Time code is kind of old school and no longer necessary with modern editing suites (i.e. Davinci Resolve). With modern NL editing it's possible (if not desirable) to sync video using the audio. I've produced a great number of videos ever since 1995 and in those days time code was a necessity. Overall a great video Matt, and as a new Z8 owner I appreciate the over view of the video configuration menu. Keep up the great work young man!
I have to say Matt, compared to other folks on TH-cam who seem to think they need to be loud and showy, you are an absolute delight to listen to and watch. Your voice and approach is calm, natural and well paced. So many times I have given up on those other videos, but in your case I watched to the very end. I am a Z8 user and like you, more of a photographer than a videographer, but wanting to learn and explore more of the video capabilities of my camera. Although I am very comfortable with my photo settings, I have been struggling a bit with which settings to apply in video mode, particularly the focus and tracking modes. This was extremely helpful and I look forward to seeing more of your videos in that regard. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. I am also a photographer that is venturing into video. This info saves me a lot of trial and error. I will be watching again with my Z8 in hand.
Good timing !! Bought a Mini 4 Pro 3 days ago. I've had the Z9 for nearly 2 years now and never branched out into video so your presentation is welcomed. Now to put it all to use ! Thanks Matt and by the way....Snowies are starting to show up here in Alberta and much earlier than last year !! Cheers
Well done Matt! I know a little about video and how it works. I just don’t have the experience with video editing and have not made to time to dig into video production. I, like yourself, consider myself a photographer. Video opens a lot more opportunity for expression of what we love to do. Appreciate your sharing of video knowhow. You’ve inspired me to dig into a bit more! Thanks!!!❤
Thank you so much! I completely agree-video really does open up new ways to tell the stories we love capturing through photography. The editing side can seem a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get into it, it becomes another creative tool to bring your vision to life. I’m glad to hear the video inspired you to explore it more! Let me know if you have any questions along the way. Happy creating!
Great video Matt, I have been waiting for this one. I have been wanting to do some videos with my Z9 and my Z6ii and this is really going to help me. I took a ton of notes and I will be rewatching with my cameras in hand. Now all I have to do is learn how to do some basic editing. Almost time to head for the mainland to photograph the Shorties, we have 3 of them in Nanaimo this year as well. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge!!
Thank you so much! I'm thrilled the video was helpful for you, especially with the Z9 and Z6ii. Basic editing can really elevate your videos, so I’m sure you’ll have a lot of fun with it! Short-eared owls are such beautiful subjects-I'm hoping to get over to the mainland too, perhaps I will see you there! And 3 in Nanaimo? That’s fantastic news! I wonder if there are some at Cowichan Bay too...?
@@MattShannonPhoto I have heard that there is Shorties at Cowichan Bay and also at Panama Flats in Victoria. There was also a rumor that there was one at the Englishman River as well. A couple of friends in Victoria have posted images from Panama Flats. Another friend was at Brunswick Point on Wednesday and said there was a few Owls there but the tide was a way out and the Owls stayed out near the water, he ran into another photographer that told him there was also Owls at Boundary Bay.
Really helpful. I'm another still image photographer that is venturing into video. It certainly provides a great opportunity to improve story telling around your images.
Great video Matt ! Patiently waiting for this and u came thru in style ! Your style and pace of instruction so easy to follow ! Hopefully see u on one of your outings . Keep up your great effort and work
Thank you! These videos are challenging for me to make. It’s easy to get lost in all the decisions required to make video look good. With photography, you can focus on specific topics like 'night photography,' 'long exposure,' or 'macro,' and build from there. Video, on the other hand, has a lot of technical and creative choices to make just to hit record and get quality results. Thanks for watching!
I’m assuming you don’t use an ND filter on your Nikon when filming since you have to switch between video and photo, and you control the exposure with the aperture, but keeping the shutter speed at 1/250 for 120fps. Is that correct? I’m always wondering about that, since I don’t want to use ND filters for my photos, but it’d be fine for videos (and using the same camera for both). Thanks for the video, very informative!
@@mztales you are correct! I should have mentioned that. I’ll sometimes drop my ISO down below 64 to allow my aperture to remain open for a nice shallow dof. Great question thank you.
Excellent info. I will be watching this over and over! I have a lot to learn! Quick dumb question. Which button do you program to toggle between FX and DX? Also, do you know if these videos can be edited using IMovie on my MacBook Pro for things like trimming the length, etc. Thanks!
Thank you! Very helpful video. Can you also make a video about the editing? I mean about 8k 60fps (color grading, crop etc). If you can of course. Thank you again. 😊
I have a question. I have my bank set up for still photography. I’m using all four of them and when I go to the video mode and go to my banks, they’re the same as what I use for still photography. So does the camera share the banks between video and still photography or they separate?

Thanks for watching! There is a lot to unpack here since these modern cameras have so many options.
Comment for the algorithm. More please!
You are too kind, thank you! Cheers
It's amazing what camera's can do now! 8K RAW, amazing.

Thanks you for this great video. Just bought a Z8 and this video was really helpful in setting my camera. Subscribed to your channel
This was a good one Matt, have adjusted my Z9 according to your recommendations, so it remains to try it out.

My wife walked in and said "when did NAT GEO start a channel on youtube?"
What a compliment!! I call it MATT GEO 😂.
