    I've got a set, love them in the winter months and out in the brush in North Idaho myself. Mine are a loose copy of a set used by Dutch infantry in the 1960s &1970s. Absolutely right about that bottom strap, they do get hammered, but with a little water proofing, they make my work boots decent winter boots.

    Nice review. You can see their purpose and intent for being issued, but understand why they weren't favorable to the soldiers. You can also see where they might also be repurposed into other things or canableized to repair other things

    Very informative Captain Whitehall, I hadn't thought about protection from snakes. *Liked* the video --- *1st Minn Sharpshooters* channel with Civil War reenactor live fire, hard marching, and rustic adventures ... enlist today.

    You can get a hand sticher, threads, some marking forks ( my name) and the leather all on Amazon. I'm currently working with a semi finished elephant leather for a holster for my 1858. There is also theleatherguy.com for one that you can buy scraps by the pound thing. Others also, do a Google search. Great to do while the TV is on. A board, small finish nails, hammer, heavy tray table and stiching in tools. You are set. You might be suprised at how easy it is with the stich in tool. A number of TH-cam videos on how to use and short cuts. Have fun. ;)

      Hamm 603 already on that for sure with the leather sewing in the past videos I've done. Really chomping at the bit to try and reproduce these accurately.

    Question? Why not just wear high boots

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Later in the war the USSS was documented that some were wearing taller boots than brogans. The leggings were more of a early war item and was a way to make them look more unique and have a European flare as it was part of how the US Military was trying to fashion itself during the time.

      This is purely assumption on my part, but I'd imagine a pair of lower ankle boots, paired with gaiters like these, might offer more ankle mobility (as compared to taller boots, which might offer more ankle support), while still protecting the legs of your pants and tops of your footwear. Like I said earlier, purely a guess on my part.

      Wambaugh, White and Company. A number of us have their contract variant shirts and they are wonderful!

      I'm not sure of anyone carrying these last I checked. The prices I've seen have been absurdly high. You might get lucky if you keep an eye on some place like Ebay.

      Perhaps at first or if you're not mildly flexible. However, if you do it a few times and get to know how they feel when worn right you can get them on fairly easily.
