I was finishing my doctorate at ND at that time, and I could not speak over a whisper for a week.. And that was on top of ND winning the football National Championship not long before..... Thank you, Notre Dame, for the memories.
What an afternoon! I was 15, watching at home -- in Indiana -- and my best friend was watching this game at his house. A few minutes after it ended, he came over, and I immediately asked excitedly, _"Did you see that Norte Dame-UCLA game?"_ With puzzling lethargy, he responded "Yeah" -- as though it were just another UCLA win. Then he continued, "All but last few minutes." That explained his lethargy -- he figured it _had_ been just another UCLA win! "Then you don't know!" I said all wide eyed. "Know what?" _"Notre Dame won!"_ He couldn't believe that. Nobody who left with the Bruins up by 11 with three and a half minutes remaining would have believed that.
I was a huge Bruins fan back then and I was 12 at the time and I used to think that nobody could beat them, that just the way I use to think , unfortunately they lost but give Notre Dame credit they was a great team, for you it was a joyous time but for me was it was very painful and it still is painful to this day.
@@kennethstanley9462 Your team had nine national titles to bask in at that point, and 10 a season and a half later. And yet, Bill Walton -- who had two titles, two player of the year awards, and an 86-4 record at UCLA -- has also said he has not and will never get over what happened at Notre Dame that day. I guess, the bigger they are the harder they fall.
@@brianarbenz1329 you're absolutely right the bigger they are the harder they fall. It wasn't no disrespect to Notre Dame that they lost to, like I said Notre Dame was great team and I give them credit. The Bruins lost to North Carolina State in the final 4 that year so it's proves that they wasn't invincible.
Huh.... they were handily beaten for 9/10 of the game and did not lead until about a minute to go. UCLA somehow failed to score in the final 3 minutes. Ref made a horrible offensive foul call on Wilkes.... Walton took funny odd twisting fallaway shot when he could easily have laid it in in last seconds. Seems UCLA tried hard to blow this game.... and succeeded.
I long ago became an admirer of Bill Walton. RIP, Bill. You were such a fine person! 😢

I was 9 and remember it well. Great victory.
