IMO the fact that some of the performers aren't good singers is what makes it so good. This movie manages to combine cartoonish storytelling with awkward realism into something bizarre and charming, and I wouldn't change a damn thing about it.
Yep. Like I'm glad they picked the main two to be great singers, obviously Meryl and Amanda are great singers but almost everyone else was pretty rough and I actually think that made it feel more... genuine??? maybe that's word I'm looking for

In an interview Stellan Skarsgård says that he was approached by his manager, asking if he could sing, and he was like "definitely not." then the manager said "well, they've decided to make the mamma Mia musical into a film" and he was like "sign me up, of course I can sing. People can fly in movies so I can sing"

I actually watched a interview with one of the actors and they said that it was only one night where they all were invited to dinner and drank this Greek alcohol. Apparently if you drink water the next day your body reacts to it like you are still under the effects of the alcohol so the cast that had to shoot that day were a bit tipsy

Yea Pierce does not have the best singing voice but I find it endearing. In *cough* "real life" most of us would sound bad but he threw himself into it anyway. Pierce also really wanted to work with Meryl Streep and basically said "I'll do anything".
He didn't even know it was a musical. All he knew that it was starring Meryl Streep and he said "yes" 😂
For some reason I always thought his voice was the cutest voice ever. I've watched Mamma Mia for the first time when I was very young and always felt like his voice was very cozy(?) I don't know if that makes sense

honestly, the fact that the songs aren't super well polished and sound a little wonky at times just makes me love this movie more. it makes it feel more real, since the plot and the setting is quite out there, so them just singing and it not sounding like they just came off the west end helps me love it more (especially since it's really evident form both the movie and interviews that the cast had such a BLAST doing this)

She had lost contact of her mother for years, she just assumed that she was dead (at least to her, she was)
Although it could also be seen as her mother being higher up on the hierarchy/class scale
I choose to interpret it as Donna had two moms. The dead one is a god fearing catholic, who fell desperately in love with Cher.

In part two, the viewer gets some surprises. Not saying much to avoid spoilers, it is better appreciated if one have not read web info about the sequel.

He IS Selvig, Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård who also portrays Selvig in the Marvel movies. And Pierce Brosnan DID play James Bond in a couple of Bond movies. :)
Colin Firth is famous for a lot of things but very much so for the lake scene in a tv production of Pride and Prejudice, wet see-through shirt and all. And Abbas (also fellow Swedes) timeless pop music can put a smile on anyone's face.

1. You're not the only one who was a bit troubled with Pierce's voice, though it is clear that he sings with all his heart, which is important for ABBA songs.
2. If you're up for more feelings, watch the sequel, which takes place after this movie, but also has flashback sequences so we see how Donna met Harry, Bill, and Sam.
3. I saw the touring version of the musical in San Francisco in 2001 and loved it. When we finally come out of the pandemic, I recommend catching the show.
4. You should totally be suspicious of Donna's employees. Not only are they a literal Greek chorus, but their narrative function is that of a Greek chorus, with less tragedy than usual. See also the last end-credit sequence.
5. A woman came up with the idea for the show, and got Benny and Bjorn to sign on. She hired a female writer to write the book. They hired a female director to direct the West End production, who also directed this movie. There's a reason for all that women's energy.

The first time I saw this movie I ended up listening to ABBA songs for a week. And yes, Pierce Brosnan was Bond & that’s Selvig.
Obviously I missed the last part lol....and yes, Pierce Brosnan’s singing is one of the things many people bring up about this movie.
Man i remember being 12 and absolutely not being able to stand ABBA because my father would like....try to force feed me their music sayin it was wonderful ahahaha and i wasnt havin any of it up till at 14 i didnt watch Mamma Mia...this movie truly changed my perception of them as a band and their songs....and that s how i started boppin big time to them. Also my big massive crush on Agnetha might have helped ahaahhha
I've heard many people say that Pierce Brosnan can't sing, and obviously, by Broadway standards he's beyond amateurish. But I get a bit grumpy at people who say he can't sing at all, because they've clearly never had the misfortune of having to listen to a tone deaf person sing. He sings as well as most long time choir singing men I've met.
I feel like Pierce has that off-key dad voice that just makes it so charming lol

The most amazing thing about this movie based on the (broadway?) musical, is that the writers took ABBAs biggest hits, broke them down and built the story based on them.

