    I recommend not buying a house in what is called in Portugal a "Condomínio Privado" - a walled in area where a group of houses share a common swimming pool, gym, garden, kid's playing area, tennis court, etc. From both personal experience and also the experience of several friends of mine, people tend to be very happy in a Condomínio Privado for the first three or four years, then the disagreements about how to manage the common areas (/the costs of keeping them) start to pile up, and the owners of the houses end up not talking to each other, or splitting into interest groups that barely talk to each other. I've seen this happen time and again.
    One could argue that if you buy an apartment there are also common areas to manage collectively. That is true, but:
    a) the common areas in a building are a much smaller issue, compared with the common areas in a Condomínio Privado
    b) in a Condomínio Privado the owners of the houses cross each other's path a lot more often (in the swimming pool, the kid's playing area, etc) than in a building
    Trust me, a Condomínio Privado means four years of happiness and a steadily degrading quality of life from then on.
    I also tend to dislike buildings with a swimming pool, for more or less the same reasons. Swimming pools are a source of constant problems, and after the novelty effect wears off, they tend to be used only by kids up to 15 y/o (and tons of their school friends, which is another source of constant attrition between the owners of the houses/apartments)

      Thats a common thing all over the world. The best part of condominios is the safety and privacy, but beware of the monthly fees, people don't take that into consideration when they get to an old age.

    Lisboa, Cascais and Oeiras are the most expensive municipalities in Portugal by far. Cascais and Oeiras are the best compromise between being close to central Lisbon but also getting the more relaxed beachy feel lifestyle. Quality of life wise they are great, but it comes at a price.

    • @antoniof9756
      @antoniof9756 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More expensive than those only Quinta do Lago, in the Algarve.

    • @diogorodrigues747
      @diogorodrigues747 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of places south of Lisbon are also great and cheaper. Unfortunatelly, most of them are not as well-cared as in Oeiras or Cascais. For example, I live in a neighboorhood named Marisol, in the municipality of Almada, which is a very quiet neighboorhood close to the beach, close to important places (shops, restaurants, etc.) and with tons of pines forests around. The problem is that, comparing to what happens in Cascais or Oeiras, these municipalities in the south are much more burocratic and are not that productive - some streets have a terrible floor, some places doesn't have walkways at the edge of the roads and the existent walkways are sometimes irregular or with lots of plants (they look like a jungle).

      @@antoniof9756 Quinta do Lago is part of Concelho de Loulé. Loulé it's the 4th more expensive municipality in Portugal right after Lisboa, Cascais and Oeiras (in that order). I'm talking about real estate avg cost per square meter.

    Another excellent and informative video from you! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us!😁
    We're currently still in the US trying to whittle down our belongings to a manageable amount. (Not easy to do at our age!) 😉
    We are looking to buy closer to the Porto area, north of the Porto area) because we enjoy all 4 seasons, especially fall & winter. (We currently live near Boulder, Colorado at 9K elevation, so snow is something we enjoy!)☃️☃️
    We hope to visit in October for 2 weeks in order to better educate ourselves on what areas may be better suited for us.
    Have a wonderful weekend and thank you again for your assistance for those of us just beginning the long process of planning our move!

      @@HoneymoonAlways We have the annual property taxes as well. I know in some provinces there are incentives to avoid the HST or GST, but not for all properties... the fact is, taxes are very up front here. Things are not hidden. And, did you know that the US is one of the only countries in the world that will tax you and make you file taxes in the US, no matter where you live in the world. Residency or no residency.

    There is far more to Portugal than living in an expensive, noisy, overcrowded, polluted city like Lisbon where everyone is in a mad rush and has no time for anyone else. It seems so many Americans just want to replicate their former life in the US. If so, then why leave the US? This video totally fails to show the wide range of living options available in Portugal.

    • @HoneymoonAlways
      @HoneymoonAlways  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Of course there is more than just Lisbon, but we are new here so we can’t be experts on the entire country yet. 😅Realize that when you move to a new country everything is new, so you have to take it one step at a time. While you may think Lisbon is similar to the US, everything is so different to us. what you considered a mad rush, we consider taking it slow. So today we are getting to know Lisbon and enjoying what a big city has to offer, tomorrow is another day to get to know more of this beautiful country.

      @@arturjcrebelo3275 lisbon is far from being a small city in european terms. In fact Lisbon metropolitan area is the 8th largest in the EU with around 3 million people. Most foreigners tend to consider Lisbon as being only the proper city limits (which has only 500k as you said). But that is similar to considering NYC as being manhattan or something like that. I live in Oeiras and if someone from some other city asks me where i live I say Lisbon.

    that first appartment reeks of classism. if you can't share a bathroom with your maid, you must have a severe superiority complex. horrible. also i've been to a few rich people houses and there was no such thing as a maid bathroom or maid entrance. there's smaller toilets for visits, though. at least where i live it isn't normal, thankfully.

      This is something very familiar to me when growing up in Sri-Lanka. We were not rich, just middle class, but we had a nice big house, and we had a living-in maid. She had her own bathroom. Our bathroom was only for our family. The maid was treated very well. This is very normal there too in rich & middle class families.
      Sri-Lanka was under Portuguese ruling at one point; there are similar last names I recognize; Fonseka is one of them too.
