Great video Josh like always!! 👍 after I jump in headfirst with the Nikon system I started with the Z62 and then purchased a Z 50 and it was a comfortable little camera to shoot with but it just was not good enough once you have shot with the Z62 obviously so I sold it after about a month of using it and I just did what you did with your D500 and your D850 I just bought a Z7 to go with my Z62 and figured if I wanted to shoot the Z7 in prayer mode it would be better than having the Z50 so it is kind of like having two cameras in one. I loved your video and I loved your Steve Jobs impersonation. Lol. Your video and your audio are top notch I love the Depth in your set With the lamp in the background it looks much better than most people when they have colored LEDs in the background because that is becoming routine and played out. Keep up the great work and just hang in there with Nikon I promise they will show up to the game eventually and I hope sooner rather than later because they really need to work on their auto focus tracking as a Nikon lover I can’t ignore the facts and the truth but their image quality in their file dynamic range is just absolutely Out of this world.

As I mentioned in a previous video you did which by the way I really enjoy your videos, I bought the Z50 to have a camera in my pocket at all times and I love it. I don't shoot sports or bird, mostly street photography and stills inside the house and it gets the job done really good. I don't own a FX and I can'T wait to have one but until then this little machine does well what I need it for. videos are great. Maybe I'dd have a different opinion if I had a Full Frame to compare it to, but indeed you have to work more to get a good shot, composition, background, rules, settings, but it's still part of my fun.

Thanks for confirming what I suspected all along. There is a change of the focussing method in the mirrorless. On paper it is better and I think it will eventually be better, but not on the first try. There are decades of of know-how that the mirrorless have to overcome.

My most liked image on Instagram was taken with a rented Z50. I rented some other mirrorless cameras, and ended up with the Z5 because of the full frame sensor, and the $998 price tag.

While I expected the z50 to not be as good for birds as the full frame Z cameras, I didn't expect there to be that much of a gap, since the nikon's mirrorless autofocus system is behind canon and sony's as of now.
While I'm interested to see how it performs with a lighter prime like the 300 and 500 like you said, what I'm really interested in is how it compares to nikon's crop dslrs OTHER THAN THE d500, like the 5000 or 3000 series in BiF,etc since they won't need an adapter unlike the Z50.
You already have a bunch of f-mount glass and I really like the parameters you compare the cameras on.

Really appreciate the honesty man, i own a Z50, use it for macro (insect) photography and its a little beast. I have heard many people saying that it pairs well with the 200-500 with the FTZ for birds. Hope Nikon launches their long awaited telephotos for Z mount. hope u revisit it some day.
I plan to revisit it if and when the native lenses get released. we are just handicapped by lens limitations.

Perfect timing! Considering selling my Z50 - it's a very capable little camera but it's less than ideal for BIF, as you point out. And my Z6II just gets all my attention lately 😍
I'd like to see the Z50 on some other lenses, I'm curious about the 300 & 500. I can say it pairs well with the 200-500 (which takes less of an AF speed hit on the FTZ). The 600 4 on the FTZ is really the hardest test for this little guy.

I got the Z50 to go along with a Z6. My bird photography is more at the zoo or on occasion when I’m out on hikes. Works fine for that. I like it’s size and the extra reach I get with my longer f lenses for travel and landscape photography. Image quality for APSC is great
Yeah, the image quality is fantastic. Just a little lacking in the AF performance.
@@BayouJosh now, march 2023, with the firmware 2.4 the autofocus improves a lot. It's faster, more accurate and stickier
@BayouJosh there is a new firmware 2.5 that just came out that takes the auto focus even further from the 2.4 update. You should test it now but with a Z lense.
You seem to have a great grasp on these cameras and I always appreciate honest reviews like these. Great video! I am currently looking to upgrade from my Sony X10iv, especially in regards to low light performance. I like the extra reach of the crop sensor cameras so I was looking at this little Z50. Would you say it's a good choice for someone doing a lot of wildlife photography but is less into birding (I'm doing safaris and local foxes/deer...)? Any opinions on the Nikon Z-system in general? It seems to be lagging behind Canon/Sony but I'm not sure if Nikon will manage to close the gap or if it will only increase from now on.
Yes and no. Yes because Nikon color science and image quality is always fantastic. No because the lens selections are just horrible right now. That above all is the most frustrating part. You will have to go with older Fmount lenses with the understanding that the new lenses could come out any month now. I would just put myself in a holding patter for now unless you just went with another brand.
Just to add that the Z50 is good for macro where you can just slow down, use focus peaking and chill
Yeah, I agree. as long as your not chasing anything that is moving. It did great with AF in video mode but really struggled grabbing things in the air.
I recently got into bird photography, i was using D5100 and wanted the upgrade my camera body. And as i am familiar with the nikon ecosystem for more than 12 years now wanted a nikon body only. So the Z50 and the D7500 caught my eye. After much research and some testing i went for the D7500 because of the easier lens compatibility and AF tracking as when tracking a moving object its kinda difficult to focus with the Z50 when using the ftz adapter and an F mount lens. I am yet to test the field performance of the D7500, will update once i'm done!

