You might think you already know Spot, the robot dog from Boston Dynamics. Maybe you saw a viral video of it opening a door, or dragging a truck, or dancing. But now, this robot has hit a HUGE milestone... Spot got a job!
These robots are now out in the real world doing real work, for fire departments, factories, defunct nuclear power plants like Fukushima, ancient ruins like Pompeii, deep mines, and, more controversially, police departments. You might already be starting to see robot dogs walking around, and even if you’re not, they’re starting to affect your life.
That’s why we went to visit Boston Dynamics. In this video, we put Spot to the test, to show you what it’s really capable of, and how our future could be even better with robot dogs.

Welcome to the joke down low:
What do you get when you cross a dog with a calculator?
A best friend you can count on!
Use “best friend” in a comment to let me know you’re a real one who made it to the end of the description :)
A robot dog saying "Follow me gentlemen" was peak comedy
Honestly one of the best parts 😂
Was that a reference?
So we already have the technology to have a humanoid robot with a diildo to satisfy women and man, we already have all the technologies in hand
I now need a fancy butler robodog
Still laughing about it
11:34 Spot's thinking - "i'll remember this lack of belly rubs in the robot uprising" 🤣
🤣
He was just holding the parcel lmao
Robot uprising? No rather Labrador uprisings
Yeah, I definitely saw Spot looking on thinking, "Why didn't *I* get a lie-down mission?? 😢"
Cleo-hime arriving color matched with Spot, and instinctively petting it and cheering it on with a higher-pitched pet voice, really elevates her story beyond the simple reporting on other channels (:
Plus to the color match!
Cleo hime sama was the best thing I have seen after Cleo's instinct to not pet spot
thank you AI bot
Yeah chicks right.. hehe
Spooky!
I’ve been waiting for this vid for nearly a decade.
Eggo’s are a good cereal brand, You can’t change my mind.
Fancy seeing you here
Ratio
Johnny, you're probably stoked for the new fake A.I. moon landing come 2026. Aren't you?
Almost as long as I've been waiting for your LDS video pt. 2 🙂
ohhh this is the robot that michael reeves taught to pee beer
The one and only
Thinking about it makes me laugh
Robo-cop by day.
Beer pisser by night.
“Spot is a platform for our customers to develop their own payloads for”. Michael is a developer ahead of the curve
When she said developing on spot I kinda expected a sniplet of his video lmao.
"In Pompeii, Spot is inspecting graver robber tunnels for police" made it sound like the robbers bought a Spot to make sure their tunnels were safe 😂😂😂
Looked like they were using a Leica BLK 360 for scanning. Cool to see both pieces of tech in the field.
9:55 Saying "we believe in anti-weaponization" for the robots is like Google saying "Don't Be Evil" (its original motto). We always start out with such noble intent.
Naive to the power of 3
"Here's a super advanced tank with a bunch of sensors and a mounting point for a turret... pweaseeee 🥺 don't put a turret on it mkay?"
All it ends with is the robot with the back-attachment application. Much like the production of a jeep -- just when the military buys in -- they'll freely attach the weaponization to the jeep. So, it doesn't really matter, by the end of the day, if the tools prove usefulness -- any actors (good or bad) will make use of it.
Companies who pledge not to sell robots to certain big spending customers will lose business opportunities to less idealistic competitors.
I think most new technologies in-and-of themselves are neither good nor evil - it's how we use them!
5:26 I was really expecting him to shake all that dirt 😂
That could be cool detail :D
Let's maybe not call it a "him".
LOVE... YOUR... VIDEOS... The level of respect for the clarity of information and showing the viewers all sides of a subject (while keeping it as optimistic or at leats questioning as possible) is INSANE. All I can say is: Never stop making content and we need more Cleos in this world.
I often hear complaints about how news is more and more miserable by the day, especially from older generations. We need more news like this.
That’s an advertisement, not a regular tech video. A disclaimer in the very beginning would be warranted and more respectful to her audience.

its her and the dog twining in black and yellow for me 😂 Cleo I love your channel. always refreshingly optimistic and curious.
Cleo color coordinating her outfit with Spot is exactly why I love her so much 🙂
We have one of these robot dogs at one of the facilities here at GRC. It's used to check on machinery that is too loud for humans to check on while it's running, even with hearing protection. The robot dog can even go up and down stairs lol
Whenever a new video is out from Cleo, you always know its gonna be a good one! Also the matching colours is hilarious :)
Michael Reeves making the "piss bot", was the best add on to Spot lmao
The "Fancy Butler" Spot at the end where he talks is totally like something out of Portal 😂
My robot human keeps asking for a pet obot dog, but I just know all the care (changing the oil, ordering replacement parts, making messes for it to clean up) will all fall on me. Maybe when my human robot is a little older...
