    Now in the 21st century one of the cruelest forms of punishment is listening to the monotone voice of a narrator that reads from a script.

      The trouble with any form of punishment is that it assumes that everyone subjected to it is guilty. Sadly no system of justice can 100% ensure that an innocent person is never declared guilty. Even with modern forensics, we still condemn innocent people. Terrible to think how many throughout history have been tortured or executed due to an incorrect verdict on their guilt.

    The photo used at 2:42 and 3:17 was not the execution of Blackjack Ketchum. It's a photo taken in a Washington DC military installation near the Capitol Building just before the execution by hanging of the other conspirators who plotted with John Wilkes Booth to assassinate Abraham Lincoln in 1865. They were hung in a traditional way, seated in chairs, hooded, and then a single platform holding them up was released so they'd all drop simultaneously. I read though that at least one of the conspirators took over five minutes to die after the drop. You can see the line of Union Army soldiers along the top of the wall.
    FYI: I've read that physiologists say the guillotine is the most humane method of execution. Quick and painless, they say.

    • @jimdavenport8020
      @jimdavenport8020 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Julian Gallows had a trap door that the weight of the condemned man triggered a water system that would eventually trip the trap. It was used only in Wyoming and eventually outlawed as it was forcing the subject to, essentially, commit suicide. Also, it could be slow. One hanging reportedly took 30 minutes after the subject started the water flow before the trap sprung. Can't imagine waiting like that.

I cancelled Netflix and just threw that extra bread at TH-cam. Made life so much easier. “18 hundreds and 19 hundreds”? So 1800-1810 and 1900-1910? I don’t think you understand what it means.

    • @MrBulky992
      @MrBulky992 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      18 hundreds and 19 hundreds, normally written as "1800s and 1900s", means the entirety of the 19th and the 20th centuries respectively. I have never heard those terms used to mean anything else. 1800-1810 is the first decade of the 1800s.

    • @stephencresswell4760
      @stephencresswell4760 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the 19 hundreds includes 19 hundred and 1, 19 hundred and 2 etc. Ask someone or look it up if you don’t believe me

    • @MrBulky992
      @MrBulky992 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@stephencresswell4760I have done my searches which show that "the 1800s" is most widely used to describe the period 1801-1899 which can be divided into the early 1800s, the mid-1800s and the late 1800s. Queen Victoria (1819-1901) reigned in the mid to late-1800s. The"eighteen hundreds" are all years which begin "eighteen hundred ..." e.g. "eighteen hundred and forty eight".
      It *can* also be used to mean 1800-1810 but only if the context makes it very clear that a decade is being referred to and not a century e.g.
      1790s
      *1800s*
      1810s
      1820s
      etc.
      I doubt that anyone using the term "the late 1800s" without such context is referring to the years in and around 1807-10. They are almost certainly meaning the period 1870-1899.
      In our current century, you may well hear people saying "the 2000s" to mean 2000-2010 (which we also playfully call the "noughties") because we have the context of not being far into it: that usage may well change as the years advance over the next fifty years so it becomes consistent with the usage for earlier centuries.