I am learning a lot from you when it comes to camera choices. I currently use a Nikon D7500 and a year ago got the Z50. I am purely amateur and appreciate your common sense evaluation of the Z50. In general, I love the Z50, but I agree with you about the birds in flight focusing and since I do mainly bird photography find it very frustrating at times. So I am waiting and hoping for the next Nikon sale to possibly purchase the Z6ii. I also am considering the Z5, but the less than 5 fps seems like a real deal breaker. My question for you is in reference to whom the Z6ii is designed for. I worry it may be overkill when it comes to my skills and nonprofessional needs.
If you can find one at a price you can afford, it is for you. First of all, Full frame image quality is just better. It's creamier and the low light performance is so much better. When it comes to purchasing gear. I want something I can grow with or grow in to. NOT GROW OUT OF! That is tough considering that there is always something better. But, it is easy to grow out of Crop sensor cameras considering their limitations. any 24mp or better full frame camera is something you will enjoy for years to come. Plus, with firmware updates, the mirrorless platforms seem to grow with you. Then there are lenses......

Nice review, I feel the same about full frame. I went from D610 to a D7500 now back to the full frame D780.
It is hard to go back to DX after having full frame.
Very honest review. Not too many TH-camrs will do ths. But good luck getting another camera to test LOL..all kidding aside, I went to B&H online and they have a used one for $600! That is not good considering how new the Z line is. The owner who traded that one in probably felt the same as you and went with a Z6/Z7.
Yeah, to put it in perspective, it was about 80% performance of the Z6II at less than half the price. Not all bad.

Great review. I doubted that the Z50 was up to the task of birds in flight. I was thinking of trying it but I was also thinking of getting the 200-500 for my D7500. I get what you say about FF but not everyone can afford it. Honestly, I still miss my old Canon 7D and the 100-400 that I had. If the light was good, you had a good chance of getting some decent flight shots. I do think your idea about the newer Nikon prime telephotos is a good one.

I have this camera and use it for bird photography. I could use some tips on autofocus. I use a 500mm lens with the ftz adapter. I have an old D5000 and I’ve wondered if that would perform better .
I think both cameras are equal in performance concerning AF and Image quality. I just think the video capabilities are better on the Z50. I typically use single point af and keep the focus mode in AF-c with those cameras. try that.
Always appreciate your honesty on Nikon equipment. I played with Z50 in store & l felt it cheap & plastic compared to my Z6. I feel there are 2 issues Nikon need to get up to scratch at the moment & that is autofocus for wildlife & native Z lenses for wildlife. There are a whole lot of Nikon wildlife photographers not getting catered to with modern equipment the time is now to release the Z9 with the 100/400mm & the 200/600mm Z lenses & yes both.

I believe that if Nikon had a competitive autofocus system for native telephotos the Z9 would be for sale now. The bigger question is how long will it take...?
@@lcador9 well l was going to upgrade to Z6ii in the hope that with dual processors wildlife autofocus would be added as a firmware update instead l went to R6 & could not be happier & now don’t believe it will come to Zii
Have a D7200, Z50 & Z5 I find myself picking up the Z5 more lately. My Sigma 150-600 does pair up with the Z50 well for what's it worth. Nice video!