The thing to realize is that for *most* inspections tasks it's far cheaper to mount 50 cameras all over the building that will do non-stop monitoring, rather than have 1 super fancy camera walking around, *but* some of my favourite examples where it actually makes sense to use these robots is to handle cases you didn't plan for as a relatively capable 'remote presence' platform. I think this is how a bunch of swiss or austrian hydroelectric plants were planning/thinking of using them. Most of them don't have a constant human presence, and they do have a bunch of monitoring installed although the installations themselves are old and have a lot of old equipment, so when something is wrong a human has to drive there to check it out (with some of them being fairly remote). The idea was that having something like spot in each of those could allow better triaging.
How will cameras tell you if there is a gas leak? How will fixed cameras carry out detailed close up inspections of operating machinery? How will a bunch of fixed camaras locate the exact site of a radiation leak?
Cameras are for general surveillance, not for inspections.
@@enadegheeghaghe6369 I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Optical cameras may not be able to detect a gas leak, but other static sensors can without needing a robot dog.
it's pretty useless as drones can do all those tasks but better.... Your robot can walk over over gravel and navigate through rocks, good....but drones can just FLY over anything.
@@hasrataulakh drones are great indeed as long as you don't need to touch anything (which often indeed is the case). And to be fair, I haven't seen any indoor drone based remote presence solutions, but at the same time drones have gotten significantly better are navigating tight spaces compared to a couple of years ago... so I do think there is potential there.
I love it when Cleo has such a “childlike curiosity & energy” on whatever topic she’s talking about; she seems like such a fun & nice person to be friends with, and probably also an amazing conversationalist.
Keep doing your thing Cleo!
Much love from PR 🇵🇷
Oh how I've missed Huge *if true... very happy to have this back on my screen. Happy New Year Cleo! Thanks for producing the show and hope for continued success.
"It's up to all of us to decide together" ... hahahaha ! Amazing sense of humour 😂
exactly, as if our government won't make the decisions for us. We are no longer represented.
Exactly. About as funny as saying they will not be weaponized.
dont let cleo know what michael reeves did to their robodog
I think you do a fantastic job of presenting these in an easily digestible way. Thank you for being an amazing creator and making TH-cam a better place!
As always, great content! I've been excited to see you grow every since I saw you with Mr. Harris. You are the Yin to his Yang, and you perfectly balance each other out.
Love your videos Cleo. My favorite channel to watch about new things. Thank you!!
So cool! I’m excited to see the possibilities!
Also my dog growled at the TV while watching this so its movements definitely look realistic to an actual dog!
This robot dog reminds of that Black mirror episode lol
That anti-weaponization stance will go out the door when Uncle Sam offers billion dollar contracts
I dunno, DARPA paid for most of their research already. I expect the public stance is so Uncle Sam gets the hint and stops trying.
They are aimed more at safety and commercial applications. They'll be able to stand firm on that stance because if the government wanted to find a way to weaponize something like this then they'll be able to figure it out on their own if they thought it was necessary...
Boston Dynamics is an American company owned by South Korean Hyundai. Prior to being sold to Hyundai, they belonged to Japanese SoftBank, and before that to Google.
It was specifically at Google's insistence that Boston Dynamics got out of military-related research and development. It is hard to see them going back. Although there are all sorts of restrictions on how much Korea can influence the operation of the company, Boston Dynamics is still foreign-owned.
@@coffeegonewrong Uncle Sam already has several robotics contractors that are on par or quickly catching up to Boston Dynamics. Why would they "get the hint and stop trying" when they already have what they want (and can get from other sources with no hassle)? Lol. I love when ignorant people confidently take stances on subjects they clearly know nothing about.
@@Nyx_2142 If the US military has other contractors building it for them instead…. Then wouldn’t that mean no one is asking Boston Dynamics to make killer versions? Possibly that they “Gave up and stopped trying” to convince them to take money to breach their ethics?
You say I don’t understand what I’m talking about while proving my point.
this will never end well
Matching yellow and black fits 🔥
Maybe don't thumbs up when doggo falls.... 🤷🏼♂️
No "general purpose" robots should be weaponized. But they did not pledge that specialized robots should not be weaponized. They're just playing semantic games.
300k 😱😱😱
Also I love the matching outfit with Spot Cleo ❤
I like that you matched your outfit to the robot. It shows how genuinely passionate you are in a subtle way.
i love how her outfit matches Spot's colour it's so cuteee!! 💛🖤
I think you're the first person I've heard say "figuratively" instead of "literally" in 10 years. It almost brings a tear to my eye.
