- Talking Points Memo TV recently went with Senator John Kerry on a trip to the Colbert Report. This is the behind the scenes footage from Senator Kerry's guest appearance.

He seems so sweet and smiley and eager to please out of character. It's unnerving.
+Amy Summers Compliments improve performance. It's easier for him to control him.
Actually he supposedly does this with every guest because once he had someone who didn't realize he was a character act. So he always tries to get on friendly terms before the show and given the guest -politician, author, musician, etc.- some idea of his character and what they can expect him to do.
Colbert's hair is never out of character
Colbert seems like the nicest dude ever
I'm surprised that many of you are surprised that he preps guests beforehand...... its TV. I was never under the assumption they go out there not knowing shit.
colbert said "Just be yourself" :)
Yep, I was always under the assumption that guests get prepped beforehand. He would have to tell them that what he does is an act, to not take it seriously and just go with the flow. Otherwise you'll have a few uninformed guests, guests who know nothing about Colbert's shtick, who think "wtf is this?! I'm not taking any more of it!" and storm off mid-interview.
Similarly, guests would probably be pre-screened for a sense of humour. Those without one don't get to be on the show.
grantss1 Yup
They don't necessarily dismiss a potential guest because they don't want to go along with his act. Every guest is going to be informed about his act, but some of them still choose to put him on the spot by asking him very serious questions about his, well technically his character's morals. That is what makes the show hilarious. He gives absolutely ridiculous responses that only someone playing a character could give.
The type of character Stephen plays is technically supposed to be exaggerated, but he does it so well that it seems real. There are actually people who are fans of his show who believe he is actually a right-wing conservative Christian...
"Do you know I am in character"
"You know I am an idiot"
xD I lost it at that moment
He's such a cuteypie sweetie and it's to die for to hear him sing happy birthday to an audience member in Latin.
A good friend of mine recently attended a live taping of the show and was able to hang out backstage before, during, and after the production. She told me that he is incredibly gracious with the staff, extremely personable, and an overall genuine chap.
Having been to the show myself (backstage, even!), it was cool to see his real personality conflict with his character. This video is a good show of that. Before each performance he does a Q&A session with the audience, and he's really an extremely smart guy. Comedic genius.
Stephen had better prove himself when he goes on late night; his character was gold and no one wants to see that go.
I'd just be happy for him to be back. :| But we have 9 months for him to appear! 9!!! Woe is us!!!!
I was having the same "fear".... but after almost 2 years, I think we can say he has officially prove himself....not only he keeps some escense of his character... but also, I think he's a great host, very classy, and has this thing with guests that he always tries his best to make them comfortable... if someone is a bit shy, he constantly throw in some info so the guest can have something to talk about... I really like him
Just look at how alpha Stephen is. When John Kerry broke eye-contact at 0:34 Stephen subtly but deliberately wrested it back.
+Bob Shatner alpha my nuts son he was slobbing his knob before the show
+LulzRoyce That's called being a good host, dumbass. Which is why you'd never host a show.
"Alpha"? He's super nice and absurdly charming. There is nothing intimidating (what I understand "alpha male" means) about Stephen, at least from my perspective.
TrollBuster An alpha commands immense respect and power, yet will never feel the need to make another person feel inferior or intimidated. That was what I intended to mean with the use of the word at least. :)
You don't know what alpha means in the human world. What Bob said is correct.
You, sir, have a superlative grasp of the English language coupled with razor-sharp insight. How I envy you.
Wow...Both men are pretty tall, and Sen. Kerry is dwarfing Stephen!
And I have a mondo, major crush on Stephen Colbert
This is great to see. Stephen Colbert is such a professional, such a great comedian. He's like David Byrne but as good at comedy as David Byrne is at being in Talking Heads and being David Byrne. They look alike.
It'a crazy to hear John Kerry knowing the word "blogosphere", and even crazier that most people don't know the word nowadays
That was a very cool look behind the scenes of Colbert. He was cool to allow that.
yeah, every time i see him, he's in character. the only other times I've seen him out of character is when he's in a different role.
he is an amazing actor in the sense that he literally never brakes character.
Colbert is colbert. He's in constant character when he's on tv. The subtle things he says all the time gives away his genius and in no way did am I disappointed to see him out of character lol. It just ups my respect for him
Mmmmm Stephen... so idiotically handsome.
