And if I were to add anything else to the system would be to make your tail turn your block into a parry if you use it last and add the the frog suit, which is similar to boots but it also turn your block into a dodge.
1st phase can be cheesed by rng (Earth and Water Vellumentals) 2nd phase you just have to watch out of the super fast ninja stars 3rd you have to not take damage (At least when you have the magic circle ready)
I don't get why people say that Olivia's sacrifice was a "noble" sacrifice. She died of poor wording, plain and simple. Imagine an alternative ending where Olivia worded her wish as "I want to bring back my brother so that we may live happily together.". That's MUCH happier. And just in case that whole crane technique destroys the cranes, just use the paper that the Origami Craftsman carries with him all the time. In a similar vein, I don't understand why people say that Bobby's sacrifice was noble, or at the very least, writing that was any good in any sense of the word. In every other Mario game, Bob-ombs are shown to be able to come back from exploding. Even if Bobby's death is retconning this, it means that King Bob-omb died after his fight with Mario in 64, and Bombette and Admiral Bobbery die the first time Mario uses them. And how do you expect Mario to sleep at night after a boss fight where you shoot Bob-ombs out of a cannon, which explode on contact with the enemy. Other than that, the game has quite good writing.

I'm not sure, the most I've seen in any playthrough so far is 2, which reduced the max HP to somewhere in either the upper 40s or mid 50s, I think.
I managed to get 3 in one run, but I've heard that 4 might be possible. Once you get to 5 though, i believe base slap is a guaranteed kill
