I literally just started crying. I’ve always loved Sweelinck, but this performance and the quality of this video with its graphics - this is a miracle. Thank you.
Who listens to this gorgeous instrument with this perfect acoustic and this genius music delivered with such style and taste and scholarship...and indicates they don’t like it, much less love it? Anytime Keller plays, I come away smarter.
Beautiful, spacious playing...and the sound! It reminds me of walking through the streets of Bruges when the carillon is filling the air with sound. Thank you!
I agree with Andy: magnificent, spacious and impressive playing and sound. I met MG at Brugge in 2010 and was amazed by the work. Significantly advances our understanding of the misunderstood Ruckers doubles of this time. I want one! The extra freedom imparted to the soundboard through the lower tension creates an extraordinary resonance - it sounds like 6 sets of strings are playing, but with total focus and clarity..
What an incredible Sweelinck recital you gave this afternoon in the Lutherse Kerk Utrecht! Thank you. I definitely hope that you will record all those fine Sweelinck-tunes on a cd someday. Magnificent tone and tuning in the hands of a maestro.
Easily the finest Ruckers copy in existence. Tonally magnificent, and the appearance is 'bang on', including the appearnce of the keyboards - absolutely matching extant contemporary paintings. As for the music and performance, what can I say? I can add nothing except that this is nine minutes of sheer perfection. Thank you for making a few minutes of Lockdown bearable :-)
I come back to this video every couple of months or so to bask in the glory of this instrument. I have my own Griewisch harpsichord at home, still I can't help but be jealous ;-)
I too love the gamut illustration...I don't know what one is, but if it's that fancy period-looking harmony aid at the side then I think it's great. I don't know why more videos aren't shown this way...not just for Baroque music
Équilibre très réussi entre composition, instrument et interprétation : de la vraie et bonne musique. Il y a aussi le plaisir rare d'entendre des résultantes de 24' au grave. C'est une découverte de l'œuvre dans une nouvelle dimension sonore. Magnifique.
Tolles Werk, fesselndes Spiel und fesselnder Klang, ich bin beim Video quasi "gegen meinen Willen" hängengeblieben. Bravo! Und tolle Idee mit der optischen Hörhilfe :)
This utterly MAGNIFICENT, Johannes - congratulations and thank you for such a fine interpretation, and kudos to Matthias for such a splendid instrument too! Could I please ask you to make a recording of Byrd's "The Battel" sequence on this harpsichord? That group of pieces, played by Christopher Hogwood on a Derek Adlam muselaar were the catalyst for my love affair with harpsichords when I was 13, some 31 years ago, and the passion has never diminished. Kindest greetings from Australia 🙂
What tuning system was used for this performance? It’s definitely not equal temperament because some of the intervals sound very pure and some of the others sound worse than equal temperament. It’s a great performance regardless.
I use some sort of meantone temperament, more or less based on fifths that are smaller than pure by a quarter of a syntonic comma. That leads to very consonant major and minor thirds compared to equal temperament. The fifths are more narrow than in equal temperament. Because the thirds are pure or very close to pure, the black keys can only be used as either sharps or flats, not both at the same time. I like this temperament a lot for this instrument and this music, it not only encourages a rich and dense feeling or resonance and harmony, but also supports the transparency of the polyphony.
It's some kind of meantone, probably close to 1/4-comma, with mild adaptations. I don't remember exactly, but the sharp keys are probably a bit lower than regular 1/4-comma-meantone.
It's called a gamut. It's the most commonly used musical notes represented on a table. When it came to reading notes/music, there was a series of 6 notes called a hexachord - since there are obviously more than just 6 notes, there were three hexachords (Starting on any F, C, and G (this piece only uses the ones that starts on F, and C) to cover the most common notes. This whole thing gives us the notes c d e f g a bb and h. If we want to have other pitches you use "musica ficta".

Unreal how this transports you into Sweelinck's world. A magical journey!
Nach so vielen Jahren immer noch phantastisch!!! Und was für ein Instrument! Bravo Johannes.

Wow! this music is so well played on a rolls-royce class harpsichord and played with such a sacred spirit to it. Hats off to Mr Keller
I can't stop listening to this glorious piece.
Brilliant, harpsichord playing!

Hi Andrew! I'm from Ruckerstown - Antwerpen, my mother was from Brugge and I think you voiced it perfectly!

I did not think I would enjoy a playing of this work on the harpsichord but the power is such that it is an excellent interpretation.
I love the gamut illustration-this would be useful for teaching undergraduate students.
The harpsichord at its grandest.
Magnificent playing! An amazingly expansive sound too.

Terrific playing. Terrific clarity.

Gorgeous. I know it doesn't need a coupler but I wish it had one.
Beautifully played!

The beauty of the meantone temperament!
What a wonderful tone. Then I looked at all the other comments on this.😀 It could have been the original.

6 people can’t sing “ut re mi fa sol la”
Excellent 😂
Because it is 110 cents down than nowdays pitch and not well tempered clavier ;)
we still use those notes here. we preserve our history unlike other countries that use the "more" modern version (A minor, C minor etc.)

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Danish composer circa 1630s?
Jan Pieterszoon, indeed, but a bit earlier: 1562-1621
He was Dutch (Netherlands), and spent his entire musical career Amsterdam.
Was wird für eine Stimmung verwendet? 1/4 komma mitteltönig?
