    Something important to note about dumb cane is that those little crystals you mentioned are very much like fiberglass and will make your hands feel like you've been playing in a sandbox filled with insulation if you don't wear gloves during propagation. That is a fact that I learned the hard(est) way.

      I found this out last night. I thought my plant was an alocasia plant. I knew something was wrong after I finished pruning it and my fingers started to itch and burn...

    I have one that is 25 years old and was gifted to me by my grandma when she passed. When I receive it, it was already over 5 foot tall lol. It now has babies growing from the base…… and I would like for it to not get any taller but I’m afraid of cutting it and maybe killing my grandma’s plant . Oh and I’m certain on how long she had it and it’s age from that point forward because it was the same yr my son was born and also the same yr I lost my grandfather/ her husband…….. the plant was a gift to her from a family member at the time of his passing.

    Hi Summer! I'm really enjoying this series. I have 2 dieffenbachia's, but don't know the varieties. One is a small one that I purchased recently and the other one is propagating in water. I've had that one for over 20 years. It would get so top heavy, even when staking it, that I would just cut it off, root it in water and repot it. I've had to this numerous times, but they seem to do ok every time. I'm glad it didn't affect Kippee. Thank you for sharing!

    I had one for about 10-15 years, a couple of decades ago. It was a different variety, with brighter green leaves and creamier variegation. They do get straggly as they get older. You can either plant companions in the same pot to try and hide the lengthening stems, or you can cut back and propagate. I’d imagine they’re a good candidate for air layering, but I never tried.

    Did you purposefully pot your dumbcane stalk at an so that you hid more of the cane stalk so you only noticed or saw more of the foliage? For mine I've staked it and just remove the "uglier" leaves and flakes as it grows up. But I love what yours is doing. Also, how do you propagate them? For me when the stalk got unruly I just chopped her and repotted in new soil. She thrives every time, but I was referencing more of the idea of using the stem and not just throwing away the excess I cut. Thank you. Love your channel.

    Hi,
    I am desperately trying to figure out what is going on with my dieffenbachia. It’s been doing great for about 3 1/2 years. It started out as a nice 5” potted plant which I nearly killed. It was reduced to two stalks with three small leaves between them and 3 1/2 years later it a 3-3.5’ tall bushy beautiful plant. Suddenly its lower leaves started to droop then I woke up one morning to it leaning severely over and had to stake it up to keep it upright. All the while it’s still putting out new top leaves like crazy. I am perplexed and have fallen in love with this beauty. I need some advise/help!
    Thanks,
    Miles

  • @debrawarrick2911

    I cannot keep this plant alive. A beautiful 2ft, it completely died off within 2 wks of being transplanted. I planted it in super aerated soil in a taricata pot. Completely perplexed why this one kicked the Bucket on me. I repotted several houseplants that day and this is the only one that didn't make it. :-(

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Question out of curiosity: were it’s leaves straight up vertically (unlike mine) and what light were you giving it?

    • @debrawarrick2911
      @debrawarrick2911 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@summerrayneoakes I believe it was a 'camilla' with yellow center and green edges. Stood more upright. I moved it into a single pot after receiving it as part of a larger arrangement. I brought it to my office and sat it on my desk in an office building, under artificial light. It seemed like a very thirsty plant . The top of the soil was always immediately dry after watering. I watered it twice, the 2 1/2 weeks I had it.

    • @quailquest2392
      @quailquest2392 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Debra Warrick probably didn’t water it enough. These things like to drink. Twice in two and a half weeks? I water mine twice a week minimum. And if the artificial light was just plain office lights it may have died off from not having any efficient light source like grow lights.

Also, the leaves don't hang like the one you're showing! Are there different varieties of Oerstedii, and if so, what's the name for this one? Because it's beautiful, I love the leaves!
