  • Bloodgood is a highly sought-after classic Japanese maple known for its deep red spring foliage. It features large palmate leaves that maintain a dark maroon color even in shaded areas, transitioning to vibrant fire-engine reds in fall. As a moderate grower, it forms an upright shape, reaching 12 to 14 feet in 15 years. Bloodgood is popular as a main focal point in gardens due to its year-round visual interest and ability to complement greenery with its red hues. Named after its introducer, it's important to note that seedlings from Bloodgood may vary significantly from the original tree, highlighting the value of grafted specimens for consistency. Suitable for zones 5 to 9, Bloodgood thrives in full sun to zone 8 and is exceptionally heat tolerant.

    You guys are doing an incredible job creating good content on JM's. There are videos scattered across TH-cam that are old & some just aren't that informative. Doing a video on the things you have learned through the years growing or from your trips to Japan & stateside nurseries would be great. Thanks again, Erin S.

    Great information. I’ve been looking for a JM that tolerates full sun. I’m going to go with the Bloodgood. One question: can regular pruning keep the the tree from getting too big? My desire is for a medium sized tree (8-10’). Thanks.

    Mom had a lovely little Japanese maple in the front yard of our Va. Beach home though I don't know what variety it was. I have this specie(Bloodgood according to the tag ) in my yard here in Rhode Island and every year I keep forgetting to prune it. Now that it's nearing the end of April I suppose I should wait till next winter before trying to prune.

    I'm currently trying to decide which 3 to plant along a South facing fence line in my yard zone 9, one end won't get sun until 10.30am onwards, the other end sun 8am until 4pm. Could you advise which would be best suited from these Osakazuki, bloodgood, seiryu, Twombly's red sentinel, Acer sieboldianum, sangukaku. Thanks!

Almost all the leaves fall dry and only some very few on the new growth are left but try to fall as well. Is it going to make it through the winter? Can the maple survive without leaves? Thank you for your prompt answer! I am so fond of Maple trees that I bought 3. already. Poor luck. The last one was gorgeous. Two years in a row with beautiful leaves and suddenly, maybe because I spread too much 20/20 to help it with the new leaves, but it died, it is in the process of drying out. The previous one is completely dry but keeps growing taller. I must be missing something!

    • @tarpontime7562
      @tarpontime7562 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ ACEROCKOLLA A. They’ll get some Sun scorch on em until they adapt to it. Mines planted in full sun in zone 9 and the first couple years they’ll get burnt and drop leaves early. Now they’ve kinda adapted and last until fall. Not ideal but I didn’t have a choice to plant in full sun

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zones rate how cold it gets not how hot so it does depend on the heat index more for sun. Typically we recommend late day shade in most zone 9 areas on the east coast. West coast is so diverse in conditions it’s hard to say

    • @motherlandbot6837
      @motherlandbot6837 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bloodgood can be grown as a large bonsai, so yes, you can keep it to medium size as a garden tree. Young specimens routinely grow 10-15" in their spring flush and 5-10" in their mid summer flush. Pruning must be done in late summer or fall. Late winter or spring pruning will occur during sap flow and the tree will 'bleed' badly (Sugar Maples are tapped when the sap rises in late winter for this reason.)
      Cut back just past the growth buds that form in late summer, as sections of stem without terminal growth buds will die back. Try to maintain or accentuate some semblance of the tree's natural mounded and horizontally tiered growth pattern when you prune, as this is very attractive. Many East Asian trees and shrubs have this horizontal branching pattern, but it is relatively rare among Western European and North American trees and shrubs. Traditional bonsai styles are often based on these branch/growth patterns. Compare the growth pattern of most Japanese Maples with our native Red and Sugar Maples, and you'll see the difference immediately.
