Full Story: bit.ly/wENaiv A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip tests his DNA to trace back his African ancestral roots. For the full story: Video by Native Resonance www.nativereson...
Dope! I was born in Guinea-Bissau. I live in New Bedford MA. I am Cape Verdean and a conscious Hip-Hop artist. Salute to you Q-tip and the folks at Okayafrica! Keep connecting the dots!
What do you mean by "all"? If you're talking about black americans that goes without saying. No one that knows anything needs to be told black americans come from Africa
he said his dad is from montserrat which has a high population of people from southern asia so he is probably right about having some asian in him somewhere down the line
Al Person those 2 countries have the highest rates in the region, you are right. But most English and French speaking islands have some East Indian population too. Guadeloupe, just south of Montserrat has a good 15-20% whose ancestors came from Pondicherry / Calcutta from 1854
@Al Person Wrong Dominica is the only island that has Caribe people still in existence. For the commentors who don't know. The State of Texas is larger than England or France?
And people need to understand that zulus were not always zulu if we trace them back they also came from other tribes jst like how the ndebele ,xhosa, swazi came originate from the zulu tribe but know identify as what the are now ...but they know and recognise where they came from though some may deny this but it is obvious to those who are honest and imbrace they lineage
I'm Zulu and I was watching him saying he thought he was Zulu like "aww, no man..." cause he does not look Zulu at all. Glad he found his roots though. It is such an important part of who you are, and empowers you to know what you can do.
+Anele Malinga Yeah- probably because beforehand, the only thing he knew about Africa was the Zulu people. Hence why ATCQ called themselves part of the "Zulu Nation". But the Slave Trade ran predominantly from West Africa, so he is likely to originate there.
Zulu people have their roots in DRC aswell hence why we share surnames with certain tribes from that region "Mbhele" basically we're an assimilation of khoisan and central african tribes
Every black British or Americans always think there are few tribes in africa.the most popular tribes they claim(Zulu, Ashanti, Yoruba, ibo etc). there are lots more tribes in Africa.
@@bolajiaiyegboyin3579could you blame us? Most of us are fed stereotypes of what Western Media shows us. Some, if not most of us are lucky enough to read!
The Jola people just like their Seereer cousins have an ancient and rich culture. They are two of the Senegambia oldest inhabitants. Indeed, these two ethnic groups trace descent to two sisters : Jambooñ (ancestor of the Seereer people) and Agaire (ancestor of the Jola). The legend of Jambooñ and Agaire is well preserved by both groups and well known in the Senegambia region.
It's so interesting what we struggle with finding out what our ancestry is, and reconciling that with what we "want" our ancestry to be. Q-Tip wanted to be Zulu & Asian bad. When they brought him his results and this cultured master musician, I sensed some dissatisfaction from him.
Qtip is crazy laid back. I personally would be proud to hear that. Percentages matter of course, but it only takes one inherited trait from your complex genetics to make you who you are.
+king esseen they only talked about results from 1 grdmother , and ignored his fathers side completely, so no wonder he was disapppointed, they wanted to make it all about Africa and this music tribe
@whiptyme Exactly. People got to remember where Asians migrated from and what their original ancestors looked like too. This was beautiful and so moving. I would love to do this one day.
"Q tip gets swabbed" I can't be the only one to find that ironic😂. Btw, I'm wondering if any africans took this sort of test just for fun. My parents are both somali but I would like to know the story my dna tells. Wouldn't be surprised to know there is some oromo, amhar, or Yemeni somewhere but other than I'd be damn shocked. Just curious.
This is GREAT! More content on the web like this to combat all the other mindless foolishness! Africa! One day I'll be able to go! Q-tip, can we get an album in 2012?
The man playing the instrument and Q-Tip look almost the same. Same facial features, nose shape and head shape basically the only thing different is the slight skin tones, amazing.
we from the same tribe. in Sierra Leone they are called the Limba people. and jammeh the ex president was from that tribe. very hard people. and they like farming. nice to know.
Awwww! I met your mother Q-tip at Sony Wonder! She was so proud of you! I also rang you up at Tower Records but was in such a foul mood I didn't jump over the country and hug you like I wanted to. I actually hope you don't remember my stank attitude.
That is why we need to know more of ourselves before we perish. Buffoonery and negative publicity made us shamed ourselves and confused it with machismo and arrogance. If only everyone can take it, maybe we would see ourselves as whole instead of being self-destructive and ignorant not only to ourselves but to others as well.
Genetics/DNA can't lie! My results have been accurate. The migratory period for the tribe in which I belong is succinct with the groups I have best connected/working with over the years
Not sure what you mean, I just shared some information I know and am appalled they didnt. Just calling them to do some research. Don't know it all, but know what I wrote not least because I live in West Africa and know Joolas.
This video should've been called "Q-tip uses a q-tip"
you have no idea how much i started crackin up at your comment tho

+Samreen Zed Understandably so. I cannot imagine having no knowledge of my roots.
Truth. I was moved myself watching him knowing about himself and where he came from. It is spiritually healing.
Him playing the Akonting and singing really does sound just like blues

Dope! I was staring at his face and guessed he might have roots with the Fula people of Guinea! I got the country right, but tribe wrong lol.
Qtip has a sweet voice
We are all from Africa. one love ☝🏽️
+desertflwrs Yeah!

@Glamorous Taee but SA isn't the most powerful country in the continent, its just popular to you westerners cause of Oprah and Mandela 😂

0:39 i have never been to Africa!!!Q-Tip !!Tribe called Quest!!!God damnit !!!come on Q even 50 cent went there !!!!damn!!im shocked
To go there and to do something about it are two separate things
As a beatmaker...I knew that look...that look you're in your head thinking "is there anyway i can record what he just did? Where's the MPC"😩🔥😭
The woman should've told him they only deal with tracing African DNA. I think he was looking forward to finding out more about his history.
That song was beautiful.
That shirt is dope.
What beautiful music.

god that song made me tear up :3 beautiful
that instrument moved me! the sound of the chords. the beat & rthym was not new to me but moved me deeply all the same.
xti fuerte yes my soul instantly connected
+xti fuerte Absolutely. This instrument is the precursor to the blues in America.
Joola have a very rich culture. They are also proud. They live in the forest where nature is very dense.
Cool but you didn't explain anything about the results or give the full results
Q flows so well over the background beat xD
This is so beautiful.
Love this. ❤
Great content and get well Q-Tip's hand from 11 years ago!
Wonderful!
They look alike! Instrument is so dope how he's playing!😍 Wow
oh yeah...please have him put that down on one of your records. nice.
Q Tip is fine !
I always thought he, the guy that plays Mya’s husband on Girlfriends, and the rapper Maino resemble each other.
Very awesome Discovery and knowing more of self and where we actually come from. It's a beautiful thing indeed.

I see I’m not the only one who respects the irony of it but I just wanted to add my own title... “Qtip uses a Qtip to find out who Qtip is”
basically they are going as far back to find what was the identity of the ancestor on the mother side of the family or the father's side.
Yes mitochondrial DNA traces the female line.
The Joola are mainly in Senegal and some in Guinea-Bissau. Can they please have people who know Africa well!