@@BayouJosh I own both the Z7 & Z50 (you can't go too far wrong with both in the boot) and I don't, in any, way think the Z50 feels cheap. I have to say it does have its limitations but as you pointed out at its cost point that is what you would expect.
Firmware 2.4 improves the autofocus a lot
I’ve been considering one of these not for wildlife but for vlogging and making docu-vlogs. These things are going for dirt cheap on the used market right now. I have the Z6ii for more serious photography but I’d like a light little camera to bring along and film my photographic and outdoor exploits.
I really think the laggy behavior you describe is related to the older F mount glass with the adapter. I have the VR version of your lens and it definitely doesn’t perform how it should with a Z body but all of my native Z mount lenses are snappy and have a great hit rate. I’ll be excited when they come out with that 200-600 Z mount lens. I’d say don’t trust everything you see on TH-cam about Nikon because it’s a good system and it’s getting better. Your images definitely haven’t suffered at all since you sold the D850.
I am in the same boat as you. I have a couple of Z6II's now and that Z50 would make for a great 3rd angle body for video. It is crappy on the big glass though. Painfully so. I noticed a huge difference when I pulled the Z50 off and put the Z6II on. I wouldn't mind putting the 20mm 1.8 on the z50 though. that would give me the equivalent of a 30mm. I just don't know how often that would happen. but yeah, it would be a great vlogging camera.

As someone whose budget and back insists on smaller cameras, I appreciated this review just as much as I enjoyed your look at the R5. It's not that I expect you to change systems or camera models but it's interesting to get the perspective of someone who shoots a DSLR standout like the D850, on some of the mirrorless options. Any chance you'd consider taking a Lumix G9 (with the 2.4 software upgrade) and 100-400mm lens, into the field for a few days? I'd love to have the R5 but back and bank account want me to look at the G9:)

Okay, first of all, thanks for this video!
I haven't tried the Z50, but I think, because you know the quality of the Z6II and the Z7II, you have extremely high demands, in comparison to someone like me, because I still use the Nikon D90 with the Sigma 150-500 (the camera is 12 years and the lens is about 9 years old) and I would say, even the worst crop sensor camera under 4 years is faster than my Nikon D90.
So, I think, the definition of a fast AF is variable (except you measure it).

Thanks for watching. Glad it helped. If you are set on a crop sensor camera and you are not concerned too much about video. take a close look at a D500. Hands down the best nikon crop sensor camera ever.
@@BayouJosh I want the D500, since I heard, how good this camera is, but money is always a big problem in my case (I'm 16 years old and in an apprenticeship), but I'll buy the D500 as soon as possible... maybe I'll test the Z50 first, but for wildlife I think, the D500 is way better...

Great video in general your videos are really helpful thanks first of all. Recently, I bought z50 with an ftz adapter. Then, I also bought sigma 105mm macro. However, I become inclined to sell all those Nikon gears and switch to Sony after I spent so many hours for searching tele lens. I am seeking for ecosystem where I can upgrade my gears later (switching to decent full frame for example). It's very disappointing to see there is no native lens like Sony 200-600 in z mount which is not extremely expensive but provides a spectacular value. My primary target is birds and insects(macro). Do you have any advice. Should I switch to Sony? I know Nikon plans to release 200-600 but still there is ambiguity in terms of date and price. Sony seems an expensive brand at first glance but overall z mounts lenses cost much more.
I understand the conflict. My wife and I just went through this and settled on a Sony camera for her. We can sit back and wait on Nikon or just get a brand that’s available with the options we want. We went with a Sony a7iv and 100-400 lens. The Af is fast and accurate with animal and bird eye tracking and 33 mp is perfect for what she needs. Good luck.
@@BayouJosh your comments have value of gold considering me being very new in this universe. I search a lot but still feeling lost. One thing that brings a question mark is I saw lots of comments regarding Nikon’s colors and sharpness being superior than Sony. Considering you have access to both, do you agree?
@@unknown_user_235 I love the image quality out of the Nikons. However, I shoot raw images in both the Nikon and the Sony. Once edited, it is nearly impossible to tell which camera took which image. (and that's a Z9 $5500 and A7iv $2500) If you are spending under $3000 on a camera and you are photographing wildlife, the Canon R6 and Sony A7iv are the two best options. The Nikon image quality does not trump high performance AF. It is just more enjoyable taking pictures when you are nailing the focus over and over again. Is Sony sharpening a little much? yes, at times. However, Like I said, that can all be fixed in 3 seconds in Lightroom. The next option is to wait and see if Nikon comes out with something this year that has better AF. Or, perhaps they will release a firmware update on the Z6II or Z7II that significantly increases AF performance. But right now, they are lagging in that department. I hope that helps.

