LUKE THOMAS: ESPN+ Is THE WORST Streaming Service in SPORTS

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 16 พ.ค. 2024
- Luke Thomas: After YEARS of frustration TRYING to watch UFC and boxing events on ESPN+ as a customer, I've had enough. UFC 301 was not only completely inaccessible, but so might any future pay-per-view event if ESPN doesn't do something to fix a service that balance sheets, consumer surveys and a mountain of anecdotal evidence shows is completely BROKEN.

Funny how bootleg web sites have better software than Espn. Its literally 2 clicks to watch anything.
Crackstreams crashes and the chat is super racist but it really does work WAY BETTER then espn+
Have not paid for a UFC pay per view since 2004
Yeah piracy is a service problem not a money problem. People who pirate in the first place the ufc will never have those customers but their bad ppv service drives their paying customers to use piracy because it provides a better viewing experience than the legitimate one.
Actually it's 3 clicks, play, back, play😊
Which site? Not as easy as it used to be
Please, bring back "Luke Thomas is Pissed"
ESPN+ is terrible. It's not yellow-mustar-level terrible, but it's up there
They ain’t ready for that lol
Preach, we love directed Luke rants.
LTIP was everything the internet was created for!!
@@tgwnn Yellow mustard at least has a place on a ballpark or street vendor hotdog if that's all they have. What I'm trying to say is that yellow mustard, despite being yellow viscous vinegar still has a use. ESPN+ however is just useless dogshit any way you slice it.
I unsubscribed from ESPN+ last week and my viewing experience has actually improved
Started initially at $4.99 a month, now it’s up to $10.99 a month 🤡
Yeah the final straw for me was when I was in a stream chat but watching espn+ for the prelims, and I had commercials when they didn't.
I unsubscribed but I'm back on it. ESPN+ really sucks but at least I can watch fights at leisure. I had "fight pass" but it went up to $15. They're crazy.
I’m about too. It’s getting worse, and they keep going up in price 🙄
@@PoyTroy You're about too? Your high school called wanting your diploma back!
I hate that ESPN plus app. Buffering. Lagging. Always issues rewinding and fast forwarding.
Mine does it when the main event starts
Being 100% honest here.. I’ve never been able to watch a single event from start to finish using ESPN+ without one of two things happening.. 1) stream will load, be fine for maybe five minutes, then buffer and change to the lowest viewing quality imaginable until I close and restart it then will just repeat the cycle.. 2) it just won’t work at all and will give me the spinning loading wheel on a black screen until I give up..
Yup it’s so bad, it makes you not wanna pay them for it.
Also, the same ad running FOR ESPN+ on espn+ is so annoying
Here I was, thinking I was the only one
Yup, I was gonna write something similar, but you summed it up nicely. I'm legit shocked these issues are still going on. I canceled my subscription years ago.
God forbid you fast forward 10 seconds
I know for a fact that ESPN+ is a CRAZY system resource Hog. Sounds like your computer can't handle it. It crashes for me all the time and i get a message from my browser saying it crashed because of too much load on system resources. I have a m2 pro Macbook pro 16gb for refence. I can edit 4k videos but can't run espn+ without it crashing
Have YOU ever had an issue with that pile of crap ESPN+? Let us know in the comments below
Well, Luke, Thank god it's not available outside North America.
Yeah I've had my fair share of issues. Your issue sounds simple. You just have to sign out then sign back in
Dazn is the worst by far
Many different issues on many occasions. They stuck for sure
The application crashes on my IOS devices constantly. A stark contrast to Disney+. Almost a tale of two cities.
ESPN: Complains about pirating
Also ESPN: Makes it impossible to watch PPVs legally
Paid for PPV. Wouldn't even let me watch, says I need to "purchase" click on purchase. "You've already purchased". Just went to bed at that point.
Pay $80 for a PPV and feed freezes or comes in very low quality. Extremely slow to load. Forced to pay for a service I don't even want to then pay for a PPV.
