The decision to make Donna be dead was Meryl’s. Meryl famously doesn’t do sequels, so she would only come back if she could effectively “pass the torch” to the younger stars. Plus she’s 70 now and didn’t want to do all the heavy choreo anymore.

@@moongirl8807 The late 90s stage musical Mamma Mia! was based on the music of 70s band ABBA. Bjorn and Benny of ABBA did not write the story, but they were part of the process in both the play and the movies. Essentially the story was created to fit with the songs. The women of ABBA had very limited involvement in the play and movies (Agnetha in particular is a very private person). During the end credits, the young Dynamos pay tribute to the women of ABBA wearing those iconic animal print shirts, which you can see the women of ABBA wearing in a video here on TH-cam. The references to ABBA in the movies always strike a heart chord. Bjorn and Benny can also be seen at the end of the first Mamma Mia movie as part of the "Greek Choir."

One of the reasons Meryl Streep wasn’t in most of this movie is because she is adamant about not doing sequels to her films, so they had to make this a “prequel” and cast younger versions instead. To me, her surprise cameo appearance here made it all the more heartfelt! And it gave Lily James a chance to truly shine. There is also talk about them making a third movie, seeing that there’s still a lot of ABBA songs they could utilise! The first Mamma Mia movie is actually in my top 3 favorite movies of all times, but since the sequel came out it made it's own place next to the first one cuz woah both movies are AMAZING and I couldn't separate them, I can't put in words how much the Mamma Mia movies and ABBA mean to me, they give me serotonine on a daily basis ❤ I'm so glad you liked both movies~

  • @lilytyler6498

Donna and Sophie’s moments in the first film hit so much harder knowing that donnas gone in the second, her ‘we have time’ line before them getting ready for the wedding makes me sob so much now🥺🥺😭

  • @vvgirl6173
    @vvgirl6173 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I remember bawling my eyes out every other minute when watching this movie in the cinema with my mum.
We are both big mamma Mia and ABBA fans, so we went in for a good time. Leading up to seeing the movie I wanted to try and avoid as much spoilers as possible, so I wasn't suspecting anything.
And ho boy did I not expect the emotional roller-coaster. I did not have time to stop crying before I started crying again.
Even after the movie ended and we returned to the car, we continued to cry in the car for a good 10 minutes. And then cried some more for the rest of the day.
I love both the movies. The first was part of my childhood so I have it near memoriesed in my mind visually. And it was just full of fun emotional moments.
The second is just a waterfall of tears. Just absolute tears. I only seen the movie once but even watching this video and seeing the clips of it is making me cry. Especially the baptised scene, that hits me hard.
If you wanna be happy, watch the first movie.
If you wanna be depressed, watch the second movie.
    All I'm saying.

idk If anyone explained this but to address the "wait I thought she was dead??" about Sophie's grandma, my theory is in the first movie donna said that line because she hasn't seen her mother in way too long and just assumed she was dead or its just an actual continuity error

  • @CassandraTheAuthor

Ah i love both movies. I grew up with the first one and cried when the 2nd came out and was the only person at my theaters who saw it. It came out exactly 10 years later and i just love them both. Also a new sub here. Found this channel a few days ago and im in love.

It was 10 years irl between the two movies, but about 5 years story time.. In that time, Amanda Seyfried became a mother herself, so the connection to Sofia got stronger. Glad to see you having a box of tissues for this.
The thing about being an Abba fan before seeing these movies or the show is that you recognize the song lines when they show up in dialog, or you recognized the melodies when they are played before the singing starts. They almost function as leitmotifs, very similar to Star Wars and Marvel movies.
