    Awesome build! My dad had a CJ-7 when I was a kid, some of my first memories are riding in it. Inspired me to buy a TJ and my sister bought a JK. Good to see people keeping the old CJs going! I love the AMC V8!

    Beautiful Jeep! I'm working on a YJ with a small block chevy and a th350 mated to the stock np231amc. I just love these old CJ's though. Builds like yours are such an inspiration to me. Nice clean work! Wish I could have a shop like that too haha. Might have to find some of those tires as well. Thanks for sharing!

    Great job on the Restore! Gotta keep these old gems running. I bought mine in college 28 years ago. Starting a 5.3L swap and will need a lot of body work. My current AMC 304 drinks gas. Love the color.

    Now the Thornbirds are seriously bad azz rock tires. Best all terrain type tread on the road still today. They are way better than my Boggers by far on rocks. Mud is a different story as the boggs are mud tires.

    I've got a 81 cj7 renegade. 258 in line 6. I run a Ford np435 and 205 the case. axles are chevy 3/4 ton. 3.5 inch lift bds leafs soa. up on 18x39.5x15 boggers. by far the best mod that made it good is the full width axles. 2nd best mod is a steering box support bar. now there's no frame flex when steering. worked great on a buddies yj also. very cool jeep. black N drap green is killer.

    careful side hilling thats why they put wider axles on them the more u build up the more you build out . use plenty of straps on anything that flexs the front or the springs will recoil and put you right on your head. trust me

      fucking A man. totally know that shit from experience lol. I welded a roller under to a crossmember I added under the rad support. I use the winch cable to hold it down.

    • @mimixownzall
      @mimixownzall 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really the reason why you build out also is because you wind up putting stronger axles which are always wider, not because they think of stability.

    • @Ken19700
      @Ken19700 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pro is that it was originally designed that way. The con is that the wheel bounces towards the thing you are trying to climb over, which makes it harder to do. This is an awesome build. The shackles just popped out at me.

    • @pleasantlakepirate1832
      @pleasantlakepirate1832 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I see now that you already knew they could be either way, I thought maybe you were an older GM guy and thought they were always shackle rear.
      Myself I prefer shackle front for less d.shaft slip and the axle not wanting to walk out during a climb. I don't think either way is better than the other, its all preference

    nice lookin rig i just started my own 77 cj7 with the same drivetrains 304/400/quadratrac I'm wanting to do a spring over suspension also. what brand of soa lift did ya use or is it a homebrew type? it looks really clean any pointers u could give would b great I'm doing a frame off with a fresh steel tub any trouble spots you ran into?

    • @MrChefwede
      @MrChefwede  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nick Cossio Thanks. I used the full traction 5.5" SOA kit. I heard that they stopped making the kit though. If you have a welder you would be better off to just weld on perches instead of the kit anyways. The front axle castor was way off, nearly at 0 degrees, handled like crap. I bought 4 degree shims to get some castor back and it handles way better. Would have been better off to homebrew it in the first place. Get the MORE steering box bracket and get rid of the old crap bracket also a borgeson steering shaft. Dual diaphragm brake booster is an awesome upgrade too. Painless wiring kit was a definite good buy, easy to install. And take it from me don't get the fenderwell headers like I had. Way too noisy, even if you think you like it that way. What size tires you plan on running?

      80 to 100 lbs. bias ply tires N steel rims are crazy heavy. steel for off Rd cuz if it gets bent by a rock you can hammer it back straight and reseal the tire N keep on jeepin on.

      I think I got them from quradtratec but anyone sells them. I believe stock CJ shackle length is 3" center to center and the ones I have are 4" center to center. There is more to choosing shackle length then just adding them for lift. Load up jeepforum on the web and search choosing right shackle length and have a good read.

      jeff ede 1982 CJ-7 with an AMC 360. I have some worn out shackles that will need to be replaced before I ever take it off-road because they are so bent and twisted. Were your shackles like $160 for the front and rear? I found where you can buy just the shackle plates and use your old hardware, my current ones are the same design except for the plate thickness so I am sure it would work fine.

      thanks for watching. the early cj's had narrow trac axles, which mine has. I believe in 1981 they came out with wide trac axles which are 4 inches wider overall than the narrow trac axles. The pictures and videos in the early part of this compilation are before i got 2" wheel spacers on each side(4 inches wider overall, same as wide trac axles). You can see in the last video with spacers installed how much wider it sits. Still though, width to height ratio is overkill on this jeep

      @MrChefwede  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm about $20,000 Canadian into it with a newly rebuilt amc 360 that's not listed in the video. It would be a few thousand cheaper if I was in the states. Shipping is the killer for my project.

    • @MrChefwede
      @MrChefwede  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zach Campbell , It was a kit. Can’t remember what brand it was. Not worth it. Should have just made my own spring over.

      jeff ede ok beacuse we got a 85 cj7 and we want to do a high steer kit and spring over. Or do 4:10 gears because we have those 3:31 factory gears but we haven't noticed till now because we just relized it is a golen stroked 6 so the engine just gets bogged in the snow, if you had to choose what would it be. Thank you!

    • @MrChefwede
      @MrChefwede  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zach Campbell , depends I guess what size tires you plan to run. Then figure your gear ratio out for that size

      Zach Campbell, thanks bud. Figure out what tires you want and google gear ratio calculator. Then figure if you want power or gas mileage

    DUI ignition is an expensive waste of money. Edelbrock air filter won't stop any dirt. I take it this is an off road vehicle? Might want a paper air filter to protect the engine. Never mind, it's a chubby. Won't last 70k miles. Glass packs, are you kidding?
