Hi Ian. I followed your advice with 50% water changed and add the beneficial bacteria plus Prim water condition. Yesterday. Today for my pleasant surprise Nitrite is 0 and nitrate 5.00 ppm . I suppose I will keep texting the water for the next few days to make sure no reverse nitrite then can add few more small fish?
Thanks for all your great advices.

I have a question: why does everyone call it the nitrogen cycle when nitrogen is being left out of the explanation?

Just getting started. Bought a house 8 years ago with a 350L tank embedded in the man cave bar . Ignored it for 8 years but now got the bug. Set it up last weekend with filter, lighting, heater, aeration and substrate. Week in and desperate to add fish but watching your videos I’ll be patient for at least another week as added some bacteria kick start from week 1 so hoping 2 weeks will do it. Love your content.

You shared the bit of information about tank cycling that I was most confused about. I was confused about tank cycling and how an 80% water change wouldn’t cause you to restart the tank cycle…
It is because the helpful bacteria doesn’t live in the water column!! Everything has clicked for me now. Thank you!

This is the first video that made sense for me. I have 2 beautiful Goldfish and thought I had cycled my tank before getting them but realize i didn't do it correctly. So now I have a tank with my goldfish in it that isn't cycled after 4 months and now having ammonia issues. I know now what I'm doing wrong. I'm too clean! lol I have over cleaned my filters and decorations. Realizing now to leave those alone. I'm currently doing the water change, adding the stability etc and leaving my media alone. I hope my goldfish are strong and will survive my rookie status because I love them so much. I will continue educating myself with your videos. Thank you for keeping things simple and understandable. ❤️

Hey KaveMan, thanks bud! I'm an experienced aquarium hobbyist and I searched the web for over an hour looking for the best explanation of the nitrogen cycle I could find for a beginner acquaintance of mine to get him properly introduced to the concept of the nitrogen cycle and why it is so important. He recently opened a badly needed bait shop here in town but has had some problems keeping the minnows healthy. I looked at his set up a few weeks ago and the problem was obvious... highly inadequate biological, as well as mechanical filtration, hence high ammonia levels. The water was even a little cloudy. From my hobbyist point of view, I saw the problem immediately. I asked him about his water change schedule... it was 100% once a week. Ugh! After a short discussion about it, I offered to guide him in building a dual 55g barrel filtration system and plumb it through his 5 bait tanks totalling about 600g of water. But first, he needs to understand how and why it works... and how and why it can fail. I wanted to find a very clear but straight forward explanation that wasn't a childish cartoon and your video is perfect! Keep up the good work and thanks again, you just made my job a little easier!

I saw that 10 common mistake video, and I thought that it was really good; I've been making my living for the past 35 or so years, and that video covered almost EXACTLY what I always try to get across to anyone that I am trying to either do it themselves or to have me service it for them. I actually was able to predict each issue that you spoke about before you actually said it! And almost in the exact same order that I tell people about. It covered even a few issues that I still hadn't learned until I had already been doing it for 10-15 years! Now it's been a good 35+ years, and I'm still always open to learning more. But, yes, it's all about providing the proper conditions essential to the given species' actual needs. And of course the things in OUR/YOUR immediate environment that will affect the conditions in the tank! An excellent video, and I would even recommend that newcomers watch and learn from... Please get in touch with me; we might be able to do each other some kind of good things.... I have some references if you want; I've got a couple of clients that I've had for over 30 years...

This is the best way I've had the Nitrogen cycle explained! I've only sort of understood it until now. Thank you for all of your videos they are amazing for us beginners and make me feel like less of a beginner!
Just a question - if I add Stability to the tank for 7 days as per the bottle, do i then need to add fish to keep ammonia levels correct for the bacteria that's in the tank? Would the beneficial bacteria die off if I don't add fish at this time, or right after it?

