A lost dog wanders through the jungle. In the distance, a lion sees him and whispers: "I'm going to eat him, I have never seen anything like that before." The lion then began to approach the dog in a threatening manner. When the dog realized this, he panicked, but as he tried to run away, he saw a bone nearby, and he got the idea to speak out loud. "Lion meat is delicious!" The lion suddenly stopped and said: "Wow, this guy is stronger than he looks, I better go while I can." A monkey was watching this from the tree. Apparently, the monkey thought that if he told the lion, he would get something in return. Then the monkey told the lion the truth, and the lion got angry and said: "Go on my back, and I'll take you with me." And he began to run after the dog. When the dog saw this, he realized what had happened and began to panic even more. Then he had another idea, and he yelled: "Where the hell is that monkey! I told him to bring another lion an hour ago!"
There's a statue of Patton and his dog at the Patton Museum at Chiriaco Summit. There's an iconic photo of the dog lying next to Pattons travel chest after he died.
Please don't forget President Harding's dog "Laddie Boy". Laddie is immortalized in bronze along Harding in Rapid City, South Dakota, as part of its "City of Presidents" art installation of presidential statues.
After Laddie Boy died in 1929, the nation's newsboys collected pennies that were melted and made into a statue of the first presidential canine celebrity.
Such a delightful video. Been watching THG since 2017, and still look forward to each one. I get a little smarter every time. Thank you, History Guy. 😁
Fala is definitely the most famous and beloved pet. But personally my favorite is Teddy Roosevelt's horse Bleistein. But, I'm just a Teddy Roosevelt fan all around. He was a Boy Scout, a war hero, and an avid hunter & fishermen after all :) Plus we can thank him for our national parks, which I take advantage of every chance I get.
Thank you for today’s lesson. Dogs (and cats and other animals as well) are very intuitive and are fully aware of when they are called upon to be more than just a house mate.
What ever his subject even if its nothing i would ever choose to learn is still interesting the way The history guy delivers the stuff , that deserves to be remembered.
I live in the Hudson Valley and have been to Springwood at least a half a dozen times Being a dog person and for the last 22 years being taken care of by 3 successive Westies . I believe I have some idea of the bond that Fala and FDR had. We took my first Westie on my only visit to DC and we took the walk up the mall when my pup saw the statue of Murray the Outlaw of Fala Hill he sat down and stared at him for 2-3 minutes (Which is an eternity for a Westie). He then looked up at me I gave him a silent nod and we walked on. On another note. for several years the organization that cares for the Home of Daisy Suckley held an event called the "Fala Gala" which held on a Summer day where they invited people to bring their Scottish Terriers for a fundraiser/ day of frolic for the dogs and their people. A field containing 50 or so happy excited energetic Terriers is a wonderful time.

@@leggonarm9835, We had a Cairn terrier we adopted when she was 7 after her elderly owner passed away. She was kind of shut down when we first got her and it took a while to get her to come out of her shell but she turned out to be a great dog, very friendly and welcoming to people and other dogs, and she loved traveling in the car and going on long trail walks. She spent her last 7 years living with a 120 pound Anatolian shepherd and the 2 of them had almost the same exact fur and coloration so it created quite a stir when we took them out in public together. It's important to note however that terriers are actually a working breed dog and they are used to killing rodents and if they're in an apartment with little or nothing to do they can be destructive. My dog was never like that other than digging holes in the yard to catch moles ( And digging a hole underneath a fence in order to chase a skunk off of our property) but I have seen videos on TH-cam of Cairn terriers destroying a house out of sheer boredom. (ps, lesson #1, Do not give puppies of long-lived breeds as presents to elderly owners, especially when they're showing beginning signs of dementia).
@@leggonarm9835 I’ve had five over the past forty years. I know everyone loves their own favorite breeds, but I really can’t imagine a dog with a better, more engaging personality. I’m older and not up to keeping a dog now, but I often think about and miss every one of my Westies. They are just awfully stubborn, though. You’ll never win an argument with a Westie, but at least you can pick them up and impose your will on them that way!
I moved to Hyde Park on my 14th birthday. Both of my sisters had homes that overlooked Val Kill where Eleanor had her modest home and where Fala spent his final years. My first job as a teen was as a caretaker on the Morgan estate right over the stone wall from the Roosevelt home and library where they are buried along with the countries very special dog Fala.
Thomas Jefferson kept several mockingbirds while President, his favorite was named Dick. Dick's cage door was often kept open so he could come and go as he pleased. He would sing Jefferson to sleep, sit on his shoulder while the president worked at his desk and swoop down to take food from between his lips. Dick would also liked to sing a "duet" with Jefferson's violin when it was brought out to play.
It's been a long time since press photographers used "Speed Graphic" cameras that used 4"X5" cut sheet film. Jackie Kennedy used one in her job as a photographer for Washington Times-Herald.
That is a good question. I couldn’t find any reference that tied the game token to a specific animal. But the token is clearly a Scottish Terrier, and was introduced in the 1950s when much of the public would have been familiar with Fala.
I have 2 scottish terriers. Max and poppy. They are great dogs. But they are holy terrors! My house and garden bear the scars of their insanely active play. Also. Not much sleep.❤
The Scottish terrier breed was definitely the dog worldwide of the 1930s. Highly popular in Britain the United States and Germany. Yes Eva Braun had a pair and there are color movies of them taken of them. Actor Boris Karloff had a Scottish terrier whom he called whiskey.

10:47 "A destroyer was sent thousands of miles to fetch Fala at a cost of twenty million dollars." In WW2, the cost of a Fletcher-class destroyer was six million dollars. On its face, the report of the cost of fetching Fala is nonsense . . . or other words of a bovine scatalogical bent.

President Coolidge had a pet racoon. Rebecca was a raccoon kept as a pet by US president Calvin Coolidge and First Lady Grace Coolidge.
A Dyslexic lady student in my IT course once joked: " Did you hear of the Dyslexic Agnostic? He spent his life wondering if there really was a DOG." 😅
That joke's as old as Fala. 😆

Good morning from Connecticut, fellow classmates!
My favorite story about Fala was FDR'S Fala speech, where he said that Fala was offended.
At least FDR was never seen picking up Fala by the ears!
Fala! Still shows up in crossword puzzles. 💜💜💜

Theodore Roosevelt.