@@BayouJosh, thanks for the helpful review. I "downgraded" from a Nikon D750 to a Z50 with FTZ adapter about 15 months ago, and have been happy with the little camera for general photography. But since then, I have changed mostly to bird photography. I use the Z50, FTZ, TC14e iii, and AF-S 200-500mm F/5.6. For still or perched birds, the kit works great. But I agree that it stinks for birds in flight. I'll be lucky to get 1 in 100 decent shots of a flying bird. So, I'm considering switching to a Canon R7, starting with the RF 100-400 lens and possibly upgrading to the RF 100-500 lens, or something else, later. My guess is that you have reviewed that combo, so I'll take a look.
Got to agree, I still prefer my D500. Only use the Z50 as a backup, for video and badgers/deer where the silent shutter is great. I'm getting a 500mm pf as soon as it comes into stock so I'll let you know how it works on the Z50

I use the Z50 with 500mm PF. BiF is next to useless, ok for still stuff, just! I'm waiting for 200-600mm Z! See how it does then! Think the adapter somehow is slowly it down! They need to come to the party soon! Hope that helps!
The 500 PF also struggles for BIF on all the mirrorless models.
Thank you for a wonderful review of Z50. When I decided to get into Z- system, sensor size was one of my concerns and I decided to get Z6 ii. I’m happy with my decision. Now, I’m looking for a long lens for bird photography and kind of torn between getting the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary or Nikon 200-500 and waiting for the Z 100-400 or Z 200-600 to release. Do you have any information regarding when these lenses will be released. I noticed your comment on Z lenses to be more compatible than non-Z lenses, especially, when it comes to auto focusing. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
It is all rumors right now. no real release dates. However, the S-line lenses released thus far have been fantastic. The AF on the new 70-200 is so much better than the Fmount 70-200. I anticipate it will be the same for the 100-400 and 200-600.
The Z 200-600/5.6-6.3 S, Z 400/2.8 S and Z 600/4 S are to be released some time around Q3/Q4 2022, according to Nikon.
There will be plenty of FX cameras out, but none with proper lenses. Nikon mentality; "Let's build a lot of cameras but no lenses". LOL
@@BayouJosh Thank you for your quick response and the information. I think I'll get the 200-500 for now and think about the Z lenses when they are released in 2022 as suggested by @BlackWolf. My one concern is the weight of the lens mainly because I had dislocated my left shoulder and partially injured the right one in 2011 falling down from a volcano in Ecuador when took some students to study the difference between upland and lowland rainforest ecosystem. Because of the weight reason, I was also considering Sigma 150-600 Contemporary but after watching many TH-cam videos, reading a number of reviews, and reading posts in some related Facebook groups, I'll give the Nikon a try. If the weight becomes really unbearable, then will use it with the tripod or monopod. What is your opinion about the Sigma lens? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again.

I swapped frequently between dynamic, small area, wide area and pinpoint. I felt like the dynamic did a little better job. if i could just keep the subject on the points of the dynamic area, it did OK.

Honest review....it is what it is...
I wish it was more.
The reason I asked about the AF Modes is that I used a Z50 with the kit 50-250 4.5-6.3 and with the Tamron 18-400 3.5-6.3 to shoot water skiers. The subjects are much bigger than birds obviously and thus likely easier to lock on to but in AFC mode and Wide Area Small I was able to track fast moving subject very effectively with almost all shots in focus - including when I used the Tamron lens via the FTZ adapter - so I think the AF speed is fast enough with the Z50 - whether it can pick out the small bird from far away as easily is unknown - but I have heard that if you are against a blue sky that the Auto Area AF does a great job tracking.
Also, since you are using large professional lenses with lots of glass and moving elements inside, maybe the batter power from the Z50 is too weak to move all those elements quickly - the battery is small and not very powerful on the Z50 (don't know just guessing).
But with the DX kit lens and the Tamron lens that are much smaller because they are DX and 'slower' aperture lenses, I had a high hit rate tracking fast action.
great point and that is exactly my reasoning behind the caveat about bird photography being the ultimate test for AF. I would have no problem with the z50 it I was shooting large subjects.

