Legions Imperialis contains two armies, the Legions Astartes and the Solar Auxilia. Let's dive in, set up two balanced forces out of what comes in the box and teach you how to set up and run a basic, introductory game.
Thanks to GW for the complimentary advance copy of the box to review.

Psy-Karens is a terrifying idea. Took me a moment to realise you were saying sicarans
Thanks for going through the rules. Lately, some systems are just too rules heavy and its nice to have someone show examples of how a game is played.
I wish the unit cards had silhouettes of the troops like the old cards.
I think they do on one side. The ones I've seen for terminators anyway
I miss a lot of the old ways of GW. Especially the world art, like weapons, tanks.etc.
I wish they were available. 😂
@@TheJankmaster Im expecting new prints of them as they release new units anyway similar to in 40k. They had the index card set and then as each codex comes out a whole new set of cards for the same faction is being released too so when they have all/most of their planned releases out we might see continuous prints of card decks.
The Luna Wolves slip got me tight in the feels.
*right (not tight)
damn TH-cam won’t let me edit my comment, sorry
31:40 Ogryns and Veletarii squads don't have Chain of Command. They can still charge and march as normal.
17:00 In case anyone's confused. Ash made a mistake with the Sponson count on the Sicarans. Even though there are two heavy bolters on each Sicaran on the models, their profile combines both heavy bolters into one profile, with 2 shots. So instead of 8 dice for HBs in the detachment, it should be just 4 dice.
And what about the HB in the Hull with 2 dice ?
Played our first game yesterday. Really loving the new system and size. This video helped. Came back for a refresh cause alot of rules needed clarification and your video is awesome n clear
Thank you for re-uploading! My left ear thanks you.
Thanks for this, the game seems to be getting a lot of heat on social media for the quality of the infantry... personally I don't get why anyone would think you go smaller models and larger scale expecting soldiers to be even more detailed, i'd be happy if they looked like they used to back in 1992.
I think people have gripes a out the actual production quality, not the level of detail. There have been some very bad pictures roaming around showing bad like blending you night call it between arms and bodies
I'd be happy too but the new ones look worse
Look at the actual pictures. What should be empty space looks like a CAD error where the program tried to 'fix' where the injection molding wouldn't be able to work correctly but then wasn't manually checked afterward.
Uh because small scale miniatures can look great
@@captainferritemate I’ve got some 1992 era marines here and they are shit. Don’t believe anything you hear on the internet about the new ones being shot, They aren’t;t, they’re amazing and a thousand times better than 92.
Thanks for demonstrating how to play I was fuzzy on a few details.
Double the channels, double the fun! Twice more audio content, do not miss this!
Having been building my Emperors Children for a while this video has been great to show me how the game plays.
Can’t wait to get my first game in now
Orders/phases stuff seems pretty interesting, gonna take a while to wrap my head around how activations can interweave.
This is how I play with my friends....alone....
Can confirm, audio issue fixed! Thank you very much, hope it wasn't too annoying.
Excellent demonstration
"Now with two channel audio" my brain thanks you Ash
i enjoyed this. will likely watch again before having a go myself
Just a few bits you got wrong:
You said you have 5 Formations for the Marines - you don't. You have ONE formation and 5 Detachments.
Another thing - and this was quite big - is Cover/Hit Modifer. Models behind structures DO NOT gain Cover or -1 to Hit. They have to be within WHOLLY WITHIN Difficult / Obstructing terrain or Garrisoned to gain the hit mod / cover save. EXCEPT for Knights and Titans which then goes on a % based cover system (25/50%). Page 57.
Yes! Lets gooooo!
Thanks Ash!❤
This was a really good learning video. Thank you
Awesome job ash!
Thanks for the video. So compared to Epic Armagueddon: You cannot keep the initiative; all phase are separated like 40k (move, shoot...), a lot a special rules for weapons vs AC, AP, BP and AA values. Not sure it's more streamline. You can change an order of shooting if you are not in range !? I will try since I already have some nice Armageddon 30k amies.
He does have a Holly from red dwarf vibe in the intro doesnt he. :)
Great tutorial
I think there was a small error in the second round. When you rolle for initiative and had a tie, you re-rolled. But a re-roll is just done in the first round. In all later rounds, the initiative gets swapped if a tie is rolled.
The same in the fifth round.
Thank you very much for making this, I'm happy they released it but irate they so grossly underestimated the demand for it.
LOVE the new intro! No more sound grenade !
Cool as always.
played first game and it was fun. did a few things wrong based on this video but all and all good to go
Good stuff
I really thought about getting this game until I saw the sprues and all the parts and had flash backs of when I assembled all the titans.
Then I locked myself in a room and rocked back and forth on the floor not wanting to think about it again.
I felt simialar emotions , at first i was very enthusiastic and had fond memories of original adeptus titanicus . I imagined that the vehicles would be like the old epic rhinos i owned but no.......they are a nightmare of needless intricacy
very interesting to see the alternating activation and no wound rolls, just hits. I'm a bit unsure on how the wounds and such worked, do all models have 1 wound per base? Or do they still have damage characteristics?
Typically one wound per base, even for the tanks. Super heavies, knights and titans have more
Malcador tank in starter has 2 wounds each, but basically super heavies, titans, heavy flyers, and Knights have more than one wound
Ash..What color and Paint did you use for the Space marines Sons of Horus? Love the videos with the little guys!
Thanks for doing these little show games. Very useful!
Question: for a 3000 point game, how many detachments is that roughly, likely to be? I’m asking because I’m wondering how many order markers to get printed out and painted?