I've switched to listening to live "Play by Play" coverage of the fights. Because it's free, and some of these TH-cam productions are more fun than an actual UFC event. MMA Holes channel has the best live fight coverage, and their product is more polished and better looking than the UFC product. T-Bone MMA channel, is also better than the UFC product. T-Bone is a military man, and he does outstanding fight coverage. It's difficult to pay $80 when these channels have such a good production. I don't care if I miss the actual fight, because Anik and Rogan are not particularly fun to listen to.
This was my experience as well when I purchased UFC300 and added ESPN + for the 1st time. Why would someone pay so much money for the quality of a pirated stream?
Why do you Americans continue paying for ppv events if the stream never works? 😂😂😂
I no longer buy them I go to the local movie theater and I pay about 30 dollars
Request a refund. You’ll get it.
This must have been a very cathartic video to make.
Those fucking commercials! Let us watch the corner and walk outs for christ sakes. The corner adds a tone to the experience for me. I can't believe more ppl don't talk about this. ESPN + is ruining the UFC for me.
Jesus Christ loves you so much and died for your sins💙❤
Ontop of that, it's the same 2 commercials on repeat throughout the entire event. Uggggggggggh.
Wait, what? There's commercials on ESPN+ PPV? Ermahgawd LMFAO. Thats why I now watch oneFC and Rizin instead of UFC.
Any ppv should be ad free, we already paid for crying out loud.
It's always the same disney+ commercial
Luke - you aren’t alone. ESPN platform is the worst of the bunch
My one issue with ESPN+ is it tellint me my password is wrong CONSTANTLY if i sign in anywhere other than my phone. Its literally only ever been the same password since the beginning but apparently my account doesnt exist half the time
I have that issue too and it's annoying as hell. That's actually the only issue I have with the service. I don't get the buffering and quality drops that others are experiencing.
And logging me out constantly on my PS5
So annoying when im running late to the start of a fight just to be forced to log back in again
That little bit of extra time can make you miss a knockout
Luke Thomas is pissed!
A return to form!
Perhaps the old series could return as a monthly segment in the live chat, Luke?
It's the most glitchy streaming service I've ever used. I've tried having watch parties on several different occasions only for streaming problems to wreck the whole event.
it sucks. For Conor vs Dustin two I paid for a full year of ESPN plus to get the discount only for it to disappear after buying it. So a full year of ESPN plus and I still had to pay full price for the ppv. Bullshit
The got me with the discount a few years ago because I didn’t read everything. It’s “new customers only”, and that doesn’t mean you just don’t currently have a subscription. It means even if you had one 2 years ago and cancelled it you still aren’t getting a new subscriber deal. Not sure if that’s what happened to you or not, but I got hit with that.
Damn. Luke is never working in an ESPN program.
Eh, that was never gonna happen regardless. Luke isn’t exactly the “corporate” type in the sense of what ESPN would be looking for, a la Brett Okamoto & Marc Raimondi
He checks the leftist/ progressive box at least
@@drag0.. Luke has some out there political opinions, but I definitely wouldn't call him a leftist, lol
@@milkweedreflections If you talk to Europeans they will tell you that there is no leftist political party or movement in North America.
@@drag0.. Thats the irony of it really, in progressive circles his opinions would be considered Centre left at best. Its just in the MMA space he is considered Stalin adjacent.
Absolute dumpster fire. Constant force crashing. It has the function to pause, rewind, FF but you can’t actually use them or it will crash. Also, very frequent dips in clarity/definition. That all said before mentioning the PPV nightmare.
The sooner they move to Netflix the better. The PPV model is old and should be reserved for public places such as bars who profit from this. It's only North America keeping this going and that's only because they've had it for so long they've just become used to it.
The whole model is the TV companies too not the promotions or events that are on the network.
The sooner it goes the better because it causes too many problems (look at the UK card having their event at 3 am) and it also rinses their customers when 1. They don't need to do that and 2. They can make way more money from advertisers and sponsors who will pay to be on their platform (and more money with more eyes too).
Can't wait for the other sporting events to follow the Jake Paul and WWE move that are starting this (and watch the massive amount of views Paul Vs Tyson gets, it'll be the biggest and most successful live event for sure as everyone will watch, which is great for advertisers).
Traditional TV and more importantly the PPV model is dated, it's old and is slowly phasing out (which might be why they don't care as much).
The commercials! Its the same 3 commercials for like 3-4 hours.
