It’s so crazy to actually hear this game’s soundtrack so clearly, because back in the day it would be drowned out by all the other games in the arcade lol.
This game looks great even today, 30 years later. I think this is one of the greatest games in terms of level design and atmosphere. It reminds me of those disturbing places described by Lovecraft in his stories.
This was 1 of Capcom's most challenging games. After a year, i managed to beat this game on a single credit. They sure don't make games like this anymore.
I just finished this game for the first time this evening. It was and still one of my absolute favorite arcade games as a kid. This really takes me back. ☺️
I used to love watching people play this game at the arcade. I could never make it past the 4th stage. I finally beat this game when I played it on Capcom Classics for my PS2. What a feeling of accomplishment!
This game blew my mind as a kid. I played it at the Roller Rink. So memorable. I couldn't remember the name. I talked to a guy who owns a retro arcade and he knew right away the game I was describing. Takes me back to playing games w roller skates on while eating a slice of pizza 🍕
One of my all time favourite arcade games, this and Wonderboy 2 adding the shopping/upgrade feature just seemed like it added so much at the time but what I really remember was how often I was rolling backwards while playing this game because I was usually at the local roller skating rink on a Saturday morning.
I don't know what run you were watching but it looked hard as hell. I only ever made it passed the ball devil back in the day at my 7-11. Game is brutal.
He did use save states to erase blunders. Any time you hear the music glitching during the run, that's when a state is restored. That's because the FM music chip driver doesn't save the internal state of the emulated sound chip - only the registers, so the notes sound strange until new notes get played in the song.
Late 80's, if I had a quarter, I could always play Black Tiger, at the nearby Villa Roma, through to the end. The arcade console version of Mario Bros. (where you could get a million lives) made a quarter stretch into hours at the local bowling alley. With $5 at 13yo I could have a soda, nacho chips, chili dog and game all day while my mom was working.
I think I am in love with this game... And I had never seen it before. That dark ages feel to it. Very barbaric. The poses the character does at the end of the level though. Reminds me of the Village People a little. Amazing upload! Thank you.
Played in 1989, full game with one coin, no lifes lost. We havent been killing the final dragon, we were farming skeletons to compete for high score. Fast forward to 2001, pc, mame, i still remembered every hidden spot in game. Still playing it ofc, best game ever.
Shit!! This was in an old shed(where the shop stored bags of coal) out the back of a local newsagent when I was a kid. We used to queue for fucking hours to get a shot, 10pence piece in hand, covered in coal dust......lol
Great game, I've Always been amazed by the stoned old clones. Some of them gives you money, some gives time (I really want to know how this last one *works!*), then... there was this sick bastard at 5:22 that was like: _"Here is some advice..."_ _"Toincreaseyourearningsseekhiddensymbolsdiditalkedtofastwellfuckyoubye"_ This is actually the FIRST TIME I can read what he say. -BETMARK-
Brilliant, unparalleled game. Used to play this game a lot in the 80s. I was able to play it again in the mid-90s, thanks to a standalone emulator that seems to have been forgotten by Google, an emulator called btishgar.
my late uncle was a huge video game fanatic. he actually bought the arcade machine of this game from a Rocky's roller skate derby and had it in his basement along w a few other medieval types like Rastan , rygar and Golden Axe. i spent my formative years playing this game. This brings back so many memories.
Que juego más medieval y feudal...el ambiente la música todo...tiene aires de novelas de caballerías..reyes...druidas adivinos..magos..castillos..me huele al rey Arturo.. Lancelot..el mago Merlín...😎👍
This game had a later point where you had to make an INSANELY complex long-jump. One of those, "I made it this far and now I'm eternally stuck" moments in gaming where you wonder if the level designers fucked up.
Are you talking about the jump that is in the stage before the final stage? I know for that one you MUST hold up + jump, or it is impossible to make. I remember I was like the only person as a kid in my local arcade who figured out how to make that jump, and people would pay me tokens to make that jump for them and teach them how to do it.
I used to hate walking to find this the only game a place had. Not because it was bad. It was just hard and I was shit at it and it was definitely the most popular game around the traps at one stage.
My fav arcade game, a port of sorts, came out on the pc engine, but they reskinned it with Journey to the West stuff & called it Sonson 2. It's especially obvious from level 2 & onwards, they didn't even bother to change a bunch of the enemies, and the weapon upgrades are identical, with the exception of them being at the end of a stick. It looks at a children's game at first glance, but is in fact way harder than BT, as you only have 1 life & no continues. Fans of BT should def check it out.
@44:29 how do you make that jump? That's the one that always got me back in my day. no many how times I tried to run at it...whatever. Always ran out of time. Tried it again on mame and still can't make it lol. how do you bloody well do it!!?? :)
I remember I thought this game was too easy until one day I found my "easy" game a lot more difficult. The owner of the cabinet set the difficulty to hardest which made everything more expensive plus some other surprises. Took me many quarters to make it feel easy again. Then one day I saw this game again but it was called Black Dragon and it seemed even harder but that was not seeing the game for more than decade. I used to play only to hear the background music.
i'm confused by something. if you have enough for the level 4 weapon, then why did you buy the level 2 or 3 weapons? and if it's that you can't buy the level 4 until you buy the level 3, why were you putting it off so long?
He is trying to show that he can play with the lowest level weapon, which makes the game hard. There is a point when a weapon is no longer very effective, so he upgrades at that point.
+Rebecca Brown Most people couldn't. I never made it past level 4 (maybe level 5) on this game, even if I blew my entire allowance on Continues. All long arcade games were that way... I knew a guy who could play Gauntlet all day on one quarter. The arcade had a love/hate relationship with him, because they knew the Gauntlet machine wasn't going to make any money that day. On the other hand, he ALWAYS drew a crowd, who would then blow their money trying to get as good as him...
Those are antidote jar. If the man eating plants touch you, you become poisoned and, without antidote, you won't be able to trow daggers. The old man sells them.
You have returned peace and prosperity to our nation. Thank you Parzival
I cried when his last words were “thank you for playing my game”
You're welcome :)
I'm reading the book right now