I built this to help me decide what to purchase, the formation builder should give you an idea on the number of detachments, obviously if you add knights and titans you will get there quicker, you will need more if you go infantry heavy, less if you go all in on heavy armour and even less still if you add additional troops and tanks to detachments: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ljd2gtywXRWKpqBwriNuXPsLHFP4UQY_kqnCk2I_lN8/edit?usp=sharing
Totally depends what you take. If you take a larger Titan and then loads of tank detachments you're going to have significantly less than infantry spam.
It will depend but with the requirement of only 30% being allowed to be allies like Titans you're going to need a lot. I'd print extra just to be safe
ThNks I really like these rules great game
x5 1's Ash? Ooof! LOL! It's as painful as watching me and my son playing LOTR! LOL!
Thanks for upload. Immediate impression: Shooting seems generally weak (lots of dice rolled for very minor in-game effect), and Sicarans look REALLY weak, which is a shame because I love the model. After several games, would you agree with my assessment?
I've heard other people say that Ogryns don't have the chain of command rule, so they are not limited by the commander dying?
Correct, they can be issued any order even if they are outside the 10" range of the commander.
MUSTER!
Excellent demonstration! The only thing I noticed is did Ash forget to roll for rally test on the fleeing Leman Russ?
So A) you win I watched the video to let you hook me in. :: shakes fist ::
B) Looks like they removed the Command Value for the initiative roll. What are your thoughts there?
Thanks Ash! You do know I was messing with you in chat? I hope.
Ash, were you blackmailed into using the new music? "Accidentally" upload a 1min black video if so.
This was a great vid though, very informative. Thank you.
May I ask: does the game a set of rules for each marine chapter? or is it just generic marines
There are
Which version of Epic would you prefer to play if there were no outside considerations (viewership, opponents etc)?
Dark hoody and dark background? It nearly made you look like a floating head.
Step one to playing Imperialise, go re-mortgage your house or get another credit card.
Why? Warhammer games are a pretty cheap hobby when you think about it. You can put an army together for most games pretty cheaply and even have things like kill team and warcry for an entry point. Tropical fish are a more expensive hobby
When commander died, couldent orgers advance in to combat with marins after they destryde kratos? Or is it that as soon the commander dies no one can get to close combat if they are not charged?
29:55 are not the Infantry in the building also pulled into that melee due to there Zone of Control, or is there no ZoC in Legions Imperialis? Believe it used to be like a 5mm ZoC - but it's been awhile.
You can enter zone of control by charging, but if you’re not in base contact you are not engaged.
Petition for the return of grunge-rock intro. At least for the bat reps. Reviews etc. could be more mellow.
How was the SOH painted, they look really good
Love this Titanicus and Aeronautica, Seems to Work Hope GW Don't F@@@ @t Up like 40K ETC Again :)
Any idea as to how the guard play ? Ive been looking at legion rules online, but I havent noticed anything for the guard. Will they have different traits?
You mean the Solar Aux? He's playing as them in this game. The imperial guard aren't a thing in LI
So a lascannon can blow through steel but not a guardsman xD makes sense lol.
Also massive armored tanks can't take a punch in close combat 😂
Is this game best described as a miniature, miniature wargame?
Is all damage attached to the weapon type and keywords?
Do those stat cards come in the box?
They do!
Isnt it bad when whole army shuts down when you kill commander in a high leathality game?
Not all of the units lose other orders, the Charonite Ogryn and the Storm Auxilia don't.
Also in larger games you will be bringing 2-3 formations each with their own commander. Plus you can purchase tank commanders depending on formation.
The Auxilia would be busted if they didn't have this limitation
Where do you get the unit cards?
GW sold
Them at launch, hopefully they’ll reprint them!
Bro, not to be rude, but do you wear eyeliner or do you just have beautiful eyes?
Just naturally pretty!
Is this a re upload?
Fixing the audio yes
Disco Ball?
You need to learn how to roll better. Five ones in the Ogryn vs Sicarin. 😅
Never play a game without alternate activation, it’s well boring.
Is imperialis boring?
@@rawntech_7820 no :D
@@rawntech_7820This has Alternating Activations. Its where each playet activates a single unit rather than one player doing their entire army
@@rawntech_7820 but Imperialis has alternate acrivation, so its not boring (according to him).
I don't necessarily think it's boring I just think it's hard to balance. I like the way star wars legion handled unit activation.
I hate that this looks like a good game. Uggghhhh I don’t need to get it. I don’t need to get it….
Great tutorial. I feel GW have dumbed the rules down to much for my tasted. Its a shame as there are some great mechanics in the game. I think there needs to be a s/t stat. A hit then save just isn't a mechanic I like.
The Titan and Aircraft rules for this make it a lot more complex. It needed to be simpler with all of the interconnected systems in order to keep the game moving
I don't like how it has gotten more granular with weapons options and etc instead of just having a firepower rating. So much harder to tell on epic-scale models for WYSIWYG and slows things down.
GW sooooooo missed the mark with LI’s rules. The minis are super. But the rules are nowhere near as good as Epic Armageddon. Close combat especially seems odd that it really is all about the dice only.
Great overview!!!
im like 4 minutes in and i feel like you just skipped past explaining what anything is youre talking about. just assuming people already know what all that is. as i type all this i can feel me retroactively regaining my virginity :/
So just to check, you cant actually make proper armies using the stuff in the box?? Hard pass from me
Does this marketing strategy from GW surprise you?
There is loads more in the box he's just not using it for this skirmish, I think.
I feel cheated! I was expecting a warhound to be used in the game.
Ah, I always figure asymmetric [but still simple] Objectives shows a new game off better. #Disappointed
Bonus pts tho, for pronouncing 'em 'Ohhh-gryn', not 'Awww-gryn'. They're space 'Ogres', not 'Agres'! 👍
