In the past, Thailand was called Siam. Siam ruled the Khmer people for over 400 years. The Khmers absorbed the culture from Siam until the Khmer Rouge genocide. Many Khmer people died. People with knowledge fled the country. All that was left were the workers and slaves. As for the older people The Khmer king had to send his children to study art and culture in Thailand. Because Khmer art and culture were lost to the Khmer Rouge genocide.

มันมีแค่รูปถ่ายราชวงศ์มันช่วงร.4ใส่ชุดแบบเรานี่แหละ อยู่ใต้อาณานิคมไทย ก่อนหน้านี้ไม่รู้มันใส่ยังไงกันเพราะไม่มีกล้อง มันเลยเอารูปพวกนั้นมาเคลม ไปหารูปตามกำแพงที่เป็นรูปฤาษีเอามาระบายสีทำลูกศรชี้ว่าเป็นสาวเขมรใส่สไบ ช่วงฝรั่งเศสปกครองมันใส่อีกแบบมันแกล้งลืม ชุดช่วงเขมรแดงก็อีกแบบมันทำเป็นจำไม่ได้ หลังหลุดพ้นเขมรแดงช่วง1980มันเริ่มจัดพิธีแบบไทย ใส่ชุดไทยจัดเต็มมากๆ มันก็เอารูปพวกนั้นมาเปลี่ยนพศ.ให้เก่าๆ มันเคลมมานานแล้ว ค่อยๆเคลมๆ มันบอกทุกอย่างของไทยเป็นของมันมาก่อนถึงเวลามันจะเอาคืน มันพูดกันแบบนี้หลายคน เพราะโรงเรียนมันสอนมา

The Siamese were more civilized than the Cambodians as rulers.
No ruler in the world would adopt the culture of the loser or Colonial country.
Look at the English and French. They conquered almost half of the world in the past. But they never embraced the culture of their colonized countries. In fact, they forced their colonial countries to implement their culture.
Culture often moves from country to country. A country (or region) that is considered more civilized goes to a less civilized country.

@@CeadReactsCambodia just referred from Angkor Wat's wall that they have craved the new preferred things from Thailand on the wall, Unesco should dissolve Angkor Wat from the world heritage. Cambodia had colonised by Siam(old name of Thailand) so their royal families had raised us by Siam and learned culture and art from Siam. The original Cambodia (Khmer) are forest dwellers whom were brought from other place for labour force to build Angkor Wat and they had no culture not even weaved their own clothes.

We Thais are just trying to protect and preserve what is rightfully ours. The national Thai dresses design by the Queen Mother has been handed down since Ayutthaya period. Cambodia had been a tributary state of Thailand for almost 500 years since Ayutthaya period, how could it be possible that these dresses belong to Cambodia?

To add some interesting facts. We are Thai people today. (or former Siamese) ruled that region (ancestors of the Cambodian people) for over 400 years until the French took away the Cambodians from us.
The Siamese were more civilized than the Cambodians as rulers.
No ruler in the world would adopt the culture of the loser or Colonial country.Look at the English and French. They conquered almost half of the world in the past. But they never embraced the culture of their colonized countries. In fact, they forced their colonial countries to implement their culture.
Culture often moves from country to country. A country (or region) that is considered more civilized goes to a less civilized country.

There was a Khmer empire and there was a Siam empire. Neighboring countries do share some cultures. However, many cultures have been developed by the intelligence of Thai people for hundreds of years to be identities of Thainess. For example, the shawl-like garment which worn in different styles by many countries such as India (Saree), Thailand (Sbai/Sabai), and Laos (Pha-beiyng). Cambodia has shawl-like garment too, but it’s different style from what Cambodian youths wear today which imitate the Thai styles.
Khom empire (not khmer empire)

No Khmer empire but Khom who took forest dwellers as Labour force ans slave from other area to build Angkor wat. Later the leader of dwellers killed the king of Khom and became the king but after Siam attacked them and became our colony for more than 500yrs. Khmer had no culture and no clothing, no knowledge to made their own clothes. From science evidence their DNA is nothing to do with and difference DNA in this region.(Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam)

Thai dress is not the traditional dress worn by cricketers to do housework. But it is the clothing of people in the Thai palace. Queen Sirikit has improved it to have a format that is convenient to use. and has been researched by knowledgeable people based on the traditions of Thailand Queen Sirikit gave it to her people to wear on important occasions with the intention of making it the Thai national costume. Thai people therefore love this costume very much. and ready to fight if other nations claim it as their own

I once show a picture of Khmer model wearing Thai dress nowadays (which claimed to be Cambodian national dress) from Pinterest to one of my Khmer friends and my mum’s friends whose also Khmer and they were completely shocked. They said that Khmer never worn anything like this back in the past. Then they showed me their pictures of the Khmer dress look like that they’re wearing which is the Sampot (the Cambodian National dress!)

