Ok man...seriously...you not having your shite together is what makes your videos so likeable. Thanks man. You use many great elements that I often overlook to use. Keep it up homeboy!
Dude can you go over your vocal chain to get those awesome vocal sounds, and how you get your guitar tones? Or is there some way I can reach out? Im struggling hard to get a vox sounds like that
I wish my screen recorded during the vocals because in the original cut I show it 🙃 basically it’s Slates VMR. The chain is: New York Pre driven to distortion > 1176 Style Compressor driven a good bit > Neve style EQ with low end cut and slight mid boost > distress or style compressor to slam the Vox > 1/16th note slap back delay
As a beginner, I’d love a video that explains this technique and how to achieve it. I’m very interested in finding a building new vocal chains and love the sound of this one.

Thank you so much! Typically I’ll have an idea in my head if something small and I’ll build off of that. In this video silt was mostly just playing around
Lmfao, I just like to be tidy. I'm a firm believer that your workspace is a reflection of your mind. So, if I keep it clean, it's easier to clean. Or maybe I do have a cleaner in the closet 🤫
I don’t really aim to have it at a certain level, I just make sure that the loudest part of what I’m doing isn’t clipping. I tend to keep things on the lower side so I don’t risk clipping a good take, and then I make up that gain in processing
It’s an automated filter sweep. Here’s how to do it: 1. Put an EQ on the master channel (or bus) 2. Set a high cut to around 1k 3. In automation, over your desired period of time, increase the high cut filter frequency
I’m mostly self taught. I’ve worked in a few studios in the past and had a few pointers, but I mostly figured this all out on my own from TH-cam, reading, and an insane amount of hours dedicated to learning.
i have a question can you explain what does the ''black di'' tone is using regardless of amp, cabs and OD? i was looking for that kind of sound in digital, or is just NO amp and CAB, fuzz ?
I would say the best way to go about getting this tone from scratch would be a direct DI signal, add a preamp plugin and overdrive it on max, use EQ to sculpt and cut low end. Should get you there
@@RafaelRodriguezOlivares I’d recommend the Arturia Minilab 3, you get the best of both worlds. I have friends who have that and they believe it’s the best mini controller out there
It's called a filter sweep. I'm automating an overall high pass filter on the master EQ. It starts fairly low, and then through automation and time it progressively rolls into higher frequencies.

What a rad song😂 this would actually be a hit in this country.
Can you show how you did that effect at the very beginning, when it went from low volume to loud
beautiful song.😊
Really great job on the song, so fun to see the process! Ended up sounding very wallows-esque!
That’s what I was thinking, definitely a wallows inspired song. Thank you!
so good, seriously the mixes are perfection
You’re too kind, thank you!
Such a great song! I just had a friend come over and he loved my short song all thanks to your tips and tricks! Learning a lot from you!
That’s so great to hear, thank you so much!

You're making a difference, one video at a time.
It sounds amazing !!
Can you make a video about how to mix voice as this
dude what a banger. But show us how you got those vocal and guitar sounds!! :)
Omg!! What is this vocal chain 😭
I wish my screen recorded during the vocals because in the original cut I show it 🙃 basically it’s Slates VMR. Man I’m trying to get that rhythm guitar tone. Can you give me any pointers on what you’re using as far as VST’s and settings ect..
Beautiful ❤🔥
you did a great groove man, so fast, do an other indie song please, cheers from mexico
Subscribed - this is the best video I've found to get me unstuck on exploring this genre
That means alot to hear, thank you for being apart of this!
What is the chain for the vocals!!! very very veryyy nice song bro!!!
Hell yeah dude! I love watching your videos. You're such a huge inspiration

@@TrevBarnes Just booked something w/ you, thank you!
Awesome, looking forward to our chat!
This is amazing. Do you come up with the chords randomly while playing around on the guitar or do you have them in your head from before?
Thank you so much! Typically I’ll have an idea in my head if something small and I’ll build off of that. In this video silt was mostly just playing around
@@TrevBarnes Thank you!
The tidiness of the room made me instantly suspicious.
I even considered you had locked up the cleaning lady in that closet.