He is so nice in real life!:D
Wow, I thought I would never be able to see Colbert out of character. Now, after catching a glimpse of what he is really like, I can appreciate his tremendous acting talent.
Now that's what Zach does before every episode of Between The Two Ferns
between two ferns is scripted
NukeTown BB what does it have to do with what I have said?
I thought you were saying tf was improvised my mistake if not
NukeTown BB nah, I know it's scripted. However when Zack first meets a guest he needs to break it down to them, explain how it's all going to be like. Then the script kicks in.
i wish they didn't even have that much
stephen is very agressive and dominant in the video, a little surprised by it
Yeah, he certainly lets Kerry know who's in charge. At one point Kerry even tries to get the camera man to stop filming and Colbert has none of it. You don't need to worry about people filming what people say when you speak the truth.
He is just about to go on... it's 5-10 min before showtime. Have you ever been out of your livingroom?
great behind the scenes look, thanks for uploading
Colbert's a witty guy. Understatement of the century. :D
Hey! Hi Veracifier!
Colbert usually goes to the green room before air, to verify he is just being humourous, to make the guest feel comfortable. - And this was before Better Know A District!
{{hugs}}
I absolutely love seeing the behind the scenes of the show. Really gives insight to the brilliance, and style behind Colbert. Honestly, as a writer and comedian myself, it's nice to have this sense of reality to see how laid back and real he is.
Great vid. Funny the narrator talking about how small the studio is. When I went to see the show in March, I couldn't believe how small and crappy the place is. Great behind the scenes vid, good work.
Yeah, Kerry is the best guy to have for an interview, especially after his comments about the troops that are giving their time, limbs, and lives for us.
that was insightful for sure. thank you
It's fascinating to listen to Colbert talk about his character in the third person.
this man is so brilliant!
i remember one time, stephen interviewed a lady congresswoman, i think it was. she didn't know that he was "in character" all of the time--and she got pissed and began referring to him as "Mr. ColberT, Mr. ColberT" instead of Colbert....It was the best thing ever!
1:39 "You want to DIP SOME SKULL?" He's referring to Kerry being in the secret society of SKULL AND BONES. HAIL ERIS! 23 SKIDOO!
hes talking about skoal chewing tobacco
Hahaha yeah about that... Like someone else already said he's referring to chewing tobacco... Definitely not weird ass "secret societies."
Yeah, the secret society of Skoal and Bones. Don't taser me bro! 322 lol
even this is brilliant
Well thanks for adding that part of you talking where you tell us what were about to hear them say. Definitely necessary.
thank you so much as much as I love the character Stephen it's always nice to see the real one and to hear what he actually says to the guest before the show.
I'm so glad that he let them film this
You mean it's all an act! Gasp! It's great that Kerry is a fan of Colbert's speech from last year.
that was a treat.. Very happy to see this. I have been a fan since the days of strangers with candy, and have never seen him in a natural setting.
this just goes to prove that colbert is one of the BEST actors in america. he admits he's an act but doesn't let it show on the mainstage. 5 stars.
btw, i made a colbert report tribute. look up "The Final Source of Truth(iness)"
This is awesome to see.
Thanks for posting this great behind-the-scenes video! We're linking to it at Colbert University (google to find us - TH-cam won't let us post a URL!). (Man, Stephen had a bad cold then!)
Awesome post, thanks!
I wonder how many of my countrymen get this post!? Certainly, not the one watching FoxNews!!!
I agree with you, below comment, "Colbert is a national treasure!"
Love that guy! Big smile!
This is exactly how I imagined him explaining what's gonna happen before his interviews. Glad that it's now confirmed.
You, sir, are awesome.
That was cool to see. Thanks for posting this.
I totally agree. Sometimes his guests look a bit stunned over the questions.
Man that man is great. (And Jon Stewart too)
i've seen stephen colbert on many shows; never once have i seen him break character.
thanks so much.
laterz
colbert is great at what he does
Colbert is awesome, I want him to speak at my funeral, that would make my day.
Colbert is a GENIUS - there is nothing more to say
hey man that was freakin' amazing! I never seen a behind the scenes shot with colbert!
i love colbert. it really is awesome to be able to see what he is really like. It also impresses me a lot to see that he is even more intelligent (as i suspected) out of character then he is on the show. Thank you for this video!
