  • I was asked to make another video like the 24 playing Chopin's Preludes, so here it is, 12 playing Chopin's op. 10 Etudes. Timing below:
00:00 - Vera Gornostaeva and Rodion Shchedrin
    00:07 - 1 - Gyorgy Cziffra
    01:24 - 2 - Vitaly Margulis (I cheated with this one)
    02:58 - 3 - Youri Egorov
    06:51 - 4 - HJ Lim
    08:37 - 5 - Rosa Tamarkina
    10:17 - 6 - Daniil Trifonov
    14:14 - 7 - Francis Plante
    14:54 - 8 - Grigory Sokolov (1967)
    17:05 - 9 - Andrei Gavrilov
    19:00 - 10 - Sviatoslav Richter
    20:48 - 11 - Evgeni Bozhanov
    23:06 - 12 - Rudolf Kerer
The original videos look better and don't have sync problems, but I did fix the pitch in 5 and 12

It's horrible, Chopin doesn't need a cocomposer, he knew what he was doing. If a pianist doesn't like what Chopin wrote, it's easy: write your music and play it as you wish.

Many thanks ADGO for this most informative compilation. With pleasure I watched Vitaly Margulis playing..what a great virtuoso he was. ;-)
But let me tell you one thing: I am not able to get in all these different pianists and to listen to so many different interpretations. Actually I prefer dealing with the music itself and looking into the score. It's not so distracting for me!

Composers have written and musicians have played pain and love and sadness and joy, but who has composed or played vitriol and what could it sound like? So what is the musical or emotional value of some of those comments?
Where is the understanding of the "why" of the performers? If you have seen Richter's profound life-changing sadness ("my mother left and was to fetch me later; she didn't come for four years"), you can see and understand why he plays as he does, and understand why each pianist responds differently to Chopin's own emotions, and how it is the combination that makes each performance unique.
But also, these are etudes, and there is naturally going to be an emphasis on technical skills!

    • @jennyjang5894
      @jennyjang5894 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

10, #4 is a mess -- too fast and sloppy. Slower, cleaner, clearer and more even would be SO much more enjoyable. Loads of missed notes, really uneven volume on notes that should make a smooth line. And the audienve certainly didn't erupt into applause at the end either ...

Richter was always looking upward, to the ceiling, and around , Richter was. Probably was asked to do so by the camera person since the video performance looked like it was without an audience.
By looking up ward and seemingly appearing to be trying to find the Musical muse to keep him inspired, the camera person probably believed it would give Richter a different aura as a performer, so I believe that behavior was requested of Richter.
Personally, I am not attracted to performers who get their bodies involved in the process of performing on the piano. I prefer those who can control not only their facial features from grimaces, lips pursing, swaying back and forth on the bench as if they were on a boat at sea, but altogether an acting out of the music as if they were compelled to do so.
However such is my personal likes and but certainly not to take anything away from an artist's stupendous musical virtuosity or artistry in any video or live recorded performance.
This variety of expression is part of our natural human composition and we all have to embrace the uniqueness of each performer as a gift from the ALMIGHTY.

His wrists ligaments were damaged but still continued to perform at the highest level. He frequently played the piano with a large leather wristband to support his wrist.

Rudolf Kehrer was born in 1923 a year before Lenin died, so there is no way he could have performed before Lenin. He was likely playing someone else in a movie. Maybe Isai Dobrovein. The chap with the moustache was probably playing Maxim Gorky. The woman, Krupskaya, Lenin's wife. My guess is that this is when Lenin and Gorky met in Switzerland during their exile.

No.11 looks as if he's been reading Francois Couperin, who advised harpsichordists to turn and smirk at the audience every few seconds. No.2 is plainly playing some totally different piece from the soundtrack

    • @ADGO

haha :) Bozhanov probably read the same Couperin instruction :) I mentioned in the description that I 'cheated' with number 2 -- I couldn't find a video I liked so I overlayed Margulis's audio on a video of him playing something else.

The op. 25 recording landscape is quite different from op. 10.
While no complete op. 10 set is uniformly at or near the top,
Sokolov's op. 25 pretty much dominates the field.

Well, with the exception of Bozhanov none of these were actually top notch. Trifonov and Sokolov did very well though, and there was some interesting voicing in Margulis' op. 10/2 (but others have done that way better - check Sarah Daneshpour). The rest was a very mixed bag (Cziffra: yikes! and Planté: seriously!?).
In all fairness I'm comparing these renditions with recordings without video. But it's hard to believe that these are the best available filmed performances.

    • @ADGO
