I'm liking this series on scrapers. Old screwdrivers can be made in to small special purpose scrapers too.

When I started turning, as a kid, in the late 50's , all we had were scrapers. My great grandfather was my teacher. To start with , 1) learn to clean the shop! 2) sharpening tools. 3) how to make the scraper you needed and how to use it without damaging the spindle work you were using it on. AND above all!! keeping the pattern in the log book so you could duplicate the scraper later on incase of re-orders. Often, we had to keep the wood template for the piece too, and the scraper number was attached to it.
I remember as a n early teen my great grandfather showing me some of the project patterns (story sticks). One consisted of four eight foot sticks long and had more than ten scraper patterns associated with it.. The project was a split turning for the front trip of a grand Pipe organ for the masonic temple somewhere. The reason I brought this up is because of a flood or something, he had to return a bottom legs of the trim which was to foot in diameter fifteen years later and again had to return a section of it due to the installation of fire sprinklers. custom work requires the mandate of Keeping records of your scraper designs and story sticks.
