What a magnificent reaction! I did not know the background to this song and now you have encouraged me to pay attention and listen properly. Thank you.

Jakub Orlinski has a different approach to this song when compared to many other singers. He sets the notes long which gives him more possibilities of creating the sound of shivering and makes the lyrics easier to understand. Anyway, he is shivering when needed without exaggeration... Most singers "cut" the ends of the notes to give the sense of shivering but he does not... at least minimises it as much as possible. What I like in Jakub is his innovative approach to what he does. He is not afraid of trying new ways to express his emotions. He wants to show us something different without copying others. And of course, his voice is so beautiful and natural without any unneeded traits you can find in most typically operatic singers. He sings for everyone, not only for opera lovers.

@@BangkokVoiceCoach Yeah he is pretty good (yeah he's elite, and everyone wants him to sing at their stage). You cant teach this, most men will never reach these notes, especially with this angelic tone. I dont think even Dimash could match Jakub's powerful angelic tone. Also I hear you about the "more teeth rattling, more shivering" kind of performance, but I think that would play it dangerously close to "over-singing" or over-acting. Its a fine, fine performance like this.

Klaus Nomi was the first artist I heard sing this exquisite composition by Purcell. Thank you for presenting such a gem - a beautiful surprise in the middle of the night! Great joy for an insomniac living in Chicago.

Love your analysis of this Divine Male.
I sent 2 emails of Max Riebl singing this aria taken from youtube (rehearsal with ensemble and performance with piano at different venue.
    So many beautiful singers.

Joseph, thanks for the emails. Poor Max, dying so young. I really like his voice. It’s big and very sustained. I had never heard of him, but he died in 1991 so it’s long ago.

@@BangkokVoiceCoach William, Max died in 2022. He also had that masculine trait in his voice, beauty, simplicity, naturalness and flexibility of style...

Dimash would be able to sing it better. 😉 He could even start at the original C3 (it's originally a bass aria) and end up at Jakob's Eb5 or even an Eb6. I would so love to hear him sing this.

it's really interesting to hear the different interpretations - lately I've seen Gerard Lesne, and for me he feels like closer to the character itself, worth checking his version as well.
great reaction, thanks for that! ^^

I liked your reaction very much. I’ve seen this clip many times before, and enjoyed hearing your perspective and interesting stories. My favorite version was sung by Andreas Scholl, but while Orlinski doesn’t sing it with as much power behind his voice I agree that it isn’t necessary for a song about shivering. 😉💕

Marvellous!! I was first introduced to this song by my friend the bass Neal Davies. It works really well for a low male singer too

This song forms part of the soundtrack of the movie "The wolf of Wall Street" when the Leonardo di Caprio first hits the Qaaludes drug - apparently these drugs may you feel very cold. Don't know the name of the singer in the soundtrack though

Jakub Józef Orliński does not sing about the freezing cold in a literal sense - he sings about the freezing cold of the universe, he addresses the One who is out there somewhere. This is a moving statement: I don't want to live, I don't have the strength not to even want to live, I don't have the strength to talk to You, I just want to return to the lowness - to the nothingness of eternal snow. I want nothing, really nothing. I definitely want to go to the low, to the eternal low. There is no despair in this statement - there is clear awareness that we came from eternal ice and will return to eternal ice. And there is the quintessence of suffering in this song: a very direct call to God - let me freeze to death again. I won't freeze myself to death. There is a force that forced me to rise from the beds of everlasting snow and that has the power and right to return me to everlasting snow. I don't have the strength to do anything, let me die. Sung with determination, without getting emotional.