I love how one of the topics is simply: "what the hell?"
I dumped it. It became a triple paywall. Cable, requiring ESPN+, to buy Pay Per view. If it isn’t
on cable on ESPN alone I’m not watching.
Yeah that pissed me off too, because I got rid of xfinity cable. But now they “let” you give them money as long as you have WiFi service through one of the providers. I kept xfinity WiFi so I’ve been able to give them money for shitty services.
Thanks for the reply Luke !! love MK !!
It baffles me how Disney owns 3 different streaming services, and each works differently and has its own quirks. It seems like having one framework would help.
disney+ is still wonky. they are still working on the interface. apart from netflix, even prime and max are shoddy and stucky
I ordered ufc 300 and had a couple friends come over to watch it and they took my money but the event never played.. I was beyond pissed cause it was ufc 300.. it disgusted me to the point I will not buy anymore ppvs..
Did u get any PPV before 300
@population-_-420 yes. I used to order 6 - 8 ppvs a year.. I only watch the prelims now and catch up on the main card through media now.. I will never order another ufc ppv for 80 bucks when it's not guaranteed to play.. shit even when it does play it goes blurry every couple minutes and gets lacky..
Streameast is your friend
Duude - loved this SCATHING indictment 🤣🤣 also loved the “NOTHIIING” edits 🤣 Would happily watch more “y’know what else is really grinding my gears?” videos. 🙏🔥
Last Saturday it crashed and every fight looked like a potato, then 7pm est it logged me out, then told me in needed to pay my monthly subscription... which i paid last week... yeah I'm done with espn (this happens nearly every week)
I canceled my espn+ subscription well over a year ago for literally ALL of the issues Luke mentioned here. Quite possibly the worst, clunkiest service on the market. Disney just doesn’t give af unfortunately. Now, I’m a lawless 🏴☠️.
ESPN+ can't seem to achieve basic 1080p streaming...
I canceled about 3 months ago due to it being a crappy platform
Hilariously, the Verizon rep I spoke to was more helpful than the ESPN+ rep. Almost as if he had been bombarded with these types of questions and actually learned vs. ESPN+ who seemed to know nothing.
Edit; I got free ESPN+ through some package deal.
I have had endless issues with ESPN+. They are frequently missing fights or sections of the card, and sometimes they will only be available in Spanish. Buying a PPV means long, repeated cycles of logging out and back in when attempting to actually watch the PPV and being prompted to buy the already purchased PPV. The video player is the worst I've ever seen, you can't skip around smoothly or even control the cursor accurately. It's unfathomable how bad it is, and how long this has been going on.
I always find it funny how on a random saturday when theres no college football NBA or NHL ESPN will still choose to put some random cornhole championships on the main satellite channel and the UFC on ESPN +
Every time I use it I have an issue. On top of that they raise the price of subscription every year, and they plan on raising it again this Year. It's not worth the price
I've tried to buy UFC ppv's for about the past 9 months my card won't process, the funds are there, I've used three of cards, none worked, my wifes card, no go, my mother even let me use hers and it still wouldn't process. I've missed retirements, BMF fights, welter and lightweight (my favorite weight classes) title fights that I absolutely NEEDED to see, and nope, never once will my card process and I end up watching the fights later for free. I may not be much of a $ amount, but you'd think 11 years of loyalty to the sport would matter just a little bit. It blows me away to know I won't get to see Poirier vs Makhachev, I've followed Poirier since his 55 second KO that got him into the UFC. F**king HATE ESPN
Absolutely 100% agree!! Every commercial break the stream stops! I have to open the app again, start watching the stream, repeat this process for the entire broadcast. So damn frustrating
For YEARS my son has watched or listened to me cuss at my tv! THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THIS!!!!!
LT is PISSED!!!! oh man , so many memories
Plot twist, ESPN+ honchos are gonna blame their issues on illegal piracy affecting their own service stream......lol
It makes me so happy to imagine luke thomas troubleshooting espn+
I agree, its literally so bad. Buffering all the time on gigabit, black screens, stream dying and killing the entire page. God awful and they keep sending emails they are bumping the prices lol
100% Agree with you! I canceled espn+ when the monthly fee went over $10.00 . When they raised price for PPV to $80.00 I quit watching UFC.
