My friends dad is a cardiologist, his best friend has a masters in psychology. That dude once told my friend "the secret about psychology is that 1/4 of the graduates will be a good therapist, and 3/4 of them need a good therapist!"

"You have to earn their trust". Yes! I was misdiagnosed and prescribed meds that made me feel lifeless. I needed to learn coping mechanisms, not drugs.

Asks the psychiatrists, mostly gets answers from the self-diagnosing patients. Aah, Reddit…

I mean, yeah. They kinda... can't if they want to be on the safe side. Yeah they could scrub the post of identifying details, but it's still a risk for breaking confidentiality

The best medical professionals will follow their patient's lead and offer guidance where necessary. Some patients are informed about their own mental health shit, and they know themselves and their mental health way better than the psychiatrist does a lot of the time. The provider is the subject matter expert, but the patient is the expert in their own experience. On both sides: trust, but verify.

Was diagnosed by family as being " a little depressed " told my psychiatrist after I got Baker acted for trying to kill myself all my symptoms and experiences and said " I think I have Bipolar disorder it feels so much more then depression " and he agreed now I'm medicated and stable
Self diagnosing is fine as long as it's on the path to a full diagnosis, cause you gotta start from somewhere

Exactly. Another angle is- why would someone go to a psychiatrist if they don’t think anything is wrong with them? Especially in the age of the internet and expensive medical bills, you’re going to google things as long as you can before you pay for anything. I think the key is having an open mind and accepting the help/expertise you’re paying for (but coming in not looking for help can also be a sign of things too)

I was reading about DID to an ex friend of mine, and she started acting like she had it a few days later, and told people I diagnosed her with it. I was 15 and just reading an article about someone who had it.

I was that patient. I thought I had ADHD and talked to my therapist about it, who suggested to me that it might be autism. We didn't get to far though, because we fell into a bad disagreement about something else and I stopped seeing her. So when I saw another therapist, I suggested the possibility of ADHD/ASD again, but he was very condescending and denied all my suggestions vehemently. When I got my current therapist, I suggested ADHD again, but had given up on the autism idea. She immediately agreed to test me for both. I did the ADHD ones and nothing came out of it, but she literally took one look at my forms and history (my dad is a very obvious undiagnosed autistic) and gave me an Aspergers diagnosis. When I talked about it with my old doc, he asked if there was anything he could do against me getting the diagnosis, because he thought I was still faking it. Frick that guy. I love my new therapist. Getting my diagnosis made me get back in touch with my dad, and I hope I can convince him and his partner to get my younger halfsibling diagnosed, or atleast have him grow up with the knowledge that other people won't always think the same way that he does.

I'm fighting for a diagnosis, not because i want a label, but because i "need" one. My mental problems keep me from full-time work, everyone who knows me understands this. Yet, on paper i am healthy and unemployed, so i'm perpetually on the edge of losing my unemployment benefits. I'm running out of things to try and inevitably fail at to prove that i am trying. An official diagnosis could get me a lot more room to actually fix my issues before being forced into things i can't do because of my issues. But, no one wants to give me an official document saying i'm not fit for work just yet, and it's gonna cause me to end up on the street one of these days...

Getting a therapist might help because they'll either help you work through it, or give you the papers you need

    • @nyanbinary1717
      @nyanbinary1717 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

So sorry this is happening to you. I agree that getting a therapist might help--even if, in your state/country, a therapist isn't allowed to give you a specific diagnosis, they could refer you to a psychiatrist who would help and the therapist could share information that could assist in diagnosis. If nothing else, therapy will offer you support in your struggle. Many therapists have sliding scale fees if your insurance won't pay.

My parents didn't think there was anything wrong with me. Welp, 8 years later and I'm diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder, moderate depression and ASD, and the only reason I've been diagnosed is because I researched and pushed my doctors

My doctor refused to believe i had adhd , took self medicating to get her to believe. Now i have a therapist and have been diagnoses woth cptsd which is honestly the worst one of my things. But that was from me learning some more stuff about it and we went through the list and yea .. I scored pretty high on that list. So less yes i am give me thing and more couls this be a blanket term to say and give a word to what i feel

"You're Google search doesn't equal my degree" Even if true, I find it very patronizing, and "professionals" are not omniscient been beyond any mistake, they can be very negligent & incompetent. I always ask a second or third opinion when I have bad gut feelings, even my dad whose a doctor recomends that.

    >intrusive thoughts rabbithole leads me to ocd
    >suggest ocd to a professional
    >she asks me about other symptoms
    >too nervous to say its wrong
    >get dxed with OCD.
    >8 years later, seeing a new therapist

    >"guess not."

I think I get it now. I have always hated the stigma against self diagnosis because of my personal experience. I was a very curious and self aware child with access to my moms psychology textbooks and dsmv. I had all but one symptom of panic attacks and diagnosed myself in 6th grade. It didn’t occur to me that others that were self diagnosing weren’t actually using the proper diagnostic criteria. Still hate the stigma though. We’ve lived with ourselves for however many years before we are able to seek treatment. These doctors basically have to pay catch up, know that they are getting enough information from us to make the proper diagnosis when the answers are inside us and we just don’t know. We know something ya wrong but they’re the ones with the tools to do something about it. Also in the US we have to get a good idea of what’s eating us with before seeking treatment to even attempt to get the right treatment. Self diagnosis to an extent is unavoidable and often necessary. But that’s obviously different than walking in and acting like the doctor is an idiot.

Kinda, diagnosed my dad and brother with ADHD, Autism and RAFID, before I even started my psychiatry course in uni.
I am a special needs teacher, so I figured it be handy to begin able to help kids, that flew under the radar to get diagnosis.
Some are just really good at masking and struggle.

The opposite of what you expect is what you get and its best when coming to mental disorders for the ones who have degrees and are older are not always right and may have the text written through their profession lenses

I hope these doctors are not like your regular GP's. I performed self diagnosis over the past 54 years. In all cases concerning problems at hand, my self diagnosis was correct. In all those cases, the doctor involved said that I was completely wrong, and did so until tests such as x-rays, proved me to be completely right. They did everything they could to look anywhere else other than looking at what I had said was the cause of the problem at hand. That is enormously frustrating.

If you're looking for a therapist who doesn't just listen but helps you with coping and problem solving then ask to switch therapists. I did just that and it helped me exponentially to the point I no longer needed meds. when I moved to a different state with my now husband I had been given the opportunity to describe what I wish to accomplish from my time there with therapy and whatnot. so I was given an appropriate therapist based on my criteria.

  • @fluffyraichu9706

I normally support self diagnoses as long as you do enough research and you don’t go around saying that you for sure have it, as suspecting something is the first step to legit diagnosis but some of these are too far-

I really wish some of these people would at the very least....explain what these acronyms of disorders are...because "BPMD not BPD" does literally nothing for me. BPD could mean borderline personality disorder...or bipolar disorder....though usually borderline. So.......yeah I dunno. Like yeah we've got Google but it'd be nice to at least tell us what these acronyms stand for. Apparently BPMD is bipolar mood disorder. Also when people say BPD, more often than not they mean borderline personality disorder.
