  • As the iconic frontman of Pantera, Philip Anselmo sang on six of the Texas metal juggernaut's albums: 1988's self-released offering, 'Power Metal,' plus their five classic major-label LPs, 'Cowboys From Hell,' 'Vulgar Display of Power,' 'Far Beyond Driven,' 'The Great Southern Trendkill' and 'Reinventing the Steel.' We recently talked to Anselmo and got him to rank those six albums, from best to worst. His ranking might surprise you.

    It's almost impossible to do this without setting the parameters...like personal favorite? Most "important"? Commercially? Artistry?
    To me, it comes down to, what records were they the tightest, most creative, heaviest version of themselves doing THEIR sound...and in that light:
    1. Trendkill - Easily their heaviest, most brutal, most experimental while still being super tight, and most creative output. You can find other bands that sound like stuff from the other records...but no one sounds like Trendkill.
    2. Vulgar Display of Power - They found their sound and went all in...this album is essentially Pantera's version of AIC's Dirt. Not in sound comparison...but it was the album where they found their sound stopped trying to be anyone else.
    3. Far Beyond Driven - Debut's at number 1. Is arguably a better collection of songs than Vulgar. Shades of the records that come before and after it.
    4. Reinventing the Steel - In pure riffage...it's up there with any of the albums. GDE, RIMN, and YDMS are easily as intense as anything they put out.
    5. Cowboy's - They got their couple big tunes in but the Judas Priest type vocals, weaker songs, etc just fall short of everything else.

      What I love about Cowboys is its a crossover of phils voice from a full on high range 80s metal vocalist you see on Power Metal to the screams and growls he did for the rest of his career.
      Its best seen on Cemetery Gates. Probably the best Phil had ever sung.

    • @lopolik
      @lopolik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Although Power Metal album overall in the high range as 80s, Cowboys from Hell has Phil's highest notes in screams..
      By far, 1. Shattered (demo) has the highest note B5, and the C6 was disputed, because it's in a distorted scream, hard to say.
      2. Cemetery Gates, The Will To Survive, and Cowboys from Hell - all these songs have A5 highest note.. Which on Power Metal he didn't hit as high as this. But yeah Cowboys is definitely a crossover where he still did the extremely high notes but also did some growls and harsh screams.

    Far beyond... is my favorite. New sound, experimental, a breakthrough, groove metal or whatever that was. And crazy and heavy as shit.

    I love Pantera and all the era-s of the band but Power Metal touched my soul in a different way!

    5. Reinventing the Steel
    6. Power Metal
    I grew up in the early '90s and Pantera was at the center of the best metal to come out of that time. My top two albums of theirs had such an impact on us that continued, shit, continues to this day. I mean, When I joined the Army in 2000 and the wars began, we all had Pantera on repeat during training and most had it for the invasion too, I'm sure. Very important band that had a lasting effect on music and on my generation.