Hi Josh, that around 2:22 needs some clarification: if you eg compare D500 and D850, the pixel pitch of both sensors is almost identical. The big difference: D850 has a BSI sensor, D500 (and unfortunately the D6, which has the same sensor like D5) has not. That causes the noise difference, which is less coming from BSI sensors. Please don’t misunderstand the bracketed D6 quote above, noise is no issue on D5/D6 up to ISO 25600, that’s what those cameras are made for. You may reduce raw image size in D850 to DX (true in body crop, no downscaling, nice tiny 20 megapixel raw files at D850 quality “pre cropped”) and if you stick a D850 grip with the big battery EN-EL18 to it, you get kinda D500 (still the best BIF camera) with BSI sensor, except for D500 shoots CH at 10 fps, D850 with grip and big battery 9 fps. The D850 grip also enhances D850 AF accuracy to D500/D5 level. However: the amazing BIF images you show here made by Z50 are at beloved Nikon quality level.

I am hobbyist photography (own the D7200 and Z50) and subscribe to various other channel that are Nikon users. Just like you...everyone mention's (waiting for) the Z9. I simply can't justify the cost of a Z9. Nikon is really falling behind with their AF and lens offering. The z9 may be a great camera for the pro photographer. But for the hobbyist photographer a D500 mirrorless replacement would be awesome. Or improve the AF on the Z6II with it dual processor.
What’s likely, is they will improve the auto focus on the Z6ii and z7ii. Then, they will drop a new version of the Z7 or Z8, making it to where we all have to run out and get another new camera. Consumerism at its finest.

None of the F lenses would do any good on the Z cameras. I just don't understand why it's so hard for Nikon to release the Z 600/4 S and Z 400/2.8 S so people might consider of staying with Nikon and not moving on to Canon or Sony which already have their primes for mirrorless.

It would be a marketing disaster to release these primes that then ended up with subpar performance on all the current mirrorless bodies.

that's tough. AF is better. but the image quality in the old full frame bodies is amazing.

My money is on the Z50. Jpg only, H* 11fps (burst), the Z50 is a tiny D3s. Unlimited power via dummy battery.
I have used the FTZ adapter with the Tamron F2.8 G VXD etc. and it worked flawlessly. I usually use the Nikkor 24mm-200mm Full Frame lens and it is fantastic. I agree with your accessment of the Z50 but for a cheaper camera then it's siblings of the Z mount line it's great. I love the grip and the weight of the camera. I have put a Smallrig cage and wooden handle and I have better stability while taking pictures. The Nikon Zfc has no grip and analog dials for the classic look but the auto focusing is much better. The Zfc uses the same battery too as the Z50.

Z50 or Canon Rp? For makro and landscape.
Both are great. I am partial to full frame sensors so I would definitely choose the Rp in this case. The Nikon Z5 is full frame and would be a great option. Same specs as the RP but I prefer Nikon. It's all preference really. Stick to full frame 35mm format for landscape. You'll be happier in the end.

This video is now nearly a year old. I have heard there were early AF issues with the Z50 but they have been addressed and AF is better now. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thanks.
DX are more noise, but use Nikon NR or Topaz to reduce ISO noise

The Z50 was made to compete with mobile devices, not standard high performance cameras.
You said it Josh, there are no native lenses for the Z system right now. I think, you should stick to the D500 which has the same AF you find on the D5... a great performer especially when you boost it to 'release only'. Your keeper rate will shoot up exponentially. The Z system is still a half-baked system imo, doing worse than Canon and Sony right now. It won't be long, we shall see what the Z9 brings to the table. Till then, stick to DSLRs for photography and perhaps Z6 II for videography (shoot raw video i.e. get the camera modified by Nikon).

@@BayouJosh For action photography here is nothing better than a DSLR. No black out in the viewfinder, rapid focus acquisition, keeper rates and most of all, current lenses are natives to DSLRs bodies (F lenses to DSLR system). If ain't broken, don't fix it. Yes, you shoot video and then you should definitely use a mirrorless for that, but I fear that Nikon is getting better but still has work to do to catch up with Canon and Sony. Here's an option for you for video only: gert an R6 + 800mm f/11 from Canon, or get a A7S II (used) + a 200-600 from Sony. They don't break the bank, and deliver amazing video quality! (with your wife blame it on me...)
The AF has improved with the latest firmware update. And Nikon never said it was for BIF.

