Most Elvis fans wouldn’t consider the movies listed here as proper Westerns…his 3 proper Westerns; Love Me Tender, Flaming Star and Charro were all pretty solid. His turn in Tickle Me actually rescued Allied Artists from bankruptcy.
I kinda liked "A Thunder of Drums." Richard Boone's portrayal of the CO put it up several notches from the start, and any story written by James Warner Bellah was in the same class as most of the cavalry westerns of the genre. All three of John Wayne's cavalry trilogy were based on Bellah stories, right down to the names of the characters. I think the young lieutenant could have been better cast, but George Hamilton was popular at the time. And Arthur O'Connell nailed his role as the top sergeant, a role that the talented actor O'Connell usually wasn't cast in.
I would almost put John Wayne's The Alamo here .What saves it is Richard Widmark as Bowie ,Laurence Harvey as Travis ,Richard Boone as Houston.A great score by Dimitri Tiomlkin and 2nd unit work reportedly directed by John Ford.I remember being thrilled seeing this movie as a kid but once I studied the Alamo --the movie is grossly inaccurate .The 2005 version of the Alamo is far superior .With Biilly Bob Thorton as Crockett ,Jason Patric as Bowie ,Patrick Wilson as Travis and Dennis Quaid as Houston .Far more accurate .
The Alamo is one of those not bad, not good movies. Parts of it are fine, other parts weak. What might have happened if John Ford had actually directed it I wonder.
Texas history teacher here: Yes, the Billy Bob Thornton version of the Alamo is far more accurate, but John Wayne's movie is nowhere nearly as awful as you seem to think. I watch Wayne's every 23 February and Thornton's every 6 March to mark the beginning and end of the 1836 siege.
Elvis made at least one other Western; "Flaming Star", 1960. It wasn't great, but it was better than the films mentioned here, mostly because it was less of an "Elvis" film and more of a traditional Western. He does sing but he also does some actual acting.

A great video about lousy pictures, in that respect, it ranks up there with Johnny Depp’s “Ed Wood.”
I think Jesse James meets Frankenstein‘s daughter and Billy the Kid versus Dracula belong in it. Totally different category. Probably camp or Cult westerns
In the pantheon of Audie Murphy westerns this one is below average, but entirely watchable and Audie, James Best and Ted DeCorsia are good. The finale is a bit forced, but overall I don't consider it all that bad.
Answer to the worst 60’s westerns. 1: The Desperados. 1a: White Comanche. Those two make Monogram B westerns look like these 60’s westerns: Once Upon A Time In The West, Magnificent 7 and The Wild Bunch.
Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter. What a title! I wonder what they were on when they thought up this one. I'll bet this made Siskel and Ebert's dog of the year. P.S. It doesn't even rise to the standards of a worst western.... The sad thing is there were talented people working on this and the other films. The Fastest Guitar Alive (1967) starring Roy Orbison a was critical and commercial flop, and his contract at MGM was terminated. It's most famous today for the Guitar-Gun that he uses in it. "I can kill you and play your funeral march!" -Roy Orbison, 1967 🤠🎸😆
@famouspeople63 In Son Of Paleface, Roy Rogers used a customized Colt that was hidden in a guitar in a shootout. It was actually more practical. When even Roy Rogers equipment is more grounded, you know that's saying something! 😆
Disagree about A Thunder of Drums, Richard Boone is very good in an otherwise routine 2 star western. The same can be said of Audie Murphy and The Quick Gun. Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter is a horror movie just set in the west, It's okay as that and as good as Billy the Kid vs Dracula. Heller in Pink Tights, so bad I've only watched it once -- and regretted that. But 4 for Texas, I've always liked but then I enjoy Martin and Sinatra. Elvis never worked in any of the Westerns he did; they're all pretty danged silly. A Time for Killing has a decent cast but it really does bite the bullet. Young Billy Young isn't great but has a great cast but you're right it just doesn't hang together very well as a movie. Thanks, Wrangler.

I actually liked A Thunder of Drums, 4 for Texas, and A Time for Killing. Tickle Me and Stay Away Joe aren't Westerns. Man, the rest are true stinkers!
The Russ Meyer film was soft core porn and more of a cartoon than an actual parody. It wasn't a play for laughs but for leers. Shouldn't even be in the list. Would be better described as a "Breastern" than a "Western."
Hollywierd butchered two of Louis Lamour's books they made a comedy out of "The Broken Gun" and "Heller with a Gun". Even "Shalako" with its miscast leads followed the plot of the books.
I kinda like A Time for Killing... it's one of those films that's so bad it's kinda good... The director's change impacted the quality of the film. Roger Corman did not have a clue how to direct a big-budget project with stars...I agree the editing, especially the sound editing, is atrocious. For example, the opening credits blends into the first scene, and the sound editing cuts off the singer....It's very obvious how awful the cut is...So obvious i thought my DVD had skipped...I can't believe Phil Karlson released this film with this error. The music leitmotif design adds to the unintentional awfulness of the film... Boone and Hamilton were known for starring in stinkers... God's Gun and The Last Dinosaur are Boone's worst...
I like " Four for Texas " but if you want a terrible Western movie starring Dean Martin try "Texas Across the River". Dean Martin looks bored and seem to have forgotten how to act and just because he we top billed Alan Delon was the real Protagonist. (do not know how it got a IMDB rating of 6.3 )
The women were hot in Texas Across The River though. Which is why I do not put it in the worst western category. Stuff like White Comanche and The Desperados had nothing redeeming about it:
I have a tendency to get the two confused, they're so similar. I don't think anyone was trying to do a good movie when they made them, just trying to earn a fast buck.@@cdeford2
Great selection of bad westerns. To me 'Tickle Me' is not a western. Also 1967's 'The Fastest Guitar Alive' staring Roy Orbison should be on this list.
Not sure I would call it great, if I was being kind I'd say entertaining. Ratings sights didn't like it. I take that with a grain of salt. At time of release I think did OK mainly because of the top notch cast.
Great list of bad films; or is it a bad list of bad films. Some real stinkers in there. And you do not even mention a ton of the bad spaghetti westerns that came out. Best scene if 4 Fot Texas is when Charles Bronson gets it.
Elvis's movie career was always held back by his manager who was more concerned about what was written on the cheque than what was written in the script. The fact that Elvis had any good films was almost a miracle.
Thunder of Guns is a decent movie yes a bit slow at times but still worth watching, as well Four for Texas is a good western comedy, as for the others yeah those are not so good.
I certainly agree about 4 For Texas. Some of my other personal pet hates are Bandolero, Sam Whiskey and Night Passage. Advance to the Rear aka Company of Cowards has two of my favourite stars but is the unfunniest comedy ever.
Young Billy Young had an interesting opening. Even better when the lawman and Young on the run from a rogue posse together... But when they got past that... it sort of morphed into a bad TV episode...

Almost all his movies leant to the lighter side, with a few exceptions. Very formula driven.
