Why does the Welsh language use 5 different words for the same thing?

  • Most people think of the Welsh language as coming in two types. North Wales Welsh and South Wales Welsh. We expect to see some different words spoken, depending which of these areas you live in. For example Milk is Llaeth in South Wales and Llefrith in North Wales. But did you know that there can be several different words for the same thing in Welsh? For example, there are five different words for Fox in Welsh. In this video we learn why this has happened and look at some examples. Then I’ll demonstrate how to pronounce a few of the Welsh words for each of the five areas.

Some people are finding the sound and picture are out of sync in this video. It’s fine in the TH-cam app but when I watched from the website on my phone it was out of sync. I’ve also watched it from the website on my ipad and again the picture and sound were synced fine. I’m not sure why its happening but my apologies for this and I will try my best to make sure this doesnt happen in future videos.

My grandfather was from a small village called ynysybwl near Pontypridd & was known as "grancher", but in Pontypridd, a grandfather is called "bampi". Pontypridd is only about 3 miles from ynysybwl.

My family in Llantwit Fardre and Brynna all say grancher too, never Bampi but they say Bampi in Beddau I think alongside Ponty.

Came to your channel to refresh some of my welsh from my childhood after living in Wales for 9 years (I later moved to England and now I live in Spain) and was so shocked when you said you lived in Gorseinon because that's a small village where I also used to live! What a small world! I am only half Welsh but I still would like to be more in touch this part of my heritage and play a part in helping to keep this beautiful ancient language and culture alive :)

The upside down V or circumflex is known as “to bach” (little roof) in North Wales.

The audio always seems to be a bit out of sync with the video on your posts. This makes it a bit difficult for those of us who need to "see" the words as you say them (lip-reading, even if I can hear).

My apologies. I’ve checked the video out. It looks fine on the youtube app and on the youtube website on my ipad. When I look at it on the website on my phone it is out of sync. I’m not sure why this is happening but I will try and find out why so I can stop it happening in future videos. Sorry once again.

I can see that as bad because words and dialects will be lost. Blended in to the majority.

Sorry to hear that. I’ve only had the microphone for a year so I don’t really want to get a new one yet. Mics can get quite expensive. I will see if it’s possible to up the sound in the settings though.

This does not encourage This Sais in his quest to learn Cymraeg! Learning the basic language is difficult enough

Please don’t let this video put you off learning Welsh. If you learn the standard Welsh words and grammar everyone will understand you. These are just extra dialect words used in certain areas of Wales which I hoped people would find interesting to hear about.
