    I have been using the same combo since day one with my Z6. Stunning is right. Color rendition is off the wall. Sharp sharp sharp. The bokeh is outstanding. Weighs nothing. My advice? Buy this lens. I also use Nikon 50 f1.4 non Ai, 24 f2.8 AiS, 85 f1.4 AiS. Old school can't be beat! The D lenses are awesome too. Especially the 180 f2.8D. People have wised up and they are getting hard to find. Keep looking. Good video!

      I compared the 2/85, the 2.5/105 and 2.8/135 on my D700 for astrophotography. With the 2.5/105, sharpness in the conrners sucks as compared to the other two. Even stopped down to the sweet spot.

    Excellent David! Panning blurs with a manual focus lens, great job! I love the shot of the carta bus where you can see the driver. I’ve been meaning to review this lens since February when Heather bought it for me but I haven’t gotten around to it yet and now you have two reviews of it! Both of your reviews are certainly worth watching. I found this review very enjoyable to watch.

      I liked that one too, panning shots with the 105mm are not easy either, I had WAY more culls this time opposed to keepers... seems you can EASILY outrun your subject with a longer lens for some reason. 😬📸

    To my astonishment, Ted Forbes over at "The Art of Photography" rather sniffily declared:
    "AI/AI-S and AI converted Nikkors were designed to project light onto film, not a high resolution electronic sensor. They’re just simply not as sharp as their modern equivalents. I only recommend these if you’re super nostalgic or just being CHEAP. If its the latter you’ll get way better results using FILM".
    This is from the man who, hitherto, has celebrated stuff like Holga, pinhole cameras, box brownies, Lubitel and all that kind of stuff (which hipsters now embrace with a passion). I mean, I know Ted is given to a rather lofty modern art aesthetic (think Warhol; Quant; Bresson; "curating" photo collections; "MOMA", "Tate London" etc), but this statement rather undermines his carefully-curated persona as "art historian"; of tools being merely the servant of art - not the other way around. I used to like watching Ted's Channel, but now I'm wondering whether he's compromising his integrity.

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I was wondering if he was contractually bound to promote a certain brand or some such at that time, it is a little uncharacteristic of him to say something like that. Good observation. 👍📸

    @AntPDC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you David. Like you, I'm an avid fan of these older MF Nikkors and get great results from them on my D810. But the Nikon Z System worries me with regard to MF Nikkors. For instance, how does the FTZ adapter (or the one you were using here) control the lens' automatic diaphragm lever so that it stops down to the aperture you (manually) chose? Have you used an AF-D lens on your Z6 yet? How does that work given that AF is lost using these lenses on Z Nikons?

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The auto diaphragm lever is not in play with the plain adapter and you choose aperture manually on the lens. On the FTZ adapter, lenses that are chipped can be controlled by the camera. It works really well actually. The camera calculates exposure based on the histogram so it doesn’t need to know where the aperture is to meter. It is really handy to be honest.

    • @AntPDC
      @AntPDC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidsaylors Thank you. Isn't the viewfinder awfully dark when trying to compose the shot when the lens is at f/8, as here?

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not that I can tell. It is representative of the exposure. So if the image is going to be dark, it will look dark. This is a problem when it comes to long exposures as it is trying to give you an accurate preview, but it just can’t get it perfect like that. As long as the shutter is faster than about 1 second, the display is pretty accurate though.

    When I was looking for something in the 100mm range, this Nikon was one of the lenses I considered, but ultimately wound up buying the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 which I've really enjoyed using. Both the Nikon and the Tokina get great reviews (including yours) on TH-cam, but I'd love to see a video that compares the two against each other in one video. My guess is that the photo quality would be about the same, making it come down to how important autofocus and macro capability - and maybe price are to the individual.

    Hi David,
    I just wanted to let you know that those zone focus markers are not applicable on crop sensor cameras, only on those with full-frame sensors.

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you explain why this is? The plain of focus on the sensor is exactly the same. The only thing that changed is the angle of view due to smaller sensor size, the distance to the subject is exactly the same regardless of sensor size.

    • @globalfunseeker6733
      @globalfunseeker6733 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @David Saylors I am not a photographic guru, but I suppose the crop factor plays a major role in determining what is in and out of focus. There is an abundance of treads on photographic websites/forums that discuss just this-how the differences between the two different sensor types affect depth of field.
      I tested it myself, on my D7200 and Nikon 35mm 1.4 Ais, using hyperfocal software. When I set the specs. to the above-mentioned equipment, the focus zones were way off. When I changed the camera setting to D800, which has a full-frame sensor, the focus lines/zones matched up correctly, as they would when using a film camera/full-frame camera.
      It must be the crop factor. I can’t think of what else it could be.

