I turned 10 the day before July 4th 1976, Our Bicentennial. We were taught that story before the school year ended. I've never forgotten & it instilled in me a tremendous love for Our Country that's never waivered, it's actually gotten stronger over the past 7+ years! Our National Anthem ALWAYS gives me goosebumps & I tear up thinking about what happened that night at Ft. Henry. Every public school, private school & charter school should teach that to ALL OF OUR CHILDREN & until they do, EVERY parent, grandparent, Aunt, Uncle or family friend should be teaching it to them. They should know what this Country represents, what it took, why it is so special & that people ALL OVER THE WORLD wants to come here & NO OTHER COUNTRY can say that!!! This is WHY WE THE PEOPLE HAVE TO FIGHT TO SAVE AMERICA, UNITED AS 1, WE ARE AMERICANS, THIS IS OUR COUNTRY & WE MUST NEVER FORGET, BE PROUD OF WHAT THEY GAVE US & REMEMBER: "I'D RATHER DIE ON MY FEET THAN LIVE ON MY KNEES!!! I have ancestors who fought on both sides of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Kaepernick didn't know his history. He claimed it was racist. He is wrong.
This is some of the historical background leading up to the "offending" verse in the Star Spangled Banner:
    • During the Revolution, the British enlisted the help of slaves by offering them freedom
    • During the War Of 1812, the British once again enlisted the help of slaves by offering them freedom. These were the slaves Francis Scott Key was referring to in the "Star Spangled Banner".
Slaves who helped the British are known as the "Black Loyalists" during the Revolution, and as the "Black Refugees" in the War of 1812.
Most of my living family members are descendants of Black Loyalists from the Revolutionary War. In 1783 they were evacuated to Nova Scotia Canada.
The risks they took were huge since the punishment from being recaptured was vicious and brutal. Tories were treated harshly too, some tarred and feathered, others lynched.
Francis Scott Key made this reference in the Star Spangled Banner stating as much.
"No refuge could save the hireling [mercenaries] and slave [Black Refugees] From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave".
That's how things worked back then..."no refuge" for mercenaries or traitors.
Ignorant Kaep supporters pointed to this stanza as Colin Kaepernick's reason for kneeling. But being dumb azzes, Kaep's supporters didn't understand the historical context of the verse.

That story always brings tears to my eyes, tears of pride. Our anthem and those lyrics are the core of our American spirit, and our natural rebellious nature, unique to we Americans. It stems from those inspiring words spoken by Francis Scott Key: "we would rather die on our feet, than live on our knees." Freedom, Liberty, Bravery, and standing up against tyranny is in our history, our culture, our spirit, it's in our DNA. Those men fighting to hold up that flag knew exactly what was at stake, the freedom of our American nation. Thank you for posting this video.

all branches of the military knows this, that if u allow the flag/colors to touch the ground, it meant defeat/surrender. the exact same mentality of our forefathers. they knew exactly what it meant for that flag to ever touch the ground. fast forward today, the democrats will spit, stomp, & burn our flag maliciously without hesitation. yet lavish on the freedom our forefather's blood bravely shed for.

I always hate that we never sing more than the first verse because the first verse ends in a question. We never here the answer to the question "is our flag still there". Here's all the verses to the song with the answer. 😄
The Star Spangled Banner (Defense of Fort M'Henry)
O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
’Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - “In God is our trust,”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

It's a powerful story and who knows if it's 100% correct but does that really matter?
You guys fought for your freedom and you should be proud over your flag and your anthem - both very beautiful
    Cheers and stay strong

I understand your skepticism anything historical it should be looked at with a bit of that, but to put your mind at ease I'm a descendant of Francis Scott Key, The person who negotiated for the freedom of those prisoners and who wrote The Star-Spangled banner I promise you it's all true.
      What f****** legends

Oh but I agree, but I have seen people claiming the story is fake or exaggerated.
For me it's a strong story and a beautiful anthem and I don't care if the story is 100% true or 10% true
It is a story that can unite and make you as american proud of your ancestors.
Sweden never really had to fight for freedom so my pride for my country is a bit different but still important I think.
Salute to you and your ancestor!!!