Recommending the phone as an alternative is crazy 😂
Haha ya, me and my 5 buddies that came over to watch the PPV will just huddle around my iPhone to watch the event
Not just ESPN+, UFC fight pass is complete trash too
still 30fps? lmao
Thank you for making this, I don’t think there’s a single time of using this app on any device where I haven’t run into some sort of issue. Poor video quality, lags, freezing, difficult navigation, tv live feed is always somehow 20 second behind the phone live feed. God I hope they fix it but doubt it
Just trying to watch Fight Nights on ESPN+ is a complete nightmare. Just finding the right link of the fight your looking for is really challenging.
Then when you click on the link it resolves to a video player error about 90% of the time. I have to constantly try new links and refresh the page just to get it to resolve and show and/or play the video.
Weird... I've never had a problem with ESPN+
This is what we needed, Luke off the fruitless fighter pay crusade, and onto the all-my-homies-hate-ESPN+ crusade. Trash service that I'm held hostage by.
The very first day I got an ESPN+ subscription-I tried to watch Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, the Audio & Video were so out of sync that it was unwatchable.
I told support multiple times.
I regularly check to see if they finally fixed it.
It’s been almost 6 years…
And it’s still out of sync.
Once I was watching a UFC and went into commercials “the Blue loading screen” and it was stuck we realized that we had missed a KO my party went wild the boo’s came raining down.! That’s one of the memorable moments of ESPN+ not working.
he's Apparently never used DAZN app.. 😂
Bro it’s damn near impossible to cancel a dazn subscription. That shit should be illegal!
I've used both extensively and espn+ is far worse.
Holdup…..shhhh…..let him cook
I can have my device directly plugged into my Wi-Fi router and it still plays at the lowest available quality. My experience with PPV has been fine but trying to watch the fight nights end with me not finishing them because I’m tired of looking at 360p quality video for 95% of the event. Funny how the ads all play perfectly though.
My brother and I both paid $80 for UFC 301 and weren’t able to watch. Being told to pull up the event in my mobile device while hosting a viewing party was adding insult to injury
Ive never had it be as bad as it was for luke. They always fix it remotely when i call them
The fact that you've had to call them at all, let alone more than once is an issue. When you pay $89 for a streaming service it should work on its own, with out having to call them multiple times.
@@lukew101 100%
Sue them for fraudulently charging you and force their bumb azzes to show up in small claims court. You could represent yourself.
I THINK ESPN has a little bit more of a legal budget than a private citizen. Hilarious comment though
@@sagetmaster4 they might ignore it lolol and luke wins!!!!
I've bought PPVs through ESPN+ several times. On each occasion there was some form of difficulty, whether it was intermittent freezing, drops to low quality, or outright inability to watch on a desktop computer.
Thank you for Making this Video 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏….
Something Needs To Be Done.
ESPN+ Stinks and we all are tired of wasting our hard earned money on Events that don’t even stream without issues.
I paid for ESPN+, but it never even worked for me. Also... I REFUSE to buy PPVs at these rates. I had watched every UFC event live, since UFC #3!!!!!! ...until the prices went up. Can't afford it anymore.
This makes me so so happy that when UFC went on to ESPN+, I simply bowed out. I had no interest in paying for an extra service just so I could pay for a pay-per-view. Since then, I've watched virtually no UFC, which sucks, but there's MMA elsewhere. If I had swallowed my distaste and signed up, this kind of thing would have pushed me over the edge.
After wasting almost $100 on a single event that never loaded or worked after hours of troubleshooting, never again.
As a 4 year ESPN+ sub I definitely agree with Luke on everything. Using an Apple TV or an Ipad to watch events it will continuously log me out on both. This happens weekly and sometimes daily. Another issue is sometimes it will not work while signed in despite other espn+ programs working. Another issue is sometimes fights won't show up. Early prelims have been hard to find, while more rare it still has happened multiple times. Would cancel if it wasn't part of a package. Makes me feel less guilty for streaming ppv's because it's unacceptable to pay extra for this horrible service.