    • @globalfunseeker6733
      @globalfunseeker6733 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidsaylors David, visit this page, www.photopills.com/calculators/dof/
      Select D7200 for camera, 35mm for lens, f4 for aperture, and 10ft. for distance. Look at the Dof Near Limit and Dof Far Limit.
      Then, change the camera setting to D800 and you'll see those figures change. That confirms it, it has to be the sensor type.

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes these things defy normal logic. It just doesnt make sense to me that if the lens was focused at 10 feet on a D810 then unmounted and mounted on a D500 and none of the settings were changed, that it would still be focused at 10 feet. This makes my brain hurt🥴 Thank you for raising this up to the surface. I appreciate it! 👍📸

    • @globalfunseeker6733
      @globalfunseeker6733 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidsaylors David, if you set the focus point to 10ft it will be the same for both sensor types; this will not change. What changes is the depth of field.
      With a crop sensor, the DoF Near Limit is 8.36 ft. and DoF Far Limit is 10.45 ft. 10.45 minus 8.36 gives you a total depth of field of 2.09 ft.
      With a full-frame sensor, the DoF Near Limit is 7.72 ft. and DoF Far Limit is 14.19 ft. 14.19 minus 7.72 gives you a total depth of field of 6.47ft, which is over three times as much.
      A full frame sensor will always give you a greater depth of field, irrespective of where the lens is focused.

    Hey David, I already bought the D780 so won’t be going to mirrorless anytime soon. However I’m curious whether it’s better or just different shooting the ais lenses like the 105mm 2.5 on z6 compared to DSLR. I saw another video from another you tuber who said that the z cameras can’t meter properly with the ais lenses because there is no aperture coupling via the adapters. What’s your take on that? I am loving the d780 but still curious about what it would be like to shoot my old manual lenses on the z system. Thanks !

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have not had a problem Z6 getting a good exposure, I just ride the histogram and run it based on that alone for metering, that way it doesn’t matter what the metering is, kinda like shooting in manual but with the ability of knowing if the exposure is right or not. It really is simple, to be honest. I thought it would be a problem, but it has not been yet. 👍📸

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  ปีที่แล้ว

      No I have not. I searched for the ships and they are no longer on eBay like they once were. I guess due to the fact that Nikon is moving to the Z mount now and these chips are designed for the F mount. Too bad as it did help with exif data and it gave aperture control to some of the lenses... It was a cool little device.

      We have a pixel pepper in here! We all know that if you need those photos that bad that you can get them EASIER with fancy new tech, but it can be done with these too. Have you, literally, not seen the famous image captured with of these lenses? 😂 I dont have to prove it, the lens already has 😉🤷🏻‍♂️ I do get your point though, people have become obsessed with ultra detailed irises in portraits. I understand you want them in focus, but most photos take it way too far with the whole “is it sharp” thing. Thank you!👍📸

      Once you get into the convenience of the mirrorless system brings to the table, mainly the EVF , smaller footprint, and IBIS... it was an easy choice for me. If you are open to other systems, I really like the XT3 for my general shooting camera, it has the side flipping screen, not like the new XT4 though, but it kinda kicks out to the side so you don’t have to lead down on the ground to get low angle photos. Works like a charm.

    I just checked eBay for this lens. They aren't getting any cheaper and the 2.5 is getting harder and harder to find. Treasure what you have. I don't expect the mirrorless cameras and lenses to take the world by surprise like they predicted either.

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, BUT, it will need to have the mode in the camera called “Non CPU lens” set to the 105mm and f2.5 values. Once you do that the D850 will record the lens info in the metadata file. It will not autofocus but will give you aperture control from the command wheel on the camera if I remember right. It will make beautiful photos. Give it a shot!

Nah, I would rather buy 10,000 acres in Montana or somewhere actually...anyway enough of my clowning around, that old lens isn't bad at all, sometimes on certain subjects it's nice not to have the razor sharpness of modern glass..I wish Nikon would go back to the built in metal lens hood ( now you have to buy a plastic hood after dropping 100's or 1000's on a lens! ) Stay safe and God Bless you and the family!!!!!!!!!!

    I have this lens, but while I agree that this is an incredible lens, it is not a lens that is suitable for photographing movement. I think many of your photos in the video have missed focus, and also seems to be overexposed, giving a rather flat rendition of color and depth. You pointed out correctly that this is a great lens for portrait, as demonstrated by numerous National Geographic photos including of course the famous "Afghanistan Girl", but you did not show any portrait photos in this video. Sorry just the fact, not wanting to be negative.

    • @davidsaylors
      @davidsaylors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You see, this is the down side to TH-cam. I do cull some photos, but most of the time, it is because I have multiples of the same image or the quantity does fit the video or what have you. They are not polished/retouched and only the perfect photos from the day. I feel that gives the viewer a disservice in the end, because they think this lens only produces perfect images because that is all the ever see in review videos. No street photog alive could go out and get that many random photos that were 100% bangers, to think that they do is preposterous. Not trying to be negative.
