  • At the 2013 24 Hours of Daytona. Mazda debuted a new racing car.
After the launch of Skyactiv technology, Mazda created a production-based diesel race engine to replace the aging rotary used in their outgoing Grand-Am racer. This engine was then used in a racing version of the new Mazda6 as well as an LMP2 car that the Japanese marque intended to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, unlike manufacturers like Audi and Peugeot, Mazda's diesel endurance racing efforts would be far from smooth sailing. Almost 10 years since the diesel Mazda6 rolled out onto the high banks of Daytona, we look back at the history of diesel Mazdas in sportscar racing.

I had no idea that the Mazda 6/Atenza was a real racecar, and not just a fictional Gr.3 in Gran Turismo. Great video!

I appreciate you covering these cars. There's not a lot of information about them since they were short-lived and not very popular. I was stoke to see the Mazda 6 come to the US with that engine but sadly it never happed.

I'm glad you liked it! You're certainly right about the scarcity of information about these cars. I had to do a lot of digging to find all of this stuff. I'm also pretty happy about the fact that people can find all the information here now. Thanks for tuning in!

Let's be real - Mazda are the big absentee in sportscars currently. Always tried to innovate.

I would like to see them back too. I missed the RT24-P after it was retired.

@@triplecrownracing Why was it retired though? It was a pretty competitive car...

@@MCJohn-117 they didn’t want to build an LMDh. LMDh rules were supposed to land in 2022 but were pushed back a year because of the pandemic. My guess is that Mazda already pulled the trigger in 2020 and didn’t bother funding another season. Somewhat similar to Honda’s deal in F1, they withdrew hastily during the pandemic only for circumstances to change after their decision.

Diesel is the only thing to go racing with. The age of gasoline has come and gone, electric cars have flopped epically on the market (and there isn't much to do racing in an electric car, all one does is turn the wheel left-right).