Events not loading, constant buffering during live events, denied access to PPVs that I've bought..... I cancelled my subscription
In 2022, I bought a PPV and it wouldn’t load. It just kept taking me back to the page to rebuy it. After 1 hour of low English speaking help, they refunded my money 14 business day later and was told to make a new account. Woooohooo
8:24 “it says a lot about a company’s priorities when the technology to process financial transactions works flawlessly, but the product driving those transactions doesn’t “. Hot…. Damn!
It ALWAYS has Issues when I use it, try watching a soccer game & not knowing which team is which, when using for UFC it’s even worse, scanning through for fights then having the fight pause & BLURR UP, the worse!
Agree 100%. I have had several issues with not being able to watch or interrupted service during pay per views. I stopped buying UFC events because of the missed events and wasted time on the phone waiting on hold.
-When traveling internationally the app doesn't even open/exist.
When watching tape for next card, consistently asks me to sign up then log in then it doesn't work.
Search feature can not find fights.
Does not work with many DWCS fights.
Same issue here trying to find DWCS fights, it's the absolute worst when it comes to finding recently uploaded content. they don't even specify the date of the upload i get 20min into an episode and realize it's one season old. Then i find the DWCS episode that is most recent and the audio is playing in spanish. they could very easily make spanish a track select on a single upload. but they make multiple versions of the same episode to make things more confusing. it's a cluster fuck and usability is the least of their concern.
During UFC fight nights it constantly tells me that I need to subscribe to watch and when I go to look at my account it says I'm already subscribed. This cycle continues until it eventually works and recognizes that I do in fact pay for a subscription.
ESPN+ also won’t know what’s live? It’ll say it’s currently live but if you back out and replay (which takes forever) it will go like 30 minutes in the future to the real live showing
Thank you for making this video Luke. I agree with your entire video. It’s baffling that a company with this type of valuation can’t put together a functional app.
I use to get every UFC, but refuse to pay for ESPN+ and then a PPV, horrible!!!
As a software engineer that’s been in the industry for 15 years, I can tell you this is 100% a deliberate choice. Streaming is complicated but it’s not rocket science, if they cared enough to fix these problems they would have been fixed by now.
I legitimately used to order every ppv. When I would order the espn+ ppv I found the stream laggy. I haven’t ordered a ppv in years
I remember on McGregor vs Poirier 2 when I bought the PPV to stream to my friends on discord and the PPV never loaded on my computer so I had to watch alone on my phone instead of streaming it to all my friends. Never bought a PPV since then.
I cancelled ESPN+. Hell, I couldn’t even watch fight night cards on it.
Luke I literally cancelled that shit after 2 years. Actually tried to buy Poirier Mcgregor 2 and couldn't. Not to mention it fucking lags constantly, will sometimes jump around from a live fight to a earlier prelim with no reason. ESPN + has sucked for years. Baffling.
Since having ESPN plus I have had issues, Lately it’s the issue with the broadcast selection menu, sometimes no matter what I do the little “choose your broadcast” won’t show up and I just have to wait and keep trying till it works.
The issue has gone away for me but I still here people having it which is that in the middle of the stream the video will just stop and give you a play button with a line through indicating the stream needs to restart.
There’s also no stream quality options and it feels like most of the time the quality is just not what it should be for this sport.
I was so excited for UFC 300. My buddies from college came over and we ordered the PPV. We all hadn't watched a fight together since UFC 150.
First, I couldn't get the prelims to play. Then, they suddenly worked. Then, during main card the app said I didn't pay for the fight (we had been watching it for an hour!), and I had to reboot the Roku. THEN in the MAIN EVENT the fucking app shut down again, and we missed the end of the fight.
It was a similar experience to pirating.
I paid 9.99 + 59.99 just for this one night, and it was bullshit. My third bad experience with it and I will never use it again.
I also prefer to pay for payperviews. But man, so many times I’m watching the fights and it just backs out to the main menu. And THEN, several times it wouldn’t let me back into it. I started going to my local theater in town that shows them out of fear the ppv is not going to work, and I’m going to have to find a crappy 240p stream somewhere that gets taken down every 20 minutes. No! I never worried about this before ESPN+. I didnt even watch this last ppv. Wasn’t worth it to deal with all the inconveniences.
