I was 16 in 1967 and listened to music all the time and back then the drummers just quietly kept a beat. Every band was the same and then I heard this song. The drumming was just mind blowing to me at the time, nobody played like that.

Same age as me. Really the The Who used Keith Moon as a lead instrument. Great great drummer. Nuts though That's why they called him Moon the loon. Outstanding song

I'm about 10 years too late for 1967. But the music of The Who and Zep opened my mind of 60-70s music, and Keith Moon and Bonham's drumming has awe struck me when I was a teenager starting on drums, and their playing still captivates me 30 years later. There's very few rock drummers from Keith's early years on drums who still hold the test of time after decades of great drummers thereafter. That defines Keith as a pioneer in his craft and enormous influence on rock music to this day, crazy as a loon but ingenoius as Einstein.

People who don’t enjoy Moon’s drumming are pathetic. I can almost can listen to an argument that Keith wasn’t the best technically- but he nearly if not totally beats technical drummers at that too, whilst often drunk and stoned

Keith came at a time, like Mitch Mitchell, when drummers were only required to keep a beat. Like Mitchell's jazz-based drumming for Jimi, Keith took drumming to a forefront for a band that was a lot more rock than either Beatles Kinks or Stones. He deserves every bit of credit & more than the Zeppelin freaks give to Bonham, who really didn't fit into a blues-based band. Enough for my lecture on Keith. Only wish he lived longer.

@@whisky2roxy Roger is underrated compared to Pete, Keith and John. a lot of people see him as just "the singer," and overlook that: (a) singing is a musical skill as much being an instrumentalist; and (b) Roger brought out just about everything Pete wanted to get across lyrically (particularly the aggression and sarcasm) that Pete wouldn't have been able to had he sung the songs himself.

I first heard this song probably early to mid-1969. Our new neighbors’ older brother moved to California and left his younger siblings all of his 45s. I got my hands on this one and was mesmerized by every amazing element, particularly Keith’s drumming. What got me were the snare drum rolls and the ‘sound’ of his snare...I was hooked. I wanted to be a Rock drummer and nothing else. 50-plus years on that’s basically still the deal. 😎

I met Keith at the 100 club London in 1964, a friend and I were watching The Pretty Things and he came up to ask for a light, said he was with a band called The High Numbers, and what did I think of the drummer Viv Prince. I think Keith was very influenced by Viv's style, and went on to adopt a lot of it. At the time, Viv was one of the best on the scene. Keith of course went on to become one of the best in the world. I'm so glad I was privileged to meet him back in those wonderful days.

@@NigelOrmsvik That's a wonderful story, Nigel, one that few people would be able to tell. I know a lot more about Keith now having read Tony Fletcher's incredible book, "Moon." But even he doesn't mention Viv Prince (that I remember) and how Keith probably adopted a lot of his style. That's a great Rock Srar drummer name! I'll bet there were a lot of 'flashy' players. on the scene back then! For me, as a drummer, that's really fascinating information. ☺

In 1991, my oldest son was a trombone player in the Jones County Jr.College Maroon Typhon Marching Band. Their field show that year included this song and "Vehicle" among other '60s hits. But "...Miles" was the finale and never failed to bring down the house. At the end, the dance line in their glittery gold outfits did a Rocketts style routine with arms linked and high kicks I can still see in my mind's eye today.

I just looked it up, it sold over *2 million copies* in the US, and topped the charts at #3 in the UK and #4 in the US. Tens of thousands of guys (and some gals) certainly wanted an SG with P90s and a Hiwatt amp, or the closest to it that they could afford, in its wake.

For me it's comfort food music. I try to have some New Stuff in my Spotify feed, but I've had Live at Leeds blasting away the past few days. (I'm 66 and if I ever get to where I start grumping about how "they don't make good music any more" it's in my living will to take me out back and shoot me.)

    These Songs are so Iconic
    from a coworker
So I am on a bus , going through NYC, I look down at this street corner & just standing there, Townsend, Entwistle, Moon, & Daltrey.
    The Who right there...

    Lyrics
    I know you've deceived me
    Now here's a surprise
    I know that you have
'cause there's magic in my eyes
I can see for miles and miles
And miles and miles and miles
    Oh yeah.
If you think that I don't know
About the little tricks you play
    And never see you when
Deliberately you put things in my way
    Well,here's a poke at you
You're gonna choke on it too
    You're gonna lose that smile
    Because all the while....
I could see for miles and miles(x2)
I can see for miles and miles and miles....oh yea
You took advantage of my trust in you
When I was so far away
I saw you holding lots of orher guys
And now you've got the nerve to say that you still want me
    Well,that's as may be
    But you gotta stand trial
    Because all the while....
    I could see for miles..etc..
    I know you've deceived me
    Now here's a surprise
    I know that you have
Cause there's magic in my eyes
I can see for miles and miles
And miles and miles and miles
    Oh yeah.
The Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal
Are mine to see on clear days
You thought that I would need
    A crystal ball
To see right through the haze
    Well,here's a poke at you
You're gonna choke on it too
You're gonna lose that smile because all the while...
I could see for miles and miles (2)
I can see for miles and miles
    And miles and miles........

According to the Setlist website, played only ONCE or two when Keitn Moon was alive. Their higgest chartin single in the US. "ATHENA" charted only to 28 but spent more weeks.

First heard on pirate Radio London 266 "Big L" when the BBC wouldn't play anything like this on the Light Program. Harold Wilson and Tony Benn couldn't close the Pirates down fast enough. Thanks a lot Labour Government.

The groups that came in the 70's and 80's played harder, faster and sang higher but most couldn't create a soundscape like this.

At about 0:30 seconds, among all the closeups of the band's faces, a face briefly appears that's definitely not from the band. That face also seems to be projected or displayed as part of the set behind the drum riser.
    Whose face is that?