This used to be my absolute favourite as a child. I legit had this movie memorized by the time I was 5. I'm nearly 17 new and honestly I still love this movie just as much. I'm so glad they turned the musical into a movie because even though I'm sure the live musical is great (have not had the pleasure to see it yet I hope that someday) I think the Greek island scenery is one of the best parts of the movie and works so well in creating this very fun and environmental feeling. Idk I just love Greece is general and this movie was kind of my first introduction of it so it might just be me.
Amanda and Dominic were actually dating during this film, might gotten a bit awkward when they did the second one 8 years later and she was married with a 5 months baby girl LOL
The reason why they all look like they're having a great time is not just because it's fun songs, they're on a beautiful Mediterranean island, and have great cast chemistry, but they were all also slightly buzzed. On set they had a constant tap of Champagne that all the actors were drinking.

I’ve never realized that Sam/brosnan wasn’t a good singer, for me the whole movie is so natural and realistic (in a dramatically way), but they didn’t use auto tune, it’s just all emotions and passion. It also reminds me of my dad who casually sings at home. My dad though sings very awful, so compared to that, Pierce brosnan is really good. Yet, it feels familiar and loving, he just puts his heart there and doesn’t care how it sounds.
I know other people have said this already, but please have tissues on hand if you’re going to react to the sequel. I won’t give any spoilers, but I will say that both films do a great job of capturing the bond between a parent and child (specifically mother daughter in the context of the movie franchise).
And like you were saying, this movie exudes joy and happiness, which makes it one of my favorite movies to watch when I need a temporary escape from reality.
On a side note, you *might* become obsessed with ABBA after watching these movies, I know I did.

Totally re-writes the baby daddy trope. I secretly adore this movie. And yeah, the singing is iffy in some areas, but I'm glad the actors did their own singing. They tried hard.

When Mama Mia Too came out in theaters I had not seen the first one so I watched it at home before I went to the theater for context. I cried so much, all the feels and then again in the theater. So many emotions. And you are not alone, Pierce Brosnon's singing is very uncomfortable. lol

First of all, LMFAO at you somehow casting James Bond without even realizing it. That said, I love this movie so freaking much. It's ridiculous and absurd and awkward in all the best ways. What I love is that you *know* every single actor in this, with the possible exception of Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper at this early stage of their careers, is very well aware they are too big and famous for a low-budget jukebox musical. But... it's also a paid vacation to Greece to goof around and act silly for a few months so why not?
Also, I will cry every day for the rest of my life until you post a reaction to Here We Go Again. It's the only musical sequel I've ever thought was actually better than the original! I mean, granted, the competition is Phantom: Love Never Dies, but I digress...

I watched this movie in cinema with my parents and my mom and I were just laughing, when my dad told us afterwards that he thought it was a movie about ABBA, not just with their music 😆
Btw I'm so addicted to the soundtrack (of this and the second part). I can't stop singing along. I mean I loved ABBA's music before this movie already, but this magnified that.

I grew up listening to ABBA songs, but didn't get around to watching this movie until a month ago. Like you said, it's got great energy and fun music, but the plot is really just there to string together the musical numbers.
Fun fact: This movie was released the same weekend as The Dark Knight. Although TDK ended up setting a record for opening weekend box office, Mamma Mia set the record for a movie based on a Broadway musical.

how is this your first time omg, i was 9 when i went to see this film with my mum, dad and grandparents during a family holiday. its my all time favorite film. i couldnt tell you how many times i have seen it but it has to be over 500 times.
The sequel is even better - such a beautiful/happy/sad ending that makes me cry every time

Yes so happy !! I love that movie (and the sequel, you must watch it !) so much, really some of my comfort movies !! Also i don't really know if you know but this movie is an adaptation of a musical and all the songs are from the group ABBA (yes it's all bops) and they did such a good job to incorporate them in a story (they barely touch the original lyrics)

The entire island just knows they’re meant to be the awkward extras.
The bachelor/bachelorette parties are just amazing. Like a) it just looks epic, b) they’re swinging from vines and that is the level of extra I want- no, that I need.
Also you realize that if she told any of them that they were the father, they’d all stay to help. I also would bet that even if she had them all meet when she first had the baby, they’d all stay around to help raise her even though they wouldn’t know who the father is. They’re just great guys. Kinda weird. But great.
WAIT! YOU HAVEN’T SEEN TEEN BEACH MOVIE!?!?!?! I- YOU- GAH! Teen beach movie came out right before the decline of my Disney phase and I was OBSESSED. Ross Lynch (I saw him as Austin Moon) was my gay awakening which may have contributed to it but whatever. Also, if you are to watch teen beach movie, when you’re done with them both, check out Tanner’s social media because I think he does stuff with other cast members like Rascal and Giggles. You better watch it eventually. (Also sry if I’m overhyping it)