I tried to watch UFC 270 with some family/friends over, purchased it on the website with my ESPN+ account and tried to watch it via HDMI on that same device. It said I had not purchased but then said I had purchased it when I tried to look at my account/purchase again. Feeling stressed that I was hosting fights that nobody could watch, I then purchased on the App Store on my phone to see if that would work. That didn’t either. So we had to find other ways and I have not and will not purchase any more PPVs. Neither Apple or ESPN gave me a refund and I used a debit card so I was just SOL. Horrid service, I have it because it’s bundled with my phone plan and I make it a point not to use it.
Cutting the walkouts off to the same espn screen saving commercial over and over! Horrible !! I feel you Luke!
Crashes a lot, can be hard to find what you want to watch, logs you out for no reason constantly, ads are awful and repetitive
I had the same issue with ufc 301. I ended up having to watch it on my phone because it wouldnt play on my computer. Scared me from ordering another ppv. Ive always payed. Ive had some issues but 301 was an unforgivable experience.
I had trouble streaming it to my tv from my phone through a chromecast. I paid ESPN+ yearly at the beginning of the year but wont be renewing.
This reminds me of when I go to a rave and there is too long line to the whippets. Just leaving money on the table smh
I had the same exact issue with the ppv on 301. It eventually just went through about an hour in
Great video. It freezes on me so often when I rewind or fast forward.
HORRIBLE!!!! ILL NEVER USE IT AGAIN
50% of the time ESPN+ tells me I don’t have a subscription to the service when I try to start a UFC stream even though I can then immediately back out and go to my account/verify that I DO have an active subscription…
I once missed the entire PPV I bought and ESPN+ tells me they don't care and don't reimburse.
I exactly had the same issues that you did that evening. I switched from the boxing on my laptop/ufc on my TV to boxing on my tv/ufc on my laptop. Boxing transition was flawless. UFC on my laptop took me logging out, rebooting, and doing 20 minutes of troubleshooting until it finally stopped asking me to buy again the UFC PPV that I already paid for. I laughed my *so off the next morning when I realized that you had the same frustration with a few more explosives. I always have hated how much ESPN+ is like a product that feels attached to ESPN by school glue and duct tape from the provision, navigation, and product. Thanks for expressing what some of us have felt for awhile.
It doesn't pick up where I left off when I log back in to watch a show or sport. Nothing is in 4K and it's 2024.
Pausing during a stream is a nightmare. The lag and picture distortion upon restart is terrible. And that is on TV!
ibe also had the experience if sitting on hold for over an hour for customer service and then instantly being hung up on when someone pucked up the line. i then waited iver an hour again and their only suggestion was uninstall and reinstall the app, which did nothing.
Everytime I buy a PPV I have to log in and then log out several times before it works. There was a period where every commercial break it timed out and had to be refreshed. They play the same few commercials during every commercial break which over a 5 hr card is maddening.
I was a TSN subscriber which is the Canadian branch of ESPN. From loss of signal, to blackout games on Canadian games, not covering certain events but I finally had enough when I couldn't view a Fight Night when I pay $200 for the yearly subscription and they put it on TSN 5 which wasn't in my TSN package. SCREW that company.
Yeah I didn’t watch any fights for like 2 years because I was fed up with ESPN+ I ended up with a new TV, and the TV app is okay compared to using a laptop and hdmi cable.
Agreed. It is the worst performing streaming service we subscribe to. Almost every time I try to watch, I need to sign back in and it’s a major pain.
And for a service designed to watch live sports, they should have a much better replay button. If I try to rewind to rewatch something, it jumps back like 29 mins not 10 seconds
I’ve never been able to watch Topuria vs Volk because it never loads. I watched it on TH-cam instead. This happens with many other fights.
I have always bought the PPV on my phone and then watched it on my tv without issues. There have been periods where the picture quality goes down and then comes back within a minute or so. I personally believe that UFC might be going somewhere else for their next deal. Netflix or Amazon signing UFC would be a big boom to their fledgling live broadcasts
the only time i watch espn+ is
1. PPV event which 99% of the time ive never had an issue
2. la liga games which EVERYTIME there is an issue, laggy, buggy et etc
