The national costume of Cambodia is called "Sampod" and not "Sabai". The reason why the former Cambodians had to wear the Sabai is because Cambodia was under the jurisdiction of Thailand for more than four hundred years. Thailand therefore forced Cambodians to wear sabai in order to bring royal tributes such as money trees, gold trees, and other valuables to present to the Thai king in the palace. And if a Cambodian wants to wear a Thai sabai in various important ceremonies, Cambodia must send a letter requesting permission to wear a sabai from Thailand before they can wear a sabai. But after Cambodia fell under the power of France, the Cambodian king and royal family no longer wore sabai. Later, Cambodia had to face many wars which resulted in the death of many talented people. And Cambodian people who survived the war do not have the potential to develop their country, culture, and clothing. Meanwhile, the Thai sabai dress has always been developed to be beautiful and diverse until the Thai sabai dress has become known and loved by people around the world. Cambodia wants their country to be liked by people around the world just like Thailand. Cambodia therefore chose to take the Thai sabai and pretend to be its own national costume. and accused Thailand of being a thief.

recording of foreigners who interacted with Siam (Thailand) during that period.

Kmer, now Cambodia, was under Siam (former Thailand) for 400 years. They have received Thai culture during the time. Angkor Wat was conformed by Khom, an ancestor (including Mon and Tai and Lao) of Siamese, from the central part of Thailand now since 10th century while that time, as a script in 10th century said, Kmer was only SLAVE. A Kmer called Taeng Wan (Sweet Melon in meaning) was the leader of slaves could rebel against Khom ruler (King Jayavarman IX) in 15th century. The rebel destroyed many many Siamese in Angkor and called this land SIAM REAP (destroyed Siam in meaning) until now. Siamese and Khom came back to home land to join Ayutthaya and striked back Kmer rebel in 17 years later. Since then Siam (now Thai) had ruled Kmer (now Cambodia) until 21st century when French Indo-China colony occurred.
Studying Khmer history It is a study that happens only to Khmer people. and will not reference information and accept information from other countries Cambodia is still proud of Angkor Wat. It is the first source of world civilization. Even Indians and Buddha were born from Cambodia.

Hey, you guys. The third party is here, and listen to me. Khmer Krom has never been ruled by the Thai people, not even for a moment. I scrolled through a lot of comments like "Thai ruled Khmer for 400 years or Khmer's King learned in BangKok and he brought all the cultures there to his country bla bla stuff like that ONLY Khmer Kandal (Cambodia now) and Khmer Surin (Thailand now) in that domanited period by Siam but Khmer Krom NEVER. I'm sure that everything in Khmer Krom, from ancient times to modern days, is still the same. Everything like architecture, costumes, food, holidays, spells, musical instruments, millennial pagodas,etc. During the Vietnam War with America, my dad told me that my grandfather gave him an amulet to hold in his mouth in order to protect him from bullets and bombs. When the Viet Cong occupied South Vietnam, many soldiers from the old regime were pursued by the Communists. My father told me that there was a man who almost got killed, but he ran into Khmer's pagoda and begged the monks to save his life. Then he was given an invisible amulet, and he miraculously escaped. I'm a mixed-race offspring (Khmer and Chinese). My maternal ancestors are Hokkien Chinese. Khmer Krom people have lived here for over a millennium; even Chinese people have just immigrated for over 200 years. I don't know clearly about Siam or Thai people, so I wouldn't say anything about them because I don't have deep knowledge about them. But do not say that Khmer people are not native or don't have any culture and have to adapt from somewhere else. Take your words back if you have no knowledge about other people. I'm sick of people who just get information from one side to prove the truth.
P/S: To Khmer people, you guys shouldn't say Thai coppied because you're not them and don't fully know about them. In ancient times, maybe we're the ones just like mythology, as old people said. It's like Chinese people on the mainland. There are many ethnicities, but the culture looks similar and slightly different. Even Viet Nam (Bách Việt, Yue people) and China (Hán, Han people) are really similar. Moreover, Pakistan and India, Malaysia and Indonesia, Arab areas, etc. But if anybody says Khmer coppied, let my story prove it to them.
