It amazes me that society thinks riding bicycles on the road with no protection is more acceptable and its praised more than on a motorbike where you actually have more protected gear on and going at the correct speed which is safer. That just baffles my mind. The media doesnt help either they always have to show motorbike fatalities on advertisments not actually showing the benefits of motorcycling.

Totally agree nowadays push biking is bloody dangerous .
Lots of car drivers cut me off constantly .
The only thing with 50s is once you get out of town or over 30mph areas you do suffer from car hassle.
But I agree getting mobile is great for youngsters so overall a 50 is ok.

I'm 25 now, and ride class A bikes. My dad has been riding his whole life, so unsurprisingly I bought a moped when I was 10 riding around the farm. Got a brand new 2009 Yamaha DT 50 for my moped liscense. When I got it I immediately ordered performance parts to make it go faster, but the first couple of weeks I rode around doing 30 mph while wating for the performance parts. Out of the two years on mopeds, those two first weeks was without question the most dangerous. All sorts of crazy ass maniacs overtaking me whenever they wanted to, completely disregarding my safety as a two-wheeler. Had many close calls due to other idiots in cars trying to hurry to the shop before beer sales closed. As soon as I trimmed my moped and started riding in flow with the rest of the traffic, I had almost no such incidents. No more than regular motorcyclists anyway... I dont understand some laws, and that mopeds are restricted to 30 mph is one of them. Only makes it more dangerous if you ask me. I will trust my future son/daughter on a 50cc, because I will bring them up to respect the risks.

in Denmark where i live you can get 50cc mopedbikes and small aprillas but are limited in the engine so it only goes around 30kph (19mph) so it has to follow cycle laws instead of vehicle laws on the road. when you're 18 you can drive a 125cc, 20 500cc, 21 unlimited. they are very carefull with putting "kids" on bikes as it takes almost half a year to finish all the courses for you to get the license. +it cost 2.250 dollars to take the drivers license. sorry for bad english, just thought i would share the information :)

I learned on a Honda pc50 moped at 14 years old and a year later I was on a Malaguti 50cc enduro motorcycle when we lived in Paris in the mid 70s. At the time all that was required was proof of insurance and you could ride on the streets of Paris. I learned so much on those 50cc bikes riding in all weather year round in Paris traffic. Only had one incident that was entirely my fault where I lowsided on knobby tires on wet cobblestones around “chicken circle”. Chicken circle is the the next street off of the roundabout at the Arc de Triomphe. My next bike was a Kawasaki 100 at 16 years old and the cc’s have gone up from there and still riding. Starting on smaller displacement motorcycles should be mandatory in the states IMO. Great video Guys!

Where I live kids are allowed to get a driving license (AM) for 50 cc (moped stage 1 - 45 km/h or stage 2 - 25 km/h) at the age of 15. At 16 you kan get license (A1) for a 125 cc max 15hp and power to weight ratio 0,1 hp/kg. Steps to follow is A2 and A (unrestricted).
About convincing parents to get a moped/motorcycle for their kid...
If the parents have NO experience of two wheel - why not start to explore this together?! It can be a parent/kid-bonding thing.
If they do have experience and still say no... Thats a tough one. Beats me!
But I firmly believe you are right about starting with a moped. There are ALOT of situations in traffic that can kill you, also on a moped, BUT on a moped many situations will be in slower speeds and speed is (what i believe) the no1 reason for thing to go bad. So - better make the misstakes on a slow speed moped than a higher speed motorcycle. And you dont need that much power or CC before you reach the danger...
I also liked when you talked about teaching the kids about traffic! We need to pass along the respect for the forces and dangers involved.

Thanks guys. My Mum & Dad bought me my first 50cc bike in 1980. It was in the shed for a month whilst I waited for my birthday. That felt like a really long time. My DT50 was restricted to 30mph and it soon became apparent that my college run was really scary with the majority of it being on a 50mph single carriageway road with lots of blind bends. We exchanged it for a 1977 Suzuki AP50 which because it had pedals was legally unrestricted and could keep up with traffic. I'd encourage youngsters to wait a year and get a 125 for this reason. But a nifty fifty makes perfect sense for the urban or rural commute and gains you valuable experience in the meantime. The licencing laws are a complete mess now though and as we're no longer in Europe should undergo a complete overhaul to encourage more youngsters into bikes. All bikes - especially low capacity ones should be part of the modern transport strategy. Obviously, safety is paramount so I don't suggest for a minute that new riders be let loose without appropriate instruction and training. But you get my drift 👍

I live in Israel when from 15 and a half you can already ride a 125cc motorcycle (though 125cc mopeds are used most) kids that age go to work as delivery drivers and that's dangerous as hell
I am 17 and when I just got my license I didn't even own a bike and went ahead and started working to get more skilled riding, from experience that is really dangerous because you always have to be in a rush and that's just recipe for disaster, had a few friends crash (I never did, though I did slip 1 time driving 2, yes, TWO miles an hour trying to switch lanes on a wet road and a second time when my headlights didn't work because job mopeds are always damaged and I slipped going for a turn at 15-25 mph not noticing the road is in soap water from other businesses cleaning... and that hurt quite a bit)
overall letting a kid on a motorcycle at a young age is all about trust, some kids are the type of kids to do wheelies and crash on the first try and hurt others, some go through red lights or drive on the pavements but there are also law abiding kids that don't do stupid shit and actually care for their own safety.

I need some advice. I’m looking at getting a 125cc or 50cc I’m 17 and it’s to get to college because it is a 35 min drive on a bike or 2 hour and 45 mins on public transport which would be best a 125cc or a 50cc ( i don’t have to go on motorways )

    • @MrDarcy-OlMan
      @MrDarcy-OlMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

¿?¿? Definitely a 125. 50cc’s are painfully, even dangerously slow (because of restriction to meet legislation). There’s a lot of 125’s to choose from. We’re reviewing one at the moment and will be uploading to TH-cam tonight or Monday morning.

Patrick Thompson can you get her to watch the video? You can say; you’re likely to catch Covid19 and pass it on if you use public transport. You won’t rely on getting lifts. You won’t meet weirdos at bus stops or train stations. Tell her she brought you up and thus, she can trust you

@@danieliusrutkauskas9765 not done it yet, building up to it. I've started to introduce the concept by showing the interest I have in bikes and talking about family friends that have 50cc bikes. Just laying the foundation before I ask the big question. Also I really liked the point made in the video about how if you're going to get a motorbike regardless when your older then its safer to start and learn road craft on a slower, smaller bike.