The logic of some Cambodians are like if they live in this area before Thai people. Therefore every existing Thai cultures nowadays should be theirs. No matter it's just newly created or not which is fault claiming. However Si Thep empire in Thailand was newly registered as a world heritage and it's older than khmare confirmed by UNESCO.

Hello! I wanna provide some insight on this whole Thai-Khmer debate people still have, unfortunately from a person who is of Thai-Lao-Khmer descent.
Both Thailand & Cambodia have ruled each other countless of times. While most of the current disputes regard of clothes, buildings, & land, they’ll also argue about food, textiles, linguistics, and much more.
This is because for centuries (we’re talking like 9th-13th century drama), Thai people had displaced the native Austorasians (Mons/Khmers) & have had heavy Indian influences since Cambodia has many heavy Indian influences starting with merchants & Indian/Indian-Khmer rulers who came to Cambodia.
For example, if you look at traditional dancing, our hand signs are pretty much the same. We all do the growing plant, leaf, & flower. A lot of that was because of India.
Now in regards of wars, there have been many kingdoms formed within Thailand, Laos, & Cambodia. Many kingdoms have overlapped others & so territory disputes were very common. And since wars between various kingdoms (for Thailand: Sukhothai (the OG), Ayutthaya, Thonburi, Rattanakosin, & Taksin kingdoms. for Laos: Lan Xang, Luang Prabang, Vientiane, & Champasak kingdoms. and for Cambodia: Angkor & Khmer empires.) were having back to back, there have been people brought from other kingdoms (like war criminals or innocent villagers) forced to help rebuild the population & assimilate to either kingdom’s/country’s society.
In the 9th Century, The Khmer Empire was a huge power house. They managed to colonize parts of southern Isaan (Northeast) Thailand, the Eastern region, as well as parts of Laos. If you visit provinces like Surin or Buriram, you’ll find afew Khmer people still living there due to the Khmer Rouge. However, they reigned until the 13th century & their territories were swiftly taken by Thailand. That’s why you’re also seeing Thai people say Siam (old name for Thailand) ruled Cambodia for 400 something years & another reason why you’re seeing them say “Cambodian royals came to study in Thailand!” While yes, Khmer royal did come to Thailand (economic/environmental challenges, internal political instability, external invasions/military pressure, economic decline/demographic shifts, loss of trade routes/geopolitical shifts, & cultural reasons), Thai royals have also down the same.
Thai royals have come to Cambodia for many reasons like administration/governance, Buddhism/monastic traditions, art/architecture/culture, & diplomatic/political alliance.
However, even without the wars, it’s very important to keep in mind that Thailand, Laos, & Cambodia are heavily Indonized. In regards of Thai & Lao people, we’re basically Indofied diluted Chinese people. While our people came from Southern Yunnan, we moved south once the Han people were pushing us out. And when we ended up in modern SEA, we became Indianfied when we saw our neighbor Cambodia being Indofied, as well.
Now is that to say Thailand & Laos “basically” copied Cambodia? No. It was gonna happen either way. We’re bordering countries, so things like dances, foods, & architecture was bound to seep into our societies & affect our views/ways of life.
Another note to add, while Thailand is much more popular (understandable, I’d rather move there since my way of life is suitable for Thailand & because my family came from there), Cambodia is still a very serine, beautiful country with many surprises. I have many family members that still live there & when it comes down to it, I personally know more Khmer than Thai/Lao put together-despite reading Thai better 💀
Fun fact: Thailand’s current dress called “ชุดไทย” was invented in 1960 when queen Sirikit visited Europe & the US to have designer Pieree Balmain create an official dress represent Thailand as a whole, as well as other styles of Thai outfits.