You can't use these 2 words interchangeably. They have opposite meanings.
The only thing that should be bringing a tear to your eye is your own illiteracy. "Figuratively" and "literally" literally have different definitions and uses, and are never used interchangeably. But you look like the type to share whiny boomer memes on Facebook so I guess it fits that you'd whine about language evolving/changing (while being incorrect about what to whine about in the first place).
still have an innate instinct of fear, that my good old robo dog can easily be turned against me 😂 code ain't loyal.
Your real dog is only loyal because you give it food. Otherwise it doesn't give a fk about you either
Not true - I've seen dogs remain loyal under extremely stressful situations.@@SemGabelko
@@SemGabelko These robo dogs can turn against you even if you give them electricity ;) Not the same.
Yes, be afraid. and be ready because it will happen. But probably not by accident!
AP normal for your daily....
Cleo has no idea how I always rewind the Huge, if true intro because its so satisfying to watch
I love this channel, and this series. Please keep it up Cleo! Amazing work as always!
that yellow blazer tho 🔥
It’s not robots that I don’t trust it’s people deploying them and what they program them for.
Spot standing there being jealous of the real dog in the end😂
Excellent video! I'd love to see you dive even deeper into subjects
Awesoooome! 🤘🏽 I’m so happy to witness these things in my lifetime . This was a thing of sci-fi. ✨ Loved the Inspector Gadget bit - I used to love it as a kid in the 80s 😁
"many people are terrified by it"
shut up many people, spot is adorable.
Why you rude to lady? Is because she talk about decade old robot? Why? Tell me now yousomamabeach
@@simonsan5271 spot is adorable :3
@@snowbelltheicewing66 yes, my mistake.
Great video! All of your content is great. Thanks.
Loved the spotted firefighter spot! so on point!
I really like the use cases with factories, mines, and nuclear plants as it really seems those use cases are heavily based in the idea of robots helping humans. However, the military and police use cases for this is appalling and pretty terrifying as those are based in the idea of suppressing humans. The pack mule idea and a more bomb-sniffing variant I think is totally fine, but that in my opinion is an extremely slippery slope and will lead to more human suppressing variants. Unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about that slippery slope. Boston Dynamics might be on board with the right ideals, but the military, police, and greedy corporations who will have access to similar technology very soon will NOT carry those same ideals.
Fortunately "Spot" hasn't learnt to deal with slippery slopes.....yet lol.
But yeah, the CCP was already using them to patrol the streets during covid lockdown to make sure there were no sick and starving people on the streets......Who'd escaped from the apartments they were welded into to look for food rather than starve to death "for the good of the community".
I don't think they were weaponised just fitted with a loud speaker telling people to stay inside. But they were still being used in somewhat of an evil capacity. 🤷♂😕
Since when did the perception of police go from protecting and serving to suppressing? How is surveilling a holed-up murderer a suppression mission? You would deny our military better tools for protecting and defending our country because you think it’s a bad ideal? That’s a pretty misguided understanding of their purpose.
@@johnk6598 there's a very fine line between "protecting" a country and general meddling in politics. Russian internal propaganda has explained the invasion on Ukraine as "protecting" the Russian citizens living in the area. And the US is always sending out missions into the middle east with questionable results. Not to mention alot of conflicts don't have a 'right' and 'wrong' side.
Enabling robotics into military uses causes as much harm as it has potential to do good, if not more. You think that the moment a company starts producing robots with guns, that terrorist organisations and criminals don't immediately have access to them too?
@@johnk6598 Top it up. What would you do if the enemy has the similar robots? Let's say Russia sending waves of robots in the Ukraine. That will be a problem. Not that Russia will do something like that since Russia doesn't value human life. For them human meat is cheap.
@@pranavid Yes - all the more reason we need to be ahead of them in robot technology
Spot - the only best friend that won't chew your shoes, but might just chew your job
Any parts of my job Spot could do, I’d rather let it do.
Side by side shot in yellow, with spot tilting his head? Iconic. Really superb video Cleo! Thanks for some nerdy positivity in this world 🤓
i love you. I just love you and the way you put things out there! Thanks so much for positive tech, cleo!
Aww, Spot is so cute!
10:37 its totally NOT up to all of us. It'll be up to a few execs who will put profit over people like everything else
If only technology can be used without any malicious purposes, mother nature would be so grateful. 😢
Still, spot can in no way replace a living, loving, emotion-full and loyal dog
Would you send your dog into a nuclear power plant to look for radiation leaks?