That is awesome. It's crazy to actually see Colbert out of character. He's awesome, this is awesome, and you sir, are awesome.
Seeing the 'real' Stephen Colbert peek out shows him to be a compassionate, caring man...I suspect he might be a 'closet conservative' on many issues. That caring man is what makes the Colbert Report so special...WHAT AN ACTOR! If he ever does drama, he'll have a house full of Oscars!
Cool, i'm glad i got to see this.
I always wondered if he briefs his guests about the character he's in. He's just such an adorable guy.
Colbert is fantastic! I positively adore him.
Yeah, let's face it: The man's a genius. He's miles ahead of anyone in politics at this time, and his confidence (White House press conference, anyone?) really seems to me how a politician should act.
Thank you so much for this, I still can't believe how many people I know who still don't understand his satire.
Why did I get this weird feeling that they were going to kiss right when Colbert came in???
I love it. He butters em' up as to not offend them but he probably really means everything he says to them on stage.
She was the DC representative. Her name was Elanor Holmes Norton.
I heart Stephen Colbert.
Good vid and I like your site design
If some of you aren't aware, It was josh marshall's blog that asked its readers to find out information about recently fired U.S. attorneys last december after reading a short report about the firing of a state attorney in the Arkansas democrat gazette. The rest is becoming history.
ya man. this is so cool to see.
some comedians, actors, and performers never (or rarely) allow themselves to be seen out of character and Colbert is one such comedian. Any time a camera is on him, he's super-conservative pundit Colbert. This is a kind of quality that we don't often see in modern film and theater. Many shows like this have a pre-performance meeting to prepare a guest for the event - even comedians like Leno and Letterman do this.
Stephen Colbert, American hero.
Keep hope alive.
This was really fun to watch. It was cool to see SC come out of character and be loose with Kerry. I'm also glad Kerry liked his Bush diss.
Awesome. He's such a cool guy.
Ever notice that everyone who's really funny is also intelligent? Ever notice there are hardly any funny Conservatives?
Steven Crowder
it was great to hear the real Colbert on NPR today. I liked how he was also willing to admit that O'Reilly was smart enough not to play into Colbert's antics when he came on the CR.
It is, however they video-edited the video portion to be from his interview from last night, not this video clip.
colbert is great and even greater after having made his first R&B music video.
The fact that Colbert never breaks character on show makes it even more funny.
What a wonderful peak at the real Stephen Colbert. Excellent.
wow, it's great to see stephen colbert out of character :)
@rhettrongun
It was on wiki, but the original source is a university study on German gun control during Nazi regime. The legislation as I understood it, on one hand restricted the rights of Jews to own a gun (they were forbidden to own one) on the other hand eased the control on other's especially for NSDAP members who did not need a permit any longer. So it didn't just took away weapons from Jews and non-citizens, but also "gave" them to members of the party.
Nice find, thanks.
Very good point. Very good.
seriously? How is it not painfully obvious that he isn't the same guy off the air? Love, the Easter Bunny.
i love how his talking to him like there just chating, but his just taking the piss hilarious!
LOVE HIM
He's so down to earth
No they do, and kerry has his people of course scounted out the show it is just to make sure people don't forget. One senator apparently did even through he had been told and stormed out after the show.
Kerry might've stood a better chance at the presidency if he'd been this interpersonal on the national stage.
Its good to know he makes sure his guests realize what there waking into.
I'm so intrigued, what are his actual views? It is glaringly obvious that his performance on his show is meant more for the comedic aspect than the informative aspect, but in general he asks very good questions to his guests and has a great stage presence, and I really would love to know how he actually feels about the things he talks about. Colbert is an intriguing fellow.
He means that what his persona on the screen isn't meant to come off rude and he means no disrespect if he pokes fun at them, basically. Even anchors for news broadcast stations will refer to themselves as a "character" occasionally.
I was in this room!!
well i thought it was understood he was in character during the show. shows his genius
I worry about the people, who really think he's serious when he's in character.
I love that show. It's funny that people didn't realize that it's a satire. I loved seeing Bush's face at that dinner when Colbery made those jokes!
I completely agree.
LOL, i thought the guy with the umbrella when they got out of the car, was holding a Churro. I was like, "Wtf??"
I always wondered if Cobert warned his guests before hand, this is so cool!!!! I love it when he says, "you know my character is an idiot"
Colbert's comedic genius.