great video man, keep up the good work. really like the indie songs!
I'm glad you like them, thank you so much!
whats the scale for your guitar solo? IT SOUNDS GREAT!
All minor pentatonic my friend
Great video man! Very talented :)
Thanks a ton, I appreciate it!
Nice job on the song!
Thanks a ton!
what vst or midi pack are your drums? they sound great
Such a good vid! So happy I subscribed
I’m happy you subscribed as well, thank you!
This is so cool!!! What microphone do u use for the vocals?
Thank you so much! It's one of the most affordable and accessible condenser mics on the market, the Audio Technica AT2020
hey subscribed is done
Underrated video 🤘🏻
Appreciate it!
Mixing in mono: this is the way.
This is the way
The beat at the beginning is Hannah Montana bro 😭😭😭😭
hell yeah
How did you get those drum fills through midi?!? 🔥
Hey there! Just plated them on my midi keyboard.
when you record vocals and guitars do you aim to have the gain at a certain level or do you just work on it in the gain staging/mixing stage?
I don’t really aim to have it at a certain level, I just make sure that the loudest part of what I’m doing isn’t clipping. I tend to keep things on the lower side so I don’t risk clipping a good take, and then I make up that gain in processing
👍🎹🎻🎸🎺🎤
Are you using EZDrummer for the Smashed Indie Kit?
Yes, I'm using their "Tight Room Kit" pack that comes with EZD3. I 100% recommend it, it's been one of my favorite packs for nearly everything I do.
What was that fade thing you did in the beginning for the intro?
It’s called an EQ filter sweep. Basically, you automate the low cut to fill in over a few bars.
what are the chords for the initial guitar part?
How did you do the transition in the intro for the guitar?
It's an automated EQ frequency sweep. So as time goes on, the high frequency sweeps higher to create a "coming up out of the water" sound
What drum plug in is that?
EZ Drummer 3
anyone know how he did the intro portion with the guitar riff and chords?
It’s an automated filter sweep. Here’s how to do it:
1. Put an EQ on the master channel (or bus)
2. Set a high cut to around 1k
3. In automation, over your desired period of time, increase the high cut filter frequency
@ thank you for the fast reply! Do you have any videos covering any of these techniques. I’m new to logic and I like the way you teach
How did you learn to mix and master songs?
I’m mostly self taught. I’ve worked in a few studios in the past and had a few pointers, but I mostly figured this all out on my own from TH-cam, reading, and an insane amount of hours dedicated to learning.
Could you make an entry level tutorial on how to get started?
Hey how do you get the smashed indie kit is that on logic already?
It’s a preset I made with EZDrummer 3
this might be wallows
i am wallows. always have been. have you ever seen me and wallows in the same room? exactly
i have a question can you explain what does the ''black di'' tone is using regardless of amp, cabs and OD? i was looking for that kind of sound in digital, or is just NO amp and CAB, fuzz ?
I would say the best way to go about getting this tone from scratch would be a direct DI signal, add a preamp plugin and overdrive it on max, use EQ to sculpt and cut low end. Should get you there
@@TrevBarnes thanks a lot trev, so avoid using a CAB and using preamp Saturation is the basis of this kind of tone, am I right?
which drums are those? I can't find them on logic!
These drums are a custom preset I made with EZDrummer 3's Tight Room Pack.
your vocals kinda reminded me of wallows for a sec
That was definitely the vibe for this one. Actually filming a Wallows video right now lol
Please Bro, make a tutotrial on how to make music like the trio band called "WILD"
I’ll check it out!
Can somebody tell me what kind of machine is he hitting for the percussion?
sure thing, it’s a more microkey. 10/10 I don’t recommend, it sucks lol
@@TrevBarnesthank you man! Would you recommend Drum pad: Native instruments Maschine Mikro Mk3 for doing that?
@@RafaelRodriguezOlivares I’d recommend the Arturia Minilab 3, you get the best of both worlds. I have friends who have that and they believe it’s the best mini controller out there
Shrek moment
Accidentally in love vibe right?
There should be a way to unload other drums on the ezdrummer. So it wont waste ram
There is, just was too lazy to do it in the video lol
What's the name of the intro effect you put on this?
It's called a filter sweep. I'm automating an overall high pass filter on the master EQ. It starts fairly low, and then through automation and time it progressively rolls into higher frequencies.
@@TrevBarnes Thank you! Awesome video too :)
let us get the vocal preset😭🙏🏾
No way...get your own. Just kidding, as soon as I figure out how to share a preset, I'll send you a link lol
