FreeCAD: Custom section views in TechDraw workbench by slicing bodies Learn Technical Drawing

  • Creating custom section views in your technical drawings by using the part design and part workbench together to slice sections out of your bodies in quarters for the half section view, in a step pattern for the offset section view and in a jagged pattern for a broken section view. Learn how the part design and the part workbench can be used together to upgrade your part design body which is a feature based object made from sketches, pads, pockets etc to a part workbench body where normally you would create bodies out of primitive objects such as cubes, spheres etc. From here we learn how to create a compound (grouped object) from your part and slice this in various ways. We learn how to add and compose these to our technical drawing via the techdraw workbench.

    That is a very helpful tutorial.
    I also wanted know about how can we insert the break view of a very long object in techdraw. There was a button named broken view in previous version of freecad but I can't find that in current version of 0.21

    Complex section view tool is now available in FreeCAD (you can test it using weekly builds). It allows users to define section profiles based on sketches or Draft objects. It has some limitations (the approach shown here may still be required for some types of sections) but that’s a huge improvement for TechDraw.

      How, where? Please...

      To clarify: the new complex section tool can create half, offset and aligned sections. Unfortunately, it won't help you with broken-out and rotated/removed sections. That still requires the workarounds like in this video. The new complex section tool is already available in the 0.21 dev version (weekly builds) but will soon be part of stable 0.21 release.

    Howcome you could do the pad without removing the degrees of freedom of the cutting shape cca in 12:12?

    Hi there, hope all is well. When I converted a part to compound and then used the cube/slice apart method, it produced only one slice rather than the exploded slice shown in your video. Any thoughts as to why that would happen? My original part did utilize a polar pattern to create 64x 1mm holes around the circumference of a cylinder, and I have a suspicion it is causing multiple problems when using the techdraw features (as well as other features). Many thanks!

    Tq for the video, but may I know how to add the section view lines in freecad 0.20.1?

    Very good tutorial. Maybe a silly question... How do we add hatches to the tech draw views created with this method?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment. No question is silly, it's only easy when you know how 😁. In tech draw there is a button on the toolbar that looks like a tetris piece. A 'L' shaped icon. I believe it's also on the techdraw menu, hatch a face with an image.

    Awesome workaround! Is it possible to create aligned sections this way? What I mean is a section view like the one shown in the middle picture but with cutting lines at an angle larger than 90. For example to show some holes or ribs positioned around the revolved part.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed. Yes you can. I would create a sketch with a poly line that would be the dividing line. You can then use this extruded to split the object in the way you want.

      I'll just add that the new complex section tool available in FreeCAD 0.21 can create such aligned sections automatically.

    cool! but :/ What about the hatch pattern? Is it posible?

  • @JW0149

    Interesting video but needs further explanation. Why use "compound" body not just a body? The "compound" body is in fact just the one entity you made so why the need for it? Maybe it is "that's just the way" but confusing. Thanks for your time.