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Your thought process is correct. Your tank needs and ammonia source for the Stability to work correctly. You could ghost feed the tank which will create ammonia or you could add 1 or 2 small fish to get it started. Either way will work. 😊

I don’t know where all the emphasis came into play on cycling fresh water aquariums. POINT BLANK , stores are selling chemicals. I have had some form of fish tank or 1000s of gallons of tanks since 1984, and spent 7 years working professionally in a store that was almost exclusively a cichlid store. Your staple cichlids Mbuna, South Americans , Central Americans are almost unaffected during a fresh water cycle, in fact the more you add the faster the tank cycles. I do agree with most of what’s this bus says and he has the passion for the fish and I love to see that, and he is correct in the declorinators , I recommend API Stress Syme (If they still make it) API Stress Coat ( has saved more fish than I can count) Api Quick Start is ok , I never saw a big benefit to it.
What you do need to do is get a good filter (marineland emperor 400 bio-wheel) or similar
You do need the proper substrate for the type of cichlids ie…. Pea gravel , bag gravel, rocks for Central/South American ,
crushed coral for African Malawi , Victoria, and Tanganyikans.
With exceptions, No you can’t fresh cycle a tank with Discus or Angelfish or any more brittle cichild species.
    So my checklist
    1. Know you pr PH at the tap (unless Ro/Di is used) know your species requirements ( get a good ph test kit Salafort, or Rea Sea, API test kits are inaccurate garbage)
    2. Get your tank up to desired heat, gets good submersible heater
    3. Pick the right substrate for the fish you desire (caribe sea does sell precycled wet substrate that is really good , but really expensive and not needed)
    4. Float your new fish in new tank for 30 minutes ( this is the only time i will tell you this, use fish tank water in bag from pet store to help bacteria start) after that introduction of store bacteria , you need to stay away from store bacteria it can be problematic and in some cases catastrophic.

I agree with almost everything this video says; great job on that 😎👍
However, if you add beneficial bacteria in a tank with no fish (nothing that is actively producing waste), won't the beneficial bacteria die because there is nothing in the tank that is producing ammonia?
**even the Quick Start. It is beneficial bacteria, but won't they die if there are no fish producing waste...

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  ปีที่แล้ว

That is correct! This is why when using bacteria in bottle products, they work best when there's already fish in the tank producing ammonia for the bacteria to eat. 😁

Kev... I love how you explain everything in such an easy to understand way.
You stressed about de-chlorising the tapwater you put in the tank.
To all fresh aquamen and aquawomen all around the world... Different countries use different ways to filter and clean their water that you'll get from the tap.
There are several tools available to check the chemical compounds in the water.
Because I'm Dutch, I know that the water from the tap in The Netherlands is by itself usable in an aquarium, without the need to de-chlorise it. However depending on the area, it may have fluctuating Ph levels.
I do not know about other countries!
So if you are in the USA, you may want to follow Kev's instructions to the letter... but for other countries, you may have to do some research on your local tapwater.

Hi, I have been watching your videos. We are very new to African cichlids. I love your videos because you explain things in a way we all can understand. Even more important you show us how to do things very throughly. About a year ago we lived in Delaware. We had a discus tank. We live in Florida now and have really fallen in love with African Cichlids. We will be getting our 120 gal aquarium in a few weeks. Very excited!
Watching your videos has taught us a lot we didn’t know or do. Thanks for doing the videos and for all of your help. You are appreciated.

Thank you. I think I know what I did wrong. My turtle tank water had perfect numbers, but I let it go for a few weeks and then did a total cleaning, including the rocks on the bottom. Now, the pH is too low and the nitrates are way too high. I will keep changing the water until it is fixed. You explained that perfect. It makes total sense now. Thank you again.

Just set up a fresh water tank (a humble 29 gallon one) and this video was sooo helpful. Hi. I'm new to ur channel and I must say that out of all the videos I've watched explaining the nitrogen cycle this is the one I understand the best. So simple and to the point. And I too was of the misconception that the bacteria were in the water-as I've heard many times- so I'd be afraid to do too huge water changes. I owned a fish tank and it failed many times but I'm trying to start again cause I love it. So watching ur and loving ur videos.

