I have never heard a singing actor better at melding the organic emotional growth of the character with the written and natural momentum of the music being sung. It IS NOT easily achieved, and she does it so damn flawlessly. It makes me want to both give up in shame of my own mediocre talent and then in the same breath, exult in the notion that humanity can reach this level of, for lack of a better word, profundity. She not only lives up to the legend, she surpasses it every time I listen.
@@user-highbaritone I have often questioned my Elitism in Opera... am I the greatest in my profession? certainly not... then what gives me / us the right to separate the ultra talented from the rest talented artists? I have no answer to that yet, but it would also be enormously unjust if put in reverse, if Maria, dame Joan, dame Elisabeth, Montsy, Birgit, Astrid, Christa etc were placed in the same pot with the rest... Nature is by definition unjust but each person walks his own private Golgotha and quite often if not always the end result depends much more on personal effort than genes and fate
@@LohengrinO again, I could not have written what you have here with such elegance. I have though, for some time, that the greatest singers are always a “one of”. So many people can’t love them all. Actually most one eyed fans certainly can’t. I have to say that that as bread comments of a post I wonder how long it will be before someone writes how much better Callas was. Well, she was, but does that mean that opera shouldn’t exist now. I was lucky that heard so many of these ladies late in their careers, and very early in mine. There were all wonderfully unique and I think they all appreciated what each other could do better. None of them had to look over their shoulders to see who was better because no one was. Again, thank you for what you do. You have enlightened me with so many of the greats. ❤️👌
@@LohengrinO Of course! And the radiance of her artistry is a prime example. I shouldn’t have dragged me into a post meant to gush over Maria. That said, when the question of evaluation of singers arises, and its intrinsic fairness or lack thereof, I’m reminded of a quote from Paul Jackson’s great book Startup at the New Met: “How unjust that in the heavenly hierarchy they say even angels are ranked.”
her Hands had a life of their own... they would take all kind of unnatural shapes and positions like playing a little dance theatre according to her Voice... it is unbelievable to me how multi-layered this Artist was
@@LohengrinO That was so beautifully surmised. One of my mentors, a very spiritual person had a saying that some people are "Not long for this planet." She said that certain creatures bring something extravagant, heart-breakingly beautiful. She said in their time here, they are "homesick for their planet (or other plane, sphere or duality)" and often exit early to return from whence they came. Leaving memories of signs like those other worldly hands.
She really could take an audience through an entire monologue before even opening her mouth to sing. The turmoil in her from :16 to :32 had to be enough homework for Angelina Jolie to study when she was preparing to play Callas. Callas' entrance to Oh! S'io potessi ,with Nicola Rescigno conducting in concert, is another example that truly takes me to another world.
Maria became a vessel, a conduit for Leonora. The role, the music, took her over entirely. At the end, you can see Maria slowly come to the surface again... And this, in a recital - most singers don't become one with the character like this even in a fully staged opera performance. A phenomenal actress, a phenomenal singer.
In an interview she referred to if one is looking what to do, all they have to do is look at score, as the composer has given you everything you need. Wasn’t she blessed to have been given that ability to see it all on the page. ❤️
This concert was the best in the history of opera: the diva, the theatre, the guests, broadcast on TV, etc. Once and again thank you so much for posting with your nice words!
...and while she still had her entire Voice... I say the same thing about her audio live performances... what would we know about Aida if we had not heard her Mexico Aida with del Monaco, Oralia and Taddei? or her Armida or her Lady M or her Vespri Elena or her Puritani Elvira... and God only knows why her Kostanze and Euridice were not recorded... they didnt satisfy her enough to let them fly and destroyed them? or someone went so envious of her achievement that decided to make them disappear

❤DIVINA!!! Τραγουδούσε όχι μόνο με τα χέρια αλλά με κάθε ινα του σώματος της! Αθήνα Ελλαδα
I love that the hands are mentioned. Her hands could definitely talk! She actually uses them very little, but to great effect!

Yessss! Please upload more of La Divina's concerts and recordings. ❤
Let the transcendence of space and time itself begin!
God I love her histrionics. The entire package is everything I have ever wanted in a singer, and yes, a woman herself.

Truly exquisite!
Thank you so much!!!
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Great.......do keep up the good work. 🙂
thanks ❤
Callas and Puccini need both to be celebrated too! An incredible legacy!
For me it is really a shame that we do not have more films where we could have more complete performances of her. So, this one is really pure gold!
