  • Heather James Fine Art is pleased to offer this superb pair of stone Fu Dogs
Fu Dogs take their name from the Chinese term for Buddhism, fojiao, but are also known as 'Fu Lions', a homonym based on the Chinese word 'Fu' meaning luck or prosperity. In Japan, where the statues are placed outside Shinto shrines, the images are called shishi, which means 'stone lion' in Chinese. They are also known in Japan as 'Korean dogs,' probably because the statues reached Japan from China via Korea. Because the images have existed for so many years, the meaning of the symbols attached to the animals has grown and changed. Today, there are more explanations for each element of the statues' iconography as there are diferences in style.

Thanks. I had a pair of Fo Lions on my book case. But they were wax and melted in the 130 degree heat at my house in the Desert of Palm Springs CA. Ok but what I wanted to say was for Marco Polo it must have been frightening also because of the Italians and Greeks the lions were set out at night to eat the people who didn't run to their homes in time before the night came. Any beggars or older people or children left outside (drinkers) were eaten that night. People used to run and pound on all the doors at night hoping that some kind soul would let them in before the lions were let lose. But those two pair of large stone statues are very very nice.
