Hi Steven, been following these religiously and love the content every single time. especially the more psychological ones, so insightful, always keen to see who will be joining you next (teasers at the end of a podcast could work and build up anticipation? although the surprises are fun too!) Would gladly come see one of these live! (in UK i'm assuming?)
@TheDiaryOfACEO: I don't understand your introduction (you always say "I hope nobody is listening but if you are, please keep this (knowledge) to yourself"). Why would you hope that "nobody is listening", and why would we "keep this (knowledge) to ourselves"?! Does anybody understand this introduction or it's only me who finds it really weird/confusing? haha
Imagine a world in which a majority of psychiatrists were this brilliant, compassionate, insightful, and connected to others? He is a true light, thank you both!
We've created a world where it doesn't make sense for psychiatrists to develop this kind of full understanding and insight (though the compassion should be ideal either way), for better or worse, but I do think MANY therapists and psychologists would benefit from studying his work and advising.
Yes he is very good indeed, even under rated. He is on par with Jordan Peterson, but doesnt get the credit he deserves, because he's english. Ronnie O' Sullivan credits Peters with much of his sucess for the last few years.
The chimp is the ancient primal reactive instinctual passions. As cortical thought developed they surfaced as emotional stories which formed the feeling self. In humans the chimp brain can build fanatasies and believe delusions that are often detrimental to survival and well being.
This really made me see the light during a really dark day, it's been 2 months after I broke up and I'm constantly going through highs and lows asking my self why am I feeling this way even though I've been the one who ended it. Thank you Steven for sharing your personal story with us, I'm now more aware of my feelings and think I can get through this with less self judgment.
If anyone reads this, a good habit I manifested years ago was to never have a bad day, there will be moments or instances where your day may be bad, but moments after or when you get home if anyone asks just simply say my day was good! and smile more
“It’s not the fear of failure, it’s fear of not being able to deal with the consequences of failure”. Spot on! When I ‘fail’ at something, especially at work, I fear the consequences of my line manager’s next move, since I feel (there’s that ‘chimp’!) that he/she will take over the situation: “ _I_ am now going to make a decision on _your_ mistake! ” My ‘chimp’ takes over and thinks, ‘Oh no, my line manager’s going to do something bad to me!’, fight, flight, or freeze! Prof Steve Peters is genius! I am currently reading the book and never has a book hit the spot as accurately as this one! Now I know why I have felt vulnerable in spite of my intelligence.
This is a nice way of saying Know Yourself which encompasses Life's journey and is reflected in your own relationship with all. The way of the Will. If you can hear, hear.🙏
Time stamp 42:30 Wow. This may be the single thing that I will use to drag myself out of my years long heartbreak downward spiral…. As also, Stephen asks the questions we are all wanting answers to. I really loved, and needed this DOAC. Thank you 🙏
I read Steve Peters' book, 'The Chimp Paradox' some years ago and the lessons still resonate and have stayed with me ever since, he's a genius and his teachings are so important... I feel I understand myself so much more from learning these important lessons about our brains, it's fascinating stuff. I will be, however, purchasing his new book as I wasn't aware he'd written this so thank you Mr Bartlett for bringing Steve to your podcast, you're contribution towards your fellow man & woman is remarkable so a huge thanks from a fan of your work.
It is such a pleasure to listen to Prof. Steve Peters talk about his subject with certainty and detail. It has a calming effect on me as I learn how the human brain machinery works. Thank you very much!
You can hear the empathy and kindness in Prof. Steve's voice when he speaks. This hour & 15 min interview honestly felt like 30 minutes-it was a really enjoyable and insightful convo. Looking forward to listening to your 2nd (more recent) interview together!
When planning my week ahead, I always look forward to your Monday podcast as one of the highlights. I sometimes use it as a reward for completing some of my dreaded tasks and I prefer to watch it on TH-cam than Spotify. The expressions, gestures, transparency, vulnerability, all make for an enriching experience. Thanks for making this happen.
He’s really good Steven. These podcasts are really helping me. I run my own business and also play golf. When I play golf I have ‘unmanageable thoughts’. Thank you Steven - you deserve every success. Dal ati (keep going), Iestyn from 🏴
I always start my Monday morning listening to your pod while working out. This was one of the most insightful conversations yet and definitely the one I've taken the most away from. Thank you! ❤
I listen to Diary of a CEO frequently, I’m a subscriber and I also search for it when I want to listen to something thought provoking. Dr Steve Peters is the perfect person to have on this podcast, his Book The Chimp Paradox is brilliant. Thanks Steven Bartlett for continuing your great work.
Only a quarter of the way through the chimp paradox. This has totally change the way I address my anxiety. I reccomend it to anyone at any stage in there life.
Only 20 minutes in but so much of this is resonating that it could be one of the most impactful conversations I’ve ever heard! All types of emotion are being triggered by this and I will have to delve into this mans work following this. Great pod! 👍