I listen to your video and I do have to say this is the first time I heard it the way you said it so that I could understand what was being said! Now my question is? I have one betta in each tank I have six of them.. I just purchased a new heater in 25 w and it's still not warming up my tank the water is still cool! Why isn't the water warming up?
    2nd question ❓
I never knew about the cycles in the way that you explained it!
I never knew anything about that? And yes I would wait about 2 to 3 days and then I would buy a new fish and put it in their tank.
They often lived but sometimes they died..
So probably I introduced them to the tank too early.
    3rd question ❓
And I actually never really took half of the water out I usually would take all of the water out and start all over again!
So now I need your help in knowing what to do in starting up a betta tank!
    What TO DO?
    OR NOT TO DO?
IS IT THE SAME WAY THAT YOU EXPLAINED ABOUT THE OTHER FISH?
PLEASE HELP, I THOUGHT I KNEW ABOUT MY BETTA FISH
BUT SINCE I'VE LISTENED TO YOU...I'M ACTUALLY DOING IT ALL WRONG!
    4th QUESTION ❓
WHAT KIND OF WATER SHOULD I BE PUTTING IN THE BETTA TANK?
IS THERE A DIFFERENT TYPE OF WATER I SHOULD BE USING?
    THANK YOU!
    P.S.
    YOU'RE A GREAT TEACHER!
AND YOUR TANKS LOOK BEAUTIFUL 🐠🐟🐡🐠🐟
    🐠🐡🐟
I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME ANSWER SOME OF THE BETTA QUESTIONS ⁉️
    THANKS..WAITING FOR A REPLY🐟🐠

I have been able to keep 3 yellow labs,3 yellow tail acei,3 Rusty’s,3 gouramis,4 San Juan Cory’s,2 neon tetras and 2 plecos as a community tank. So far they all get along and there’s no fighting. As far as the water,it’s pretty clean all the time but not as clear as yours. Does purigen really work?

hey amigo... I'm a new fan.. watching all of your videos. :D
Just saying i have only EVER done Fish IN cycle when setting up an aquarium tank... best way to do it... (done it about 5 times) just add the fish.. then after about 5 or so days start measuring for ammonia... if present start the dosing of PRIME & STABILITY. Best, easiest way to cyle.. chao

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Glad you’re enjoying the channel. Even though fish in cycle does work, some see it as inhumane to put that fish through the stress.
There are products on the market now that can help cycle much faster without having to let any fish suffer. Stability works great and I use it to cycle every time without any fish. But thanks for sharing, everyone has a method that works well for them 👍

I'm so glad I've discovered this ch. I'm new to owning pet fish and boy have i been messing up alot. I've already watched a few of your videos but I haven't come across one that explains why my fish tank is developing a slime coat on all surfaces. I know it's a noob question but is this slime coat the beneficial bacteria? I hope not because I've been scrubbing it off with a clean sponge. It's also clear slime and not algae. This slime coat also developed really fast after i set up my tank. Anybody il keep watching more of your videos to learn more. This ch is great.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Im glad you found the channel as well. 😊 No its not your beneficial bacteria, they are microscopic. Not sure of exactly what kind of slime coat you're referring too but it could just be a natural thing with a new tank. Your tank is cycling and establishing itself. As it ages and matures it will balance itself on its own.

Nice video 👍🏾 😊.. I have some questions if I freshly bought a new tank and tap water and I already put in Prime, Stability and Stress Coat and some aquarium salt ..what else should I put in when cycling a new tank? Was I wrong to put aquarium salt?
Here are my parameters as of today:
    pH: 7.6
    Ammonia: 0.50ppm
    Nitrite: 0.25 ppm
    Nitrate: 0ppm

  • @10sdawn

I'm new with keeping a single Betta in a 10 gallon tank and my ammonia is 0.50 and nitrites less than 0.25 ppm. This tank has been running over a month and now I understand about using prime and stability. My tank is having a very hard time establishing so I'm hoping this works. How much do I add prime and stability daily for a 10 gallon tank. Thanks and I really enjoy all your videos about fish keeping/experience. Thank you Kev
