The store you stated could have been an old restaurant was once Todd Groceey. The store was a hustling bustling business till Earl Todd died. His wife Sue Todd has now also died. The store sold freshly cut sandwich meats and bacon. It reminded me of an old merchantile store. They sold chicken feed, can goods, sodas, beer had pinball machines and even sold minnows. All of the old houses you mentioned and the McAllister store were owned by John McAllister. He was a greedy white man who lived in the town and once told someone that he wish he owned the world and everyone would have to ask him for everything. The furniture store has been one building for many many years. The building you thought was an old bank was actually a bank for the town. My thoughts was that a ghost town was uninhibited. Mt. Carmel is more than just that one strip of road you traveled and I have many family members and some friends who like you said still live there. It’s quiet, basically crime free and I too would love to see more there but as I said John Mccalloster bout up and not all legally those homes from old people in those days as they err on their death beds for some thinking it was to rent them etc. His children who consist of two sons and a daughter whom I haven’t seen or heard from in years inherited all of the things he acquired. They won’t sell anything to any body. I have some great ideas for the town but again they ain’t selling a snicker nuts. Sad though cause at some point it will all be but a dream.
The old post office was in Earl Todd's General Store. My grandfather was the mail man.