Wow, great interview and what a man, Prof Steve Peters. There are amazing people in every walk of life and for those who dedicate and are passionate, and can then bring this to the masses, to be actionable and accessible, total respect and gratitude 🙏
Loved that analogy he made about our baseline being those values (integrity/honesty/service etc) we choose being who we are, and just that the chimp/computer gets in the way. Brilliant 👏🏽 👏🏽
I'm just finishing listening to the Chimp Paradox audiobook. It really is amazing. I used to think of myself as being a duality of a constructive and destructive self, but I knew it was too much of a simplistic model. The model of the human, chimp and computer is much better. The idea of harmonising with the chimp and not trying to ever overpower it is groundbreaking. I need to practise coordinating with it and finding ways to fulfil its needs. The "million pound question" was also a great insight for me. I'm going to have to read The Chimp Paradox multiple times to absorb the information.
😊 I'm smiling like the proverbial "Cheshire Cat " after watching this podcast this morning! Thank you so much. What an incredible start to the day & week😊 Thank you Prof. Peters, thank you Mr Bartlett & thank you to everyone involved in creating these fantastic podcasts. This one has really given me lots to think about & consider.🤗 wishing everyone a wonderful week 🤗
More episodes with experts like this. I suppose there are the people who challenge your beliefs because they are so successful and then the people who challenge your beliefs with expertise. A great balance between the heroes and the sages
I been listening to your podcast for a minute now. This one was the one I needed to hear in the place that I’m currently at with myself. Thank you Steve for pushing out amazing insights on important topics! What a refresher 🙌🏼
It’s taken me roughly 20+ episodes to warm up to Steven, initially something felt disingenuous or ‘salesy’ …however, I’m realizing he’s a top rate interviewer, who does his research and creates insightful and curiosity based conversations. I’ve become quite a fan.
I have heard tonnes about The Chimp Paradox but have never gotten around to reading it. Watching this video has made me realise that the help it could give far outweighs the time commitment it may take.
Loved this episode and it came at a great time. I liken his chimp brain metaphor to the wounded child model where every emotion/maladaptive behavior you exhibit in adulthood was potentially a survival mechanism developed in childhood that can be reconciled once you realize the narrative/behavior is no longer useful to you now.
I record a video of myself when im most human for myself in moments when im taken over by chimp brain. Im still amazed how well it works. My nervous system will reset within few minutes even if im in freeze mode it will drag me out to the safe place feom where i can be more aware what is happening. Sometimes we just need few moment of awareness in the day to look feom the distance at everything. I i keep going back to the emotional state i go to someone usually body worker who i regulated well and spending am hour wih such a human will regulate my body for longer. Sometimes its enough to hold someones hand for 10 minutes to travel inside to completely different area in your brain 😊
Thank you both for a thrilling conversation that delivered great value. It was fascinating to listen/watch you both delve into and discuss different situations/circumstances/conditions we face and what the neuroscience is behind it. Finding out more about our neuroscience always blows my mind! 😊🔥
Well was about to start watching this on the plane home but did not have enough time left, got home and sat down and watched. Very pleased I did very well worth the watching and makes so much sense to me. Looked out the books to read and hope to see some more of your interviews, if they are as good as this one going to get hooked. Thank you.
Very educational podcast Steven. I love neuroscience and how it helps you logically deal with yourself and others. My favourite topic to talk about. Thank you for sharing this.
Oh my word! We used to say. I am ruled by the Head or ruled by the Heart. I have always been a person ruled by the head. This is very similar to what is been said here. The heart being The Monkey brain. This was an excellent podcast. Many Thanks Guys.
What an amazing clever man, and you and your teams ability Steven to get amazing interviews with theses amazing people, just wow, I’d love to meet you one day Steven just to have chance for a chat, it’s a shame I’m that man in a Council house with no means ... hat off to you mate as you keep me positive.. keep doing what you all do,, it’s amazing mate 👏🙏👍
Thank you Steve for this amazing video. This was extremely helpful for me and I am definitely gonna keep referring back to this video and would be reading his books.
What a cracking interview, I've just listened to it twice. Two of my fave people giving their thoughts and insights to try and make the world a better place by tackling mental health head on. It's great stuff.
It's been really helpful to put perspective on my fight flight freeze response to situation and not take the discomfort of the internal response personally. I can see I need to make friends with my chimp a part because my self esteem gets lowered each time I feel like I've mess up, each time I feel rejection from the people around me reinforces I'm not likeable to others which I know occurred from my early years template as a young child.
Interesting to listen to Steve Peters put his advice into practice. Came across this video as have literally just finished his Chimp Paradox audiobook. Hopefully, his new one will be on Audible too to preorder.