The auto focus system in the Z system is primarily to blame, as most F mount lenses focus fine (and as fast, if not faster) on the Z system than they did with the DSLRs. So most of the issue is with the implementation of the AF system in the current Z line -up (of course the Z9 utilizes a different AF system and hardware and the soon-to-be-released Z8 and probably all subsequent FF cameras at least, will have a greatly improved AF system based on the Z9 spec, with some features removed or reduced to differentiate the different levels, but the Z9 is going to be the basis for all Z cameras I think moving forward from an AF standpoint overall -- again with some exceptions and restrictions for cheaper Z models, but they all will use the new Expeed 7 found in the Z9, and probably some form of a stacked sensor and possibly a shutterless design moving forward).
I have a D500, Z7II, and a Z50 which I use mounted on the 500PF. I would call this an accurate review. Z50 will give you some nice shots of stationary, or slow flying birds; Great Blue Heron. Not fast enough to shoot barn swallows. The Z50 paired with the 500PF is delightful for it's size/wight and a joy to carry, but carry the D500 mounted to the 500PF most days.
Hey Stephen is z50 with latest firmware anywhere comparable to d500 for bird photography, stationary and bird in flight with its high fps and focusing
@@Dhruvarorax at f5.6 I find the performance acceptable for bird photography. However, the speed of focus is not up the level of the D500. I can shoot larger, slow moving, or stationary birds well with the Z50. For smaller, faster birds I always choose the D500. I just love carrying the Z50 along with the 500PF for the small size of the combination, but it is not up to the autofocus speed of the D500.

It's an honest review. However, unless you're a pro photographer making a decent living those nice Z7 and Z pro lenses are out of reach of most amateurs, unless you're an orthopedic surgeon or PI lawyer.

There's something wrong with the way the Z50 renders dark objects, especially black objects.. even if the shot is in focus, the blacks look out of focus.. even if you manually focus.. other than that the camera is pretty fine..

For sub $1k camera I don't think Nikon gonna give you that AF not even other brands.This is more like beginners camera or for people who just want abit more better photos than the phone. Happy shooting 👍🐦🦉🦅🦜

Yeah, It is relative. you can get 80% of the performance for under $1000. That last 20% is super expensive. Really, the last 5% is the most expensive.

I am lost. I have a D500 and my 2nd camera craped out...a D7200 so looking for a new 2nd. If I go to a Z6 all my lenses die. And DSLR is dead. We all know that. So it is full frame mirrorless or bust if I want to stay Nikon. So much money just gone.
those older lenses work quite well with the FTZ adaptor. I used a 20 year old 600f/4 on the z6 for about 6-7 months.

Give me a crappy camera, and I will get an excellent picture. Work on your skills. Don't depend on the cameras capabilities. Become a better photographer. No such thing as the perfect camera if you don't have talent.
I've started with garbage and worked my way up to some pretty fantastic gear. My point is that it is difficult to go back to the tech in that Z50. I took some nice images with it. It just took a lot more effort. Hit rate was half of what I'd get in the D850 or even Z6II for that fact.
@@BayouJosh Given, but you are comparing an entry level mirrorless to a DSLR of substantial heritage and maturity. The Z50 is an entry level mirrorless on the level of what a DSLR like a D5600 might be. And as a person who has owned both for some time, the Z50 blows the D5600 out of the water in performance. In the hands of a photographer who has adapted to this camera, coming from a D750 and an A7r, this camera handles competently. That said, The hit rate of a D500 is astounding for bird photography. But the image quality in the Z50 when practiced is amazing. At less than half the weight. I prefer the backlit buttons on the D500 though. I wish all camera had this. I can't find a D500 at B%H new, refurbished or used. Much easier to lug around my Z50. Liked my Sony a6500, but here I am. Nikon or Sony. Pick your poison. I have a hit rate of 80%+.But I don't spray and pray.

Tough choice. If you plan on doing video, The Z50 is better. Plus Nikon will be focusing all their efforts on mirrorless moving forward.
