I know I'm two years late, but here's a tip for anyone who sees this:
For added comfort around the top, you can mimic what Corcoran does with their new boots by adding a nice soft doe leather strap rolled over the edge of the top of the spat. If you've got the patience, you can even stuff additional padding such as cotton or wool under the strap before sewing/cementing it in place. It prevents your leg from becoming raw around that top edge and just helps create a better seal around the top. A super simple but effective improvement on the spat/gaiter design. Good luck!

The Spanish word for these is Polinas or Espiñilleras typically worn by horsemen or vaqueros, the predecessor to the cowboy. Great for riding through thorny brish if they also cover the knee and for preventing snake bites when walking through desert terrain.

Looks great! I've been thinking about doing something similar. Also, I use Chicago Screws in place of rivets when I am just holding something together temporarily or to test out sizing. I have a coffee cup full of old Chicago Screws just for this purpose. Keep up the good work!

I made a pair of plains boot moccasins (pattern Tandy leather) with the boot shaft from 8 oz veg tan and sole from 5-6 oz soft leather, the same leather suggested for motorcycle gear.
Take a look at English riding half-chaps if you like these, very similar. I wear paddock boots and half chaps out dancing. Or did when the clubs were still open.

  • @catsmeow5566

I can relate to not caring about the weird looks. I will wear my pajamas to the store if I don't feel like changing into regular clothes. I have a friend who uses gaiters to protect his lower legs from snake bites in case he runs into a snake out in his rural area. That's actually something I could use. Looking at the gaiters as you're holding them I'm imaging using snaps that look like the rivets (I called them studs in another comment bc I forgot the word) to secure the bottom piece. I'll need something thin but strong for the bottom piece because I only wear flat shoes. Even a small heel hurts my ankles and back.
I really want to make boots too. I was thinking of recycling the bottom soles of some slippers, throwing in some memory foam inserts, and making sure the inside is nice and comfy. I need to check your video listings to see if you ever made boots. I want Jedi boots with hidden buckles/closures. I need custom stuff with my cankles.
I'm all here for the puns!
If you ever want some stiffer material that is a thin cardboard almost like posterboard for FREE, you can go to a Samsclub (maybe even a Costco) and they have these big sheets of thin cardboard that are like paper that they put on to of pallets (under things like paper towels). If you find an empty spot where they haven't thrown the stuff away yet, you can grab it. I happened to be eying it and said to my brother (who was with me at the store) that I wanted to take the large sheets that were just lying there and an employee overheard me. He said "Please take it! Take it all! Then I won't have to deal with it!". They let you take empty boxes too so you can get plenty of free cardboard and it won't cost you anything.
I've seen some people use duct tape and others use masking tape. Is there any advantage to using masking tape over using duct tape?
Ooh, I like the buttons. I think they are called Chicago buttons Chicago screws or something?
I like how these look without stitches.
I know I initially thought about magnetic snaps for the bottom straps, but I bet those chicago screws could work too.

Solid pair of gaiters! I know this is a year later but you mentioned in the video that you want to make a pair of boots some day. I would recommend checking out Harry Rogers on youtube, he's a leather worker/carpenter guy who has done a couple types of leather footwear projects. I'd probably check out his stitchdown style shoe construction video series, that's a great starting point. There are also a lot of shoemakers slowly establishing a presence on youtube, I'd just type in "shoemaking" in the search bar and succumb to the rabbit hole of making shoes lol.

Question for any armor makers, are there any traditional pieces of armor that guarded the main arteries i.e. Brachial (inner upper arm) and Femoral artery (inner thigh)? I'd like to see better coverage for the Carotid arteries too. Is that just covered by chainmail? I think that would make me nervous...

    • @DH-xw6jp
      @DH-xw6jp ปีที่แล้ว

The armpit region and inner thigh were usually chainmail (or leather, if you look at cowbow chaps)
And the throat has a type of armor called a gorget, it mantels your shoulders and acts like a stiff steel collar to protect the neck and collar bone area.
There is also an armor called a Bevor that works the same way as the gorget but goes all the way up the bottom lip, wrapping everything from your jawline/chin down in a steel shell.
Or you could use a chainmail coif (think of it as a chain hood) if you also wanted head protection.

Monty Python courtmartial where gaiters were mentioned: www.dailymotion.com/video/x31xzed
Fawcett: With respect sir, I shall seek to prove that the man before you in the dock being in the possession of the following: one pair of army boots, value three pounds seven and six, one pair of serge trousers, value two pounds three and six, one pair of gaiters value sixty-eight pounds ten shillings, one...
Presiding General: Sixty-eight pounds ten shillings for a pair of gaiters?
Fawcett: (dismissively) They were special gaiters, sir.
    Presiding General: Special gaiters?
Fawcett: Yes, sir, they were made in France. One beret costing fourteen shillings...
Presiding General: What was special about them?
Fawcett: (as if he can hardly be bothered to reply) They were made of a special fabric, sir. The buckles were made of empire silver instead of brass. The total value of the uniform was there...
Presiding General: Why was the accused wearing special gaiters?
Fawcett: (irritably) They were a presentation pair sir, from the regiment. The total value of the uniform...
Presiding General: Why did they present him with a special pair of gaiters?
Fawcett: Sir, it seems to me totally irrelevant to the case whether the gaiters were presented to him or not, sir.
Presiding General: I think the court will be able to judge that for themselves. I want to know why the regiment presented the accused with a special pair of gaiters.
Fawcett: (stifling his impatience) He used to do things for them Sir. The total value of the uniform...
    Presiding General: What things?
Fawcett: (exasperated) He... he used to oblige them, sir. The total value...
    Presiding General: Oblige them?
Fawcett: Yes, sir. The total value of the uniform...
Presiding General: How did he oblige them?
    Fawcett: What sir?
Presiding General: How did he oblige them?
Fawcett: (more and more irritated) He, um... used to make them happy in little ways, sir. The total value of the uniform could therefore not have been less than...
Presiding General: Did he touch them at all?

Presiding General: I want to know how he made them happy.

Presiding General: (quickly) All right! All right! No need to spell it out! What er... what has the accused got to say?
Walters: (taken off guard) What, me?
Presiding General: Yes. What have you got to say?
Walters: What can I say? I mean, how can I encapsulate in mere words my scorn for any military solution? The futility of modern warfare and the hypocrisy by which contemporary government applies one standard to violence within the community and another to violence perpetrated by one community upon another?
