Just because it's not the way you've heard it for 45 years doesn't make it bad. I'm pleasantly surprised.
If it weren't for that terrible misfire this would probably be the best version of Echoes I've ever heard.
Great version....
Magnifici entusiasmanti ❤😊
not debating the sax vs guitar solo here but the sound quality is profound. The Backing vocals are also something i haven't heard before
Great version of Echoes
Tripping again😍🙌 truffles 🙌 liquid lsa......im loving life🙌
The first half consisted of 1) Shine on you Crazy Diamond 2) Raving and Drooling (Sheep) 3) You Gotta Be Crazy (Dogs). Second half - Dark Side of the Moon. encore - Echoes.
this is echoes if it was from wish you were here album, the sax says it all
Essa é uma ótima versão, parabéns!
Pink Floyd , is more ... it means more than Windows , than earth ...name , when u hear it ....its somethin unusual , like touch of 9th galaxy .....fuck! Shine On!
It almost reminds me of Zeppelin's "No Quarter" the way it starts out.
THANK YOU
imagine how this would sound with the guitar solo before the funk section sang like the great gig in the sky
I love this version but being honest I don't like the sax solo I'd much rather prefer a guitar solo instead still a killer song though.
Entusiasmante live the early years pink floid
Wow... Thank you for THIS!
awesome version!!!

this mix is better than the 2011 immersion set versions of the rest of the wembley show
This was at a pool. So u could dose, swim, and floyd out all at the same time? Damn I wish I coulda been there
Mu favorite part jas always been after the whale noises when Rick comes in with the trippy Farfisa.
David's voice is looking like it was taken from live at gdansk(not complaining)

I wish the sax solo segued into a guitar solo or had a guitar solo superimposed onto it
An epiphany on psychedelics🙌😍
Ngl I listened to it on acid and it was kinda mid. Celestial voices live at pompeii on mushroom was heavenly though
I was there
Pudieron, al fin, hacer algo como echoes. La tocaron los siguientes años y después de la madurez del dark side, hicieron esta versión, añejándola y casi como despidiéndola. Esta, la de bbc 1971 y obvio la de pompeii, son las meras buenas.
Hollywood Bowl 1972 is THE ONE !
Anyone can explain to me who is the responsible for the non existence of footage from these concerts. Waters? Gilmour? The band producers?
Mainly it had to do with people still thinking they weren't going to be big since syd was no longer with the band(at this time they havent had any hits since syd was still a member)
Waters, he kept the footage for this long time
@@bryantcuriel1641 what?? I thought dsotm launched them up to success and they were no well known by this point
They didn't seem much interested in just filming concerts. Amazing now, given how it became a staple. But back then, bands generally only filmed concerts to make a movie to be seen at the cinema.
They did film Set The Controls during 73 and Careful with that Axe in 72. But not Dark Side!
Also I don't think Roger Waters secretly has a treasure trove of Floyd footage - that's ridiculous.
I still prefer the Sep71 BBC recording to this one. As cool as the added vocalists and saxophone are, this version has always felt more rushed and aggressive to me. This is easily a better, more cohesive rendition than any cut of the Pompeii recordings which are the unfortunate (imo) introduction so many people get to this great song.
Echoes live at radio City music hall in 1973 is really good
🚬👽🍺 ...wow...!
21:20 choir, keyboards
Que agradable es escuchar la música a través de un saxofon.... Y más viniendo de un tenor como Dick Parry que acompañó a la formación durante un buen período
i actually kinda prefer the sax over the guitar solo
Was the vocal overdubbed from a more recent show? The phrasing and vocal timbre sound like a much older Gilmour from what I'd expect in 1974.

The sound quality is amazing but this version sucks. The sax is annonying .
Dont like the vocals on this one
(Forgive me, I posted the below before reading the description .. So 1974 opposed to 1971 but STILL as a musician the drummer, bassist and keyboardist on this version does NOT sound at all like Nick, Roger or Richard, all 3 of them have totally different playing styles than what I hear on this .. Once again, please tell me I’m wrong if I am and I will be humbled and put my hands up!! )
Is this really the Floyd in 1971?? The drummer and bass player (In my opinion) do not sound like Nick or Roger at all!! Also the keys are far to ‘tame’ for Richard in 1971 … tell me I’m wrong … PLEASE but I think this isn’t the Floyd … compare this to earlier and later versions by them and you can 100% tell the similarities of Nick, Roger and Richard … This sticks out like a sore thumb to me …. I totally accept if I’m wrong and I’ll put my hands up if I am .. but they are not the same musicians, also this is a VERY VERY CLEAN, polished and well produced track for a live performance at a stadium in 1974… F**king awesome version though!!! 👊🏻👊🏻😮
Get rid of the sax and I'll listen to this version.
Otherwise I'll keep on listening to the Pompeii version.
Gilmour and Wright vocals are mixed more balanced on the Pompeii version, also.
