There Will Be Blood owes a lot to The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre, Red River, Giant, and Citizen Kane as it really is like a combination of all 4 of them. It's definitely a masterpiece. Bone Tomahawk is a horror-tinted re-imagining of The Searchers and really is great as well. Kurt Russell has always been at his best in roles like that, such as John Carpenter's The Thing. No Country For Old Men is another film I would add to this list. It kind of kickstarted the whole neo-western trend of the 21st century and the film itself feels like a throwback to Sam Peckinpah's neo-westerns like The Getaway and Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia. It also had shades of John Sturges' Bad Day At Black Rock and again, The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre. In my opinion, No Country For Old Men still hasn't been topped as far as 21st century neo-westerns go.
Along with No Country for Old Men I would have added Old Henry to this list. I like your analysis of There Will Be Blood and Bone Tomahawk - well spotted.
A movie that is hard to place in any genre is The Last Samurai. It stars Tom Cruise as the central character of the story. It combines westerns and Japanese historical drama into a single very good movie. In my opinion, this movie is probably Tom Cruise’s best movie.
I watched one recently with Scott Eastwood called Diablo. A seemingly good man with an alter ego, chasing down a band of Mexicans that took his woman turns out to be a vicious killer. The men that took his woman, turns out to be her brothers trying to rescue her from this horrible monster. Very unusual and unexpected ending.
Some of Travis Mills and Running Wild films need to be on here, like Tales of the Natchez Trace and The Wilderness Road. Westerns set east of the Mississippi in the early 1800s and late 1700s are rare indeed and an untapped source for the Western genera.
I think Cowboys & Aliens was very edgy because of the involvement of space aliens in the story. Imagine James Bond and Indiana Jones together in the movie. I agree about Daniel Craig's choice in the film due to his similarity with the late Steve McQueen.
I'm a little surprised that The Ballad of Buster Scruggs wasn't included here. IMO it definitely qualifies as rare, edgy and unusual (the fact that it's 6 minimovies in one makes it almost unique among movies, not just Westerns). That said, it's good to see movies go outside the norm; if artists don't push edges, who will?
@@famouspeople63My forte is 30s-60s movies, anything more recent I'm not too familiar with. I do follow the Coens though, which is why I watched Buster.
In all honesty these films don't seem so much rare and edgy as typical of the genre these days. If you really wanted to do something rare and edgy for modern Hollywood you'd do a good natured, respectful remake of one of the old Roy Rodgers/Gene Autry style westerns.
You mean the good old, respectful illustrations of what the West actually was. The, keep their heads in the sand and let white men play Native Americans and cast them as always the aggressors.
The Wolf Song ( 1929), falls into the rare and unusual western category. Why? Few people have seen this Victor Fleming ( Gone With The Wind) movie. Which makes it rare: It also features Gary Cooper with curly hair and playing a “Love Them and Leave Them” type: Until he meets Lupe Velez ( playing a VERY different character then her “Mexican Spitfire”). Very different roles for both.
Only seen “For Greater Glory,” “Bone Tomahawk,” & “There Will Be Blood,” heard of “Brokeback Mountain,” “Cowboys & Aliens,” & “The Sisters Brothers,” never even heard of the rest. Want to check out “Dead Man,” “The Claim,” “The Salvation,” & “In a Valley of Violence.” Thanks, Wrangler.
Awesome list!!!! A few movies were going to suggest are on this list - THANKS!!! What??? NO, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"??? or "Abraham Lincoln: Zombie Hunter??? Truly 2 Academy Award Winning rejects.
The Frisco Kid is a whole lot of fun. I love the scene where the Indians are asking the Rabbi if he'd give his knife for the Torah and when he says he has no knife, the entire tribe says in amazement and disbelief, "You have no knife?"
An overlooked little gem that I would put into this category might be And Starring Poncho Villa As Himself with Antonio Banderas. Personally, I think The Claim is friggin' boring. And Brokeback Mountain is not a Western -- just because they wear cowboy hats and ride horses that movie isn't a Western. Yuck. Interesting selection, Wrangler.

I always enjoy your videos of the westerns. You always make a great video. Yes these were on edge 😊😊
Thank you very much!
Face of the fugitive with Fred McMurray... Great early score by Jerry Goldsmith makes this a standout rare one

Four Guns to the Border very steamy western with Rory! a favorite of mine.... he is also great in Raw Edge

I have just watched The Salvation ,it is as good ,probably better than some of the tripe that is being made to-day.

Perhaps in the follow up. Any others come to mind?

Make Roy a black gay chic….and make her lame
Rango was an unusual one, but I liked it.
Only Seen Bone Tomahawk & Cowboys & Aliens. Liked Bone Tomahawk But Was Shocked. Not Easy To Watch.

Thanks for the comment
I think 2010's 'The Warrior's Way' would fit in with these films as well. To me it has a very "Steampunk" look and feel.
So, do you prefer the newer generation of Western genre?
@@famouspeople63 does not matter what era they are from as long as they are.entertaining.