I like to think of the chimp as the inner child, and we must parent our inner child daily without judgement.
I like this way of thinking much more. It’s easier to digest for me.
Often we must complete the tick box list of parenting tasks that our parents didn't complete
The chimp is the ancient primal reactive instinctual passions. As cortical thought developed they surfaced as emotional stories which formed the feeling self. In humans the chimp brain can build fanatasies and believe delusions that are often detrimental to survival and well being.
Yes I like this way of thinking, it seams it may be more effective , thank you 😊 ❤
It literally is the inner ape though. The older portion of our brain.

In the "old days" the Chimp was called mega ego or super ego. Non the less its always great to listen to Mr Peters. Great video.
Okay, I will definately watch this again! I have never ever understood more about myself than after this podcast.
The best podcast I've ever watched.
An absolute joy to listen the podcast while at the gym. Works pretty well on the mind and the body!

Wow what an episode, I’m sure this conversation will help so many people as well
Thank you so much for this. You have no idea how much your content has helped me with my personal development💖
Thank you Steve for this amazing video. This was extremely helpful for me and I am definitely gonna keep referring back to this video and would be reading his books.
Possibly the best and definitely the most useful of your podcasts I’ve listened to - thank you
Just bought the book. I am only a couple pages in and I have a greater understanding of my owm brain.
Would love to see Steve Peters, Ekhart Tolle speak, and Steven speak!

I really look forward to these podcasts every Monday!
I have waited for this podcast for the last 10 years. Thank you
How I wish I could afford this man to help me help myself HEAL and FORGIVE MYSELF
Ste Peters is an amazing person! Amazing content! So logical and practical and such an approachable method!
Great video - much appreciated. As a late diagnosed ADHD women, I would love to know if the chimp model can work well with the neurological differences ADHDers have. Our challenges with inattentiveness: impulsivity: inertia and our (often) deeply emotional state of being, seems to indicate our chimps are louder, stronger and more in control than within NT people (definitely more mischievous). After years of inner work and spiritual advancement, I do well with my emotional wellness. However; action taking, planning and forming good habits remains consistently challenging. This is thee best podcast ever !! Thank u so soo much for this podcast really informative 😭❤🙇♂️
I really liked this episode. Watch it over and over.

Excellent podcast. So much valuable information.
Brilliant. I've been meaning to read The Chimp Paradox for a while now, going to get the audio book. Great episode!
I learned a lot today about my brain :) very cool! Thank you for bringing this wonderful and much needed guest to us. Cheers!
A book (and maybe future guest?) that relates a lot to this is The Inner Game of Tennis, by Tim Gallwey
LOVE THIS EPISODE!! I love them all, I just really love this one 😆 thank you Steven! 🙌🏻
Just listened to this interview on Spotify but thought I need to watch this one aswell. Thank you 🙏
Brilliant perspectives! What a great expert! Will buy the book 🎉
Loving the pods Steven not sure about his Darwin Chip...keep it simple you're either a Bee or a Wasp and thanks for no ad 😇
I’d like to have a chat with this guy, have dinner with Gershwin and maybe watch Rembrandt sketch…. Genius 🥇
Just a quick suggestion: if you are going to do a USA tour again, try reaching out to Marsha Linehan who developed dialectic behavior therapy which is used by many famous people
I love this podcast, my second time listening to it. ❤
Absolutely buzzing for this bro! I suggested this in the comments about a 6/7 weeks ago haha! This guy is elite! Great work mate.
Thanks Jack - Enjoy!
What a fantastic human this man is!! I've just purchased both books to read on my holiday!! Thanks ❤
Amazing. So much resonance. Just bought the book 😎
Is there anyone that can talk to me like this guy? I’d fooking love it x
I think this model is very helpful. For some reason, Barney Fife, from Andy Griffith show, popped in my head when I thought of my chimp….so I’ve named him Barney….it makes conversations that much more fun. He always has good intentions but when he’s involved things can often go awry. 😂
Excellent 👌🏻 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻
