  • Water is life. And Marla is a water crusader. She has set out to change the world with accountable solutions and advocacy. In this Talk she outlines how governments and global stakeholders can realign and mitigate risk and waste. To ultimately try and solve for the 5 billion in funds that is squandered in impoverished communities around the world annually.
With special thanks to the UNIVERSITY OF OREGON for presenting partnership, a world class stage design provided by HENRY V, an incredible legacy bound book provided by PREMIER and to the creative digital craft provided by ENJOY THE WEATHER. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
In the one-stoplight town of Benson, in the Sonoran desert of southern Arizona, Marla learned the important role water plays in providing life and prosperity. After obtaining degrees in both civil and environmental engineering, she founded the nonprofit, Water1st International, to provide water and toilets to 168,000 people in the 1,900 impoverished communities around the World.

Thank you Marla your talk is right, water scarcity is a real thing today and will get worse unless humans change right away the way we use it. More than 70% of the available fresh water is consumed by agriculture and food production must be increased many times to supply the growing population. So, if agriculture requires more fresh water there will be less water available to cities. The solution is that agriculture must be discarded as a human activity. Agriculture has been, and it is the single most devastating activity to earth's ecology. I propose hydroculture as an alternative. Hydroculture is the production of food without using soil and one of its most known activities is Hydroponics, Aeroponics, Aquaponics, etc. Let me explain some benefits. One acre of hydroponics vegetables produces the same amount of food as 10 acres in agriculture. Growth cycle is faster for instance it takes for agriculture 90 days to harvest lettuce with hydroponics production takes less than 60 days. Since there is no need for using soil hydroculture can be performed anywhere that is within cities, in desserts, arid lands, etc. No use of pesticides since production is controlled at least no herbicides. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THAT USES 90 to 95% LESS WATER THAN AGRICULTURE. So the impact is that cities will have more supply of fresh water with less pesticides. My name is Enrique Lulli, I live in Lima - Peru and I hope to receive some feedback. Many thanks.

We have a lot of that in NL and most of the food you get from that system looks wonderful, but tastes like nothing. I even did some of it myself with strawberries and they were alright (well until some bacteria entered my hydroponics system), but they weren’t great when it came to flavour. Very curious how they will solve that one. It could also have been those specific cultivars, but what do I know, i’m no botanist.

Look up Hivare Bazaar in maharashtra india. That is how you solve the water problem in Africa. It only rains between 250 and 350 mm per year there. They are masters of rain water harvesting. Also they plant 3 to 4 crops per year that are decided upon based on how much rain they get. Excellent management. These people used to have nothing. Now they have everything because they have water year round. It didn't cost much either. It was done with every villager volunteering time, and also listening to each other and cooperating. It can be done anywhere.

If all arid and semi arid areas were to begin rainwater harvesting and groundwater replenishment methods currently being used in India and parts of Africa the water shortage would be greatly reduced over time. These are low tech and low cost and sustainable without much maintenance. No need for grand projects to solve everyone's problems at once by outside intervention. The people can be shown how to take their own fate into their own hands.

All the people are thinking about this problem but they are not doing nothing for this. I am also working on water problems projects . Mewat , it's a district of Haryana. It doesn't have any water level and other sources. It's one of the biggest problem for India especially.

  • @royparker7856
    @royparker7856 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Things as simple as showing the people how to construct natural rain water harvesting structures and ground water replenishment structures out of local materials using local labor could alleviate many of the issues of water availability. No need for grand projects requiring millions in investment to make a difference. No need for big water companies coming in and being granted control of area water supplies. It is happening in India, in Africa, and other areas using permaculture and simple, local rainwater harvesting.

The east and west coasts of the U.S. has water at there shores, desalization of the ocean waters that can be pumped in and provide water for drinking, bathing and cooking. Think about navy ships, they get there water from the ocean and run it through desalization units and through treatment units on board and that provides them with an endless supply while out on the sea. Places like california could be doing that now, and not have the water droughts they have. Desalization units can be built on an industrial scale to provide safe water for the coastal states and communities instead of getting it pumped from another state, it's called making an investment for your state. Same goes for any coastal state, it is not rocket science, it is common sense when we have oceans that we can pull water from and make it safe to drink.

Maybe use elektrolisys to run a hydrogen engine like in space, where the oxygen from water supplies the ship, then use the power from the engine to power the ekektrolisys and desalination

While this is nice, what about the water problem coming to America? Our aquafers are running dry right here. California is in big trouble already. Kansas is soon to follow. This is where our food comes from. We have a water crisis right here right now.

Everyone is now saying the same thing - give up meat and dairy and you'll be
part of the solution rather than part of the problem. A meat based
diet uses at least 20 times more water than a plant based diet. Most
people know this but are too stubborn, selfish and egotistical to
change. People hate feeling they're being dictated too, even tho
they're not. It's simply common sense. People say they want a future
for their children but fail to put their money where there mouth is.
It's very simple. Go vegan, live at least 10 years longer and you'll be
in less trouble with the Gods when you die too. Do it!

Another reason that piped water systems improve the lives of women and help break the cycle of poverty is that piped water allows girls the opportunity to attend school rather than carrying water. And more educated women have fewer children. More-educated mothers have better health care, marry later and are significantly more likely to use contraception to space their children. They have better skills for obtaining and evaluating information on health care, disease prevention and nutrition. They also have better access to resources, through earning opportunities and marriage, and can manage them better. They are more likely to recognize the advantages of educating their children.

Yeah, I keep waiting for her to explain why they aren't doing basic stuff like this. I mean, they are carrying 40lb containers of water for hours... so, it isn't a matter of laziness. Good grief, it sounds like that if they AT LEAST took the same path every day and dragged their feet a little they probably would have had an aqueduct already.

I wish this was true and easy to implement but it's not. developing countries such as Ethiopia have growing population there is no pension scheme in place so the old rely on the young for financial support this is first of many problems that plague this country and many like them this, why there are an increase of birth rate and the lack of access education in the country, has lead to the growth of the country but also suffers from a high child mortality rate being 49.6 per 1000 comparing this to Canda which has mortality rate 5.5 per 1000 before they reach the age of 5. so to say the need stop having kids is an unrealistic and idiotic thing to stay. due to Ethiopia being one of the most impoverished nation due increase of famines from climate change is one of the main factors. they do not have enough capital to invest infrastructure like aqueduct as they in debt to the world bank and European union make up half of the country GDP. however, some of this has been cancelled as a result of this they need to give the people technology that can be easily maintained and is not complex's. a solution is a rope pump as they are cheap to maintain and doesn't need to have high tech tools to fix this why they are popular all over Africa. they also have a means of educating the people sanitation so they don't get sick from waterborne disease. so to say it's easy is false and misleading.
some these figure might be slightly off as I'm no means an expert