"Yop, Spot got eyes in his but" - Cleo
oooh, there was a scary episode of Black Mirror where these robot dog like things had hunted down and killed most of the humans....lol, I see that you mentioned it later
I was just thinking, I miss Cleo videos. I hope a new one drops soon! And boom
inspector gadget was one of my favourite cartoons as a kid .. so nice to hear that tune again after 30 years lol
You bought this jacket just for matching the robot
I love how Spot just looks like nothing happend after he was stuck for minutes straight lol
Fantastic quality on your work. Glad to see you've come so far and found your purpose through passion. You must be livid living your dream job every day.
Wonderfully done. Educational and entertaining. A great combo if you can hack it. Clearly Cleo you have mastered it. Thanks so much for this extended look at Spot.
even though it will undoubtedly be replaced in most situations be humanoids in this decade, still an amazing product and fantastic tech, shows a lot of their learnings from Atlas
People said this when the steam engine was invented. People said this when electricity and assembly lines were introduced. People said this when computers came around.
WHY the hell people keep saying this?
Cleo is on another level, first making top-tier videos in Vox and then here, I have waited for a new video for a long time now.
Another upload from my Favorite TH-camr !
Hope Your Channel grows much more and reaches more people
Well, I can't thank you enough for the type of the content that you are making, it just covers the tech world from a different perspective, I also looove ur shorts, however I am not a shorts fan, but I can't miss yours. Plz keep going. Best of luck.
About the robots, I think we're gonna reach a phase that it will be very normal to see them more often in our daily life, helping and doing stuff in an easier faster way, the real problem that regulating the use of them, that will be the hardest part of the deal.
It would be cool if you could make a second channel with longer videos, so we could see more of what you’re doing, we know you’re getting a lot more than 14 minutes worth of video, it would be awesome to be able to see some of the footage that didn’t make it through the editing process
I would design an addon absolutely necessary for the spot platform. I'll call it "tale" with the main action "wagging". It may interfere with the ass cam though😅.
Nah, just stick my camera on the end of it. You can use flow motion to augment the mapping capabilities. Structure from motion video is pretty powerful.
Or just force sensing so it can tell if something is behind it while it wags.
Or just give it a perky tail instead.
wearing that yellow leather jacket to BD for this day of filming was a genius move of coordination
It's so satisfying to see you matching spot. it's flippin adorable
We don't get to decide the future, at least not collectively. It only takes one person or group to escalate, and that's why we can't have nice things.
Love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
I think the airplane is a great analog for what's happening with robot dogs. I suspect in the same way commercial air travel was first scary/entered into responsibly, then luxurified (?) in the 70s and 80s and then weaponized in 2001, and then course corrected as a security measure we might see something similar here. It's a shame that as humans we have a tendency to react, rather than proact. In fact until I saw the video about the return of super sonic travel, I really lamented that we live in the age where pragmatism often eclipses progress. I love this channel.
I'm 65 and the changes I've seen throughout the years is mind blowing. I'm excited to see how these robots are used in the coming decades. Exciting times.
I like that you are matching with spot. If I had a robot dog, I would also want to match it
He’s such a good boi
This series just don't miss, do it?
I ❤ this channel. Informative and entertaining
Robotic K9? I think that's a good way to waste tax payer money for a novel gadget.

"Yes mom it's easy I'll just program it...."
I'm not a fan of these type of video's. They feel more like an advertisement for the company involved instead of it having much journalistic value. To put it bluntly, it feels like a giddy school girl that goes out on a field trip to a company and then gives a presentation about it, based on the information that came from the brochures that the company gave to take home. No real investigation into the pro's and con's of this technology and the company that is selling it to other companies and governments and the moral responsibilities that come with that. Just a simple PR statement where Boston Dynamics states that they do not support the weaponization of their robots. And that's it, no further questioning.
I’ve seen one of these in person for use as atmospheric entertainment at events and it is absolutely terrifying 😬
This technology can be adapted for use by fire departments for search and rescue. This is something I would like to see developed soon to reduce the threat to live firefighters.
Watching a robot trip and fall is one of the most hilarious things to me.
I know NOTHING about fashion... but I love you color syncing Spot.

As a dog-person, that was a very nice ending 😊 Spot is so cool!

I have enjoyed all of your videos since you started, I assumed that the level you're at with your production was unattainable for me as I have been trying to make something with my channel (very poor at this point) but you after watching your interview with Jon Youshaei, you became my new "Best Friend" as I am taking a fresh look at your methods of journalism for inspiration to try something new for myself in my industry. If the military and police can use robot dogs and so avoid putting real dogs in harms way, I'm all for that.
Among all great things about this video, that yellow jacket is a dapper fashion choice!
