Arthur Schoonderwoerd was briefly my piano teacher in the late 1990s. Lovely guy! I even went to the concert that (I think) was used for this CD-box, as I remember him asking us not to applaud between movements to prevent it from ending up on the recording. Surely, the most unnecessary question ever in the history of mankind. Bless him.
The sound and stench of Grand Central bathrooms reproduced admirably is the most sarcastic and funniest descriptions I have heard in a while. Bravo, Dave!
I will NEVER tire of you discussing the Arthur Schoonderwoerd / Ensemble Cristofori Beethoven set. Your review of this cycle (titled: Review: Beethoven in Cristofori's Bathroom) caused serious stomach pain from laughing. So hilarious.
Happy Thanksgiving, Dave! Yes, the Norrington box is the NE PLUS ULTRA of bad…The only cure for which is the good and GREAT (going through my big Szell box again!).
What a splendid proposition 😂😂😂. We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here in in Australia. The only thanks I will be giving is to you Dave, for youe sterling videos and PASSION. Take care 👍
I really enjoyed this turkey talk. I thought you were going to hold up Gergiev's Mahler's cycle, which I once heard described as a "crime against humanity." Thankfully, I never bought any of the five finalists, although I did acquire Celibidache's Mozart Requiem as a separate item. It hits you across the face like a sledge-hammer. On this festival of gratefulness, I thank YOU for the years of daily enjoyment that you have given. It has been a little hard on my pocketbook when I find out that I have been missing out on one of the greatest recordings or recording projects EVER! But you have never steered me wrong.
Greetings Dave! I didn't know the Schoonderwoerd version of the Beethoven piano concerti. Listened to the beginning of the 4th concerto in G and you were absolutely right. The fantastic symphonic opening (after the piano solo) was already completely ruined. It sounded more like a little ensemble than a concerto, more concerto grosso.... On a side note, in my library they have the monthly musical magazine Luister (Listen in English). I went through it quickly and found an article with screenshot of you were they covered your youtube channel; your thematic videos like the Reference recordings and others. The article dealt with music collectors who sometimes focus too much on the sonics and technicalities and you were pitted against those kind of people because you made the musical works and all its different kind of interpretations the center of attention. Congratulations!! PS maybe I missed it because there are so much videos now, but did you already do a video on the Frank Martin piano concertos?
I learned something new - I've spoken nothing but English my whole life and never knew that "turkey" could mean a clunker. What a shame - I love turkey!
A turkey is a bird that don't fly so it makes sense as something that does not work or is not good at it's purpose. Also similar, "that dog don't hunt".
Curious about your last box I listened to the first movement of the fifth piano concerto, I found it hard to concentrate as it was being drowned out by the sound of Beethoven spinning in his grave.
A wonderful video, Dave. Such a pity that the infamous Portsmouth Sinfonia are not around these days to back Schoonderwoerd. That would have taken it to another level altogether. Just listen to the way they start Also Sprach Zarathustra if you don't know what I am talking about.
Just got the Schoonderwoerd Beethoven box a couple days ago as a joke on myself. It was ridiculously cheap for the box set ($6?), so I figured why not. Haven't given it a listen yet.
Dear Dave!! You are incredibly entertaining while "horrifying your Guests"...just grand....I shall indeed take your advice...Thank you so much...Greetings from Europe!!!
I was close to him, front row, at a concert in London many years ago, (live performance) I actually heard him shout "you bastards" at the London Symphony orchestra during a performance of the Missa Solemnis. They were not playing as he wanted... he swore never to conduct them again, and did not do so.
If you need a palate cleanser after subjecting yourself to any of the boxes in this video, the Szell Columbia box is available for $140 on a Black Friday deal via the online behemoth, while supplies last.
It might be foolish to try to declare any box set as the greatest box set of classical music ever, but if I were forced to choose one, it would be the big Szell Columbia box. If it is available at the above mentioned price, I would suggest to anyone who does not yet have it: BUY IT! In fact, buy several as Christmas gifts for your friends and family!
Having listened to the finale of the Beethoven 5th piano concerto just now, i was fair scunnered by the grotesque sound of the piano which sounds as if it were a badly tuned honky-tonk pub upright. The orchestra is oddly balanced with the brass drowning out the strings in what sounds like a toilet. No finesse or lyricism. Thanks for showing me what not to buy for those i wish to keep as friends this Christmas 🎄
Wait...Maazel did ANOTHER Mahler cycle? I can take some of the Vienna cycle...because it's the Vienna Phil. That M2 is pretty good, if a bit on the slow side, but then....it was my first recording of the piece. It sounds great, but yeah....I've heard many since that are better. But....they actually allowed Maazel to do another one?
I don't own any of these boxes (thankfully). If I wanted to horrify my guests at Thanksgiving, and encourage them to leave, I would probably break out my Messiaen box from Warner, and play some of his organ music. It may not be worthless dreck, but its appeal is limited.
You hold back so much Dave that sometimes its hard to know what you think.. I do enjoy your broadcasts.
I laughed soo hard 😂 great video
“The sound and the stench admirably reproduced.” 🤣🤣🤣
Ha ha ha ! Excellent ! 🤣
LOVE IT!!!!
Another fun video & it was a wonderful Thanksgiving treat 😊

