Been trying to figure out what game this was for years. Was standing alongside pitfighter in a dingy cafe in long street in Cape Town in the 90s. The fact I can remember that as a 42 year old tells you we lived in a golden time.
an underrated game! has similarities to rush n' attack (green beret), ninja warriors, and shinobi - plus those shoot em up stages really help break up the gameplay to keep it from getting monotonous
One of the best game of its genre... Super fun to play. The Megadrive version was so much downgraded, it doesn't do justice to the original game, nor to the Megadrive !
It lacked enough megabytes, I think it was a mere 4 meg cartridge. It needed more megs for the 2 player mode and all that multilayered parallax scrolling.
I stumbled across a couple of seconds of Thunder Fox in a Digital Foundry episode and instantly recognized it. I've been looking for the name of this game for over a decade now, barely remembering anything about it other than it had a mix of sidescrolling, shoot-em-up, and the jet ski stage. I had to check this longplay out. Finally, I know that it wasn't some young kid's fever dream and also that I must've sucked because I didn't know you could just duck and stab that spear boss.
I feel cheated. I loved this game on the Sega Genesis and didn’t recall level 1 the lighting strikes, rain, or being able to use the Jeep! This game was awesome 👏 Happy nostalgia 🥹

The machine then replaced with Contra after several months, then were Tiger Heli, Snow Bros and 1942 if i remember right... those were the times :)
I remember renting this for Genesis not long after it was released, making it all the way to the end boss with next to no lives and no credits left. Of course, I didn't beat it. :( I don't recall ever seeing this in the arcade so I was surprised to see it listed on Mame, and my home town's arcades were always on top of the latest releases(we were a test market for Cyberbots and Darkstalkers 2 to give you an idea). Was this not a common game of theirs?

To me it looks more like it uses the same mechanics as Ninja Warriors from two years earlier, it has the crouching walk and everything, although not the mega widescreen. That was also published by Taito. Namco made Rolling Thunder so I doubt this as a sequel, although a lot of games looked similar at the time. Shinobi, etc.

Don't you think at least one or two of the enemy soldiers would have thought, "You know, I'll take my chances with this air bike"? No presence of mind, I'm telling you.

The Genesis version was marred with slowdown problems. It was due to insufficient memory.

Definitely better than the Mega Drive version. The arcade Thunder Fox has more content and better game speed. MD's port has a sluggish feel.
All i gotta say is thank god for the Taito Legend collections that include Thunder fox in all its arcade glory.