Pete have you read Ready Player One? If not I highly recommend it
Same here bro
As for me I was 9 when I played this game. (2000)
@@deAndaJake I will check that out.
Capcom classics collection has this game. Look it up sometime!
It’s so crazy to actually hear this game’s soundtrack so clearly, because back in the day it would be drowned out by all the other games in the arcade lol.
Fun fact: This was one of Ernest Cline's, author of Ready Player One, favorite games.
Andy The Red Lantern I didn’t know that until now but thanks for sharing the common knowledge.
that's awesome
thats my favorite game too i didnt know that

@Andy The Red Lantern I came because of rpo only!
This game looks great even today, 30 years later. I think this is one of the greatest games in terms of level design and atmosphere. It reminds me of those disturbing places described by Lovecraft in his stories.
Oh wow, I remember this from my youth! Haven't seen it for over three decades, but the art design has stayed with me.
This was 1 of Capcom's most challenging games. After a year, i managed to beat this game on a single credit. They sure don't make games like this anymore.
TimelordR yup I completed this game in the arcades back in the day with one quarter with practice of coarse.
@@Mosashi_EX same. I love it. Back in that days us kids were really hardcore players. Games were so hard.
To be fair, a lot of kids have a lot of free time in their hands back then pfft
@@BeyondDaX That isn't a statement or a question. Oof.

This is like any early version of Magic Sword!
Funny you should mention that. Magic Sword was the indirect sequel to Black Tiger.
This and Magic Sword are 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The concept behind Fatalis and its varients from Monster Hunter was definitely inspired by this game.

One of the best arcade game 80's!!
Black Dragon and Time Pilot, my go too's when I was a kid!
I remember playing this 8th & 9th grade, i considered it the cutting edge of arcade games and the graphics . Peobably the apex of 80s arcade games.
Wow!!...This was the first game I ever completed with one credit I still remember all the kids from the block surrounding me yes to see me play 🎮🕹️
Used to play this game in college with a buddy of mine, Rick. Excellent game

This game is a straight up CLASSIC and the shop/zenny system was a precursor to Forgotten Worlds(another great game by Capcom)
amazed how big their heads are compared to the hero's. o.o
Seeing this brings back such good memories one of three games I could beat on one quarter this had such a dungeons and dragons theme to it👍❤️🔥
i was never so optimistic as you playing this game.. as soon as shop was available i bought whatever i could as soon as i could
This was an old favorite of mine. If I saw a Black Tiger machine I’d always drop a few zenny into it. 😁

My dad used to play this game for hours on Capcom Collection when I was a kid lmao
best arcade game ever change my mind. Played it so much at the boys club that I could beat it all on 1 quarter no deaths
ghost'n' goblins, Rygar or even Toki are better. This one gets a bit too repetitve after a while.
Can’t compete with your nostalgia, but while I love it I don’t think it’s the best ever. A little repetitive.
Dude thanks for the video. Now I now when the coffe shop ovens.

Capcom is 1 of the greatest video game companies. They been making hits from the 80's to this day.

so question, what do keys and potions do?