Celibidache's approach to vocal-symphonic works is to show how music would sound under an electronic microscope.
The sound and stench of Grand Central bathrooms reproduced admirably is the most sarcastic and funniest descriptions I have heard in a while. Bravo, Dave!
I’m surprised that the Gergiev bruckner box didn’t make the turkey list, but I can’t argue with these bona fide turkeys!
Off the fence Dave!!!!
Brilliant - loved this ( as I do them all)
Well your descriptions gave me a wonderful laugh on Thanksgiving.
One of your funniest for sure 😂👏
Enjoyed the Gobble Gobble Chat Dave.😊
I will NEVER tire of you discussing the Arthur Schoonderwoerd / Ensemble Cristofori Beethoven set.

'Cosmic arrogance' - love it - explains the whole situation.
Happy Thanksgiving, Dave!
Yes, the Norrington box is the NE PLUS ULTRA of bad…The only cure for which is the good and GREAT (going through my big Szell box again!).
Oh David, when you got to Norrington I was pleading with you to stop, I thought I was going to die with laughter.
What a splendid proposition 😂😂😂. We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here in in Australia. The only thanks I will be giving is to you Dave, for youe sterling videos and PASSION. Take care 👍
Happy thanksgiving 🎉

Not yet, but I reviewed them on classicstoday.com, I think.
Just reading the title, I knew Roger Norrington was going to make an appearance. Perfect way to get rid of the in-laws.
😂
I learned something new - I've spoken nothing but English my whole life and never knew that "turkey" could mean a clunker. What a shame - I love turkey!
So do I!
@ Fantastic. Go eat lots of it, and happy Thanksgiving!
A turkey is a bird that don't fly so it makes sense as something that does not work or is not good at it's purpose. Also similar, "that dog don't hunt".
I think it's an Americanism. I don't think I've ever heard it used in England to describe something bad.
@ I'm an American lol
Curious about your last box I listened to the first movement of the fifth piano concerto, I found it hard to concentrate as it was being drowned out by the sound of Beethoven spinning in his grave.
Nice gift ideas for a couple of people i know 😂

Happy Thanksgiving, Dave! Enjoyable video!
His historically informed xylophone ! 😂
That was great fun! Just as you were reaching for it, I guessed that you were going to pull out that Beethoven Concerto cycle. Happy Thanksgiving!
I just listened to the beginning of Beethoven’s third piano Concerto with that guy - what a weird experience!
If bad Bruckner gets Frau Blucher, Roger Norrington should get the campfire scene from Blazing Saddles.
LOL!
If you could transform vinegar into sound, you'd get the Schoonderwoerd Beethoven concerto cycle.
Dear Dave!! You are incredibly entertaining while "horrifying your Guests"...just grand....I shall indeed take your advice...Thank you so much...Greetings from Europe!!!
Celibedache s tempos were so slow that you fell asleep listening to his performances
A real 🦃 for sure. 104 minutes for the Verdi Requiem is inexcusable.
Thanks Dave for how you continue to expound us with so much insight have a great thanksgiving weekend.
The Maazel Philharmonia Mahler 8 is rather excellent, but not good enough to redeem the rest of the box, I suppose. And it's available separately.
Truly laugh out loud! OMG 😂 Historically informed xylophone!
Arthur Schoonderwoerd also has an equally cursed Mozart piano sonatas collection that oh my God...
Maazel was a really nasty guy apparently. His musicians tried to be sure not to get into the elevator with him.
Flatulence as well? Oy!!
I was close to him, front row, at a concert in London many years ago, (live performance) I actually heard him shout "you bastards" at the London Symphony orchestra during a performance of the Missa Solemnis. They were not playing as he wanted... he swore never to conduct them again, and did not do so.
This was very true: I know several London professional musicians who dreaded being conducted by him.
What about Makela’s (Ken) Sibelius cycle?
Been there, done that.
When Maazel was in Pittsburgh, his Mahler was cringeworthy.
I’ll have to listen to the Beethoven piano concertos for a few minutes as a party record of putrid perversity.
I had a good laugh over this, Dave. Happy Thanksgiving, though.

The Svetlanov cover is comical, with the line-up of various conductor poses. 🤣
As comical as the performances are tragic. Unbelievably bad from an often excellent conductor.
Another possible use for the Celibidache might be as substitute tryptophan for those who don't like turkey but do enjoy napping on Thanksgiving.

Maazel Tov?
@@marcsmith5275Hahaha!
@@marcsmith5275Maazel, Lo Tov!
I've never heard anything by Celibidache that wasn't second rate - maybe even third rate.
I don't own any of these boxes (thankfully). If I wanted to horrify my guests at Thanksgiving, and encourage them to leave, I would probably break out my Messiaen box from Warner, and play some of his organ music. It may not be worthless dreck, but its appeal is limited.
I nominate the Contzen/Gobble recording of Mozart's "6" violin concertos for a dishonorable mention.
I was thinking about that one, but it wasn't really a box. Still, I may find a way...
